Patent number: 5297612Abstract: An improved method for controlling the clamping forces exerted on opposing sidewalls of a casting mold during a continuous casting operation, which comprises the steps of presetting the mold for the maximum load to be experienced by the sidewalls of the mold, securing the mold at the presetting, and, through displacement measuring devices and hydraulic spring mechanisms, controlling the forces exerted upon the sidewalls during the continuous casting operation as a function of the thermodynamic stresses to which the mold is subjected.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1992Date of Patent: March 29, 1994Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Thomas J. Korpela, Lester A. Foster, Jr.

Patent number: 4909306Abstract: At least two magnetic induction elements operated with alternating current are disposed successively in the longitudinal direction at the guide for a strand of a continuous casting plant, and in particular for a continuous steel casting plant, to provide a stirring mechanism. Each induction element is connected to its own phase (R, S, T, N) of the at least two phase alternating current and the phases (R, S, T, N) are shifted with respect to each other by a phase angle of from about 0 to 180 degrees. In order to avoid the formation of a continously uniformly directed circulating current of metal despite a simple and sturdy stirring provision and without the presence of additional switching circuits, the phases (R,S,T) generate in each case electromagnetic forces under formation of a magnetic alternating field at at least two neighboring induction elements, where the momentary value differences and the directional differences correspond to a phase shift of .PHI.+180 degrees.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1984Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Wolfgang Polanschutz, Luzian Pochmarski, Alfred Moser

Patent number: 4763719Abstract: An apparatus is provided for discontinuous withdrawing of a cast strand from a continuous casting mold. A drive roller frame is rotatably supported by a pedestal fixed as to spacial position. At least two drive rollers are rotatably supported by the drive roller frame and are disposed to press against the strand from opposite sides. A drive is connected to the drive rollers for driving the drive rollers. A reciprocating drive is connected to the drive roller frame for providing an oscillating pendulum motion to the drive roller frame around an axis supported by the pedestal.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1984Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Heinz Muller, Thomas J. Patent number: 4687141Abstract: The jet exiting from jet nozzles is guided along a guide surface for a jet nozzle with one or more nozzle channels disposed next to each other and in parallel, where the hydraulic diameter of the nozzle channels is from about 1.5 to 4 millimeters. In order to limit sharply and without spray the jet exiting out of the jet nozzle crosswise to its axis on the sides and in order to maintain it of uniform width over a large part of its length, the guide surface is of concave shape, the nozzle channels merge without step into the cylindrical jacket surface, the axes of the nozzle channels and the guide surface include an angle of from 0.5 and 2.5 degrees, and the guide surface is provided with a tear-off provision with a cutting edge.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1984Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Othmar Kriegner, Franz Lang, Gunter Holleis, Karl Schwaha, Fritz Granitz

Patent number: 4603841Abstract: A support machine is provided for a ladle in a continuous casting. A rotatable column is positioned on a bearing on a foundation base. A ladle support arm is pivoted around a horizontal axis, includes a yoke surrounding the rotatable column and has a U-shaped planar projection, and two lever legs running about in parallel and each extending an end of the yoke. A ladle support is disposed near an end of each lever leg. A support provision for each lever leg is disposed between the ladle support and the yoke for supporting the lever leg on the side of the column disposed toward the corresponding ladle. A position adjustment provision is attached to the column, is disposed at the side of the column opposite to the corresponding support provisions and engages the yoke. A ladle support is disposed near the free end of the support arm and can be pivoted around a horizontal axis provided by a hinge mechanism. An inclination measurement sensor is disposed at the ladle support of the ladle support arm.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1984Date of Patent: August 5, 1986Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Werner Scheurecker, Alois Scheinecker

Patent number: 4589468Abstract: A continuous mold for a continuous casting plant comprises inner walls made from copper and/or an alloy of copper and a wear resistant and abrasion resistant layer disposed on the copper and/or copper alloy on the inner exposed side of the mold. The layer covers at most two fifths of the total surface of a side wall and reaches from the output end of the mold up to about one third of the length of the mold at the center of the respect side of the mold. The wear resistant layer reaches in the area of the inner edges of the mold from the output end of the continuous mold to at least about the same level as the layer at the center of the respective side wall and up to the input end of the mold. The wear resistant layer can be provided as an open net like a grid or as a grate on the inner wall of the continuous mold with the surface areas in the open parts in between being formed by copper and/or a copper alloy.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1983Date of Patent: May 20, 1986Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Erich Misera, Hubert Floh, Reinhard Haargassner

Patent number: 4588020Abstract: A system is provided for limiting the parameters of the motion of a billet in a bow-type continuous casting plant. The stiffness of the billet is determined from values of the motion of the elements of the billet and/or from properties of the advancing billet as picked up by sensing elements. The determined values are compared with preset limiting values for parameters such as the maximum residual withdrawal time, the maximum still permissible stoppage time period and/or the permissible minimum withdrawal speed. If the limiting values are exceeded a signal is provided by a computing provision and fed to an alarm or is used to trigger a shut-off of the continuous casting process.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1984Date of Patent: May 13, 1986Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventors: Josef Waltl, Fritz Granitz, Karl Schwaha

Patent number: 4527609Abstract: A plant for continuously casting a metal, in particular steel, is provided comprising an open-ended mold. In order to provide an arrangement by which the hazards to the operators due to the emissions emerging from the mold are prevented, with an unobstructed view into the mold cavity being ensured, an emission collecting device covering the mold cavity and connected to an exhaust duct is provided above the mold at a distance therefrom to suck off the emissions emerging from the mold.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1983Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: Voest-Alpine International CorporationInventor: Thomas J.
