  • Patent number: 6547179
Abstract: In a flying splice roll changer a splice tail occurs at the splice joint that may induce problems in a downstream processing station. The present invention is directed to shortening of the splice tail (2) by directing the paper web (1) around a deflection roller (3) so that the splice tail (2) is located on the outer face of the roller and extends radially under the action of centrifugal force while being optionally supported by air ejected from blowing nozzles (8, 9). The splice tail is then cut with a blade (7) located in the vicinity of the outer surface of the deflection roller (3) so that only an insignificant length of a few millimeters remains.

  • Patent number: 6471776
Abstract: An apparatus applies a coating composition consisting of a resin and fine abrasive particles like corundum particles, to a paper web by feeding the composition to the paper web as it loops around a guide roller to a metering roller juxtaposed with the guide roller. The coating composition, which may develop stripes, is then equalized with a structured roller engaging the paper-web pass leaving the guide roller and formed with at least one thread-like structuring element which may be followed by or preceded by a doctor blade arrangement or a smooth-surfaced roller.

  • Patent number: 6432201
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for applying a coating substance to a continuous paper web in a process for producing abrasion-resistant laminates for manufacturing decorative paper. The coating substance consists of a viscous mixture of melamine resin and alphacellulose to which particles of corundum are added, and is applied to the visible surface of the paper. The inventive device includes a deflector roll (2) on which the paper web (1) lies in an area in which it loops around; a metering roll (6) which is arranged parallel to the deflector roll (2) and forms the boundary of a gap with the same, and which is driven synchronously or almost synchronously with the deflector roll; a slit nozzle (7) for applying the coating substance either directly to the paper web (1) on the deflector roll (2) or to the metering roll (6); and a doctor blade of a rectangular piece (9) of flexible rubber type material.

A lopping device is provided downstream of a conveyor segment lifting the web over the winder or sheet cutter, whichever is proximal to the cooler, the paper web then reaching a bifurcation from then which it may be directed to engagement with the mandrel in a winding readiness position of the coiler or to a conveyor segment for the transverse cutter.

  • Publication number: 20010038888
Abstract: A system for treating a porous web with a liquid treatment liquid continuously moves the web along a path sequentially through a saturating station, steaming station, and drying station. A drum in the saturating station engages a back face of the web and a trough closely surrounds the drum and confronts a front face of the web. Seals form between the drum and trough a generally closed and pressurizable chamber through which the web passes and which is supplied with the treatment liquid at superatmospheric pressure so as to force the liquid against only the front face of the web. In the steaming station jets of steam are directed against the back face of the web to heat the web and disperse the treatment liquid throughout the web. The web is heated and dried in the drying station.

  • Patent number: 6231670
Abstract: A paper web impregnated with a liquid resin and following impregnation is coated with an abrasive particle containing coating mass or composition and then dried before a liquid resin is applied which does not contain the abrasive particles. The web is then finally dried and the resulting paper is particularly suitable as a cover sheet in the hot pressing of laminates since it minimizes wear of the laminate press.

  • Patent number: 5829166
Abstract: An air-cushion nozzle for an air-treatment device has a hollow housing having an upper wall formed by a pair of end plates and a central plate. The end plates form with the central plate a pair of generally parallel slots directed upwardly generally toward each other and one of the end plates is formed adjacent and along a full length of the respective slot with an array of throughgoing holes. The central plate is substantially imperforate between the slots. The housing is internally pressurized, normally with hot air, to form from each slot an upwardly directed elongated jet of air and from each of the holes a respective upwardly directed further jet of air.

  • Patent number: 5690741
Abstract: In known pressure impregnating devices there is a chamber, which continuously narrows in the transport direction, between a cylinder around which the web to be impregnated loops, and the inner wall of a trough containing the impregnating agent. The impregnating agent is supplied to the chamber under high pressure, which is further increased in the chamber by dynamic effects. Sealing problems arise at the inlet and outlet slits as well as at the front faces because of the high pressure. Disruptions in the operation can be created by fluff coming loose from the paper web as well as by impregnating agent penetrating between the sliding faces. The new device is intended to remedy these disadvantages, and is provided with the seals have alternating narrow gaps and wide grooves in the form of a labyrinth seal. The grooves are have drain openings for the impregnating agent flowing through.

  • Patent number: 5431755
Abstract: During thermal treatment of continuously moving metal bands more heat is supplied over a part of a treatment path to edge regions of the band per surface unit than to the center region of the band. This prevents formation of a wavy shape in the edge regions of the metal band which is advantageous for a further treatment.

  • Patent number: 4429602
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of crosscutting a web and stacking the resultant sheets which comprises continuously feeding said web toward a cutter, decelerating the feed of said web at the cutting point for the duration of the cutting operation, while continuing the feed toward said cutter at the same rate whereby a back-up occurs in the feed direction, cutting said web, causing the new head end of the web so formed upon said cutting to overlap the tail end of the resultant cut sheet on the conveying path, conveying said sheet to a sheet stack, after said cut sheet is moved onward to said sheet stack at normal conveying speed increasing the conveying speed of the web toward said cutter until the web portion which has backed up ahead of the cutting point has been stretched taut and caused to overlap the tail end of the cut sheet.

  • Patent number: 4263724
Abstract: A freshly printed continuously traveling paper web leaves a heated print drying zone hot with its printing dry enough to avoid smudging but retaining a residual amount of the printing ink's solvent oil which continues to vaporize, forming a boundary layer of vaporizing oil traveling with the web. For cooling, the web wraps partially around one or more cooling rolls where condensation can cause the vapor boundary layer to condense on the exposed cold roll surface to a liquid phase, exerting a solvent action more or less resoftening the otherwise adequately dried printing with consequent smudging on the roll surface. To prevent this, the boundary layer is pneumatically removed from either this exposed surface of the roll not contacted by the web, or from the web itself, preventing resoftening of the printing by what would otherwise be liquid solvent oil.
