  • Patent number: 4878629
Abstract: A reserve winding of yarn on a tube on which a cross-wound package is built. The reserve includes an end projecting from the windings and extending to provide an initial length along the surface of the tube and around which windings are formed without substantial overlapping with the windings progressing from the inward extent of the initial length of yarn toward the tube end. The reserve winding is formed by a method utilizing an apparatus that is part of a traveling service unit and includes a suction conduit centrally located in a tube clamping plate for drawing-in the end of yarn and yarn guiding and advancing elements that guide the yarn inwardly along the surface of the tube and then advance the yarn outwardly during rotation of the tube to form the non-overlapping windings. The drawn-in end of the yarn is then cut at a maximum of approximately one centimeter from the windings or is inserted into the interior of the tube.

  • Patent number: 4845946
Abstract: A mottled appearing yarn having a main strand of fibers and wrapper fibers of different color than the main strand. The yarn is produced by feeding longer and coaser fibers with shorter and finer fibers in an open end rotor spinning machine and controlling the operation to accentuate wrapper fiber formation with the longer and coarser fibers. The wrapper fiber formation is accentuated by using a relatively low rotor diameter to fiber length ratio and by using an aggressive navel action.

  • Patent number: 4843808
Abstract: Bobbins spun in a ring spinning machine are conveyed sequentially to a measuring, counting and sorting device located between the ring spinning machine and an automatic winder that winds yarn from the bobbins. The measuring, counting and sorting device senses the presence of a bobbin, counts the bobbins being sensed, senses yarn and bobbin characteristics and compares the characteristics with predetermined standards. The device separates bobbins whose characteristics differ from the standard. Data regarding the operation of the spinning machine and operation of the winding machine are combined with the data obtained by the measuring, counting and sorting device and statistically evaluated for display or for controlling the production of the spinning machine and winding machine or for controlling conveyance of the packages from the winding machine.

  • Patent number: 4828191
Abstract: A method for sorting cheeses on an automatic winding machine includes predetermining a set-point value ratio of yarn length to cheese diameter. An actual value ratio of yarn length to cheese diameter is automatically measured. The measured values are automatically compared with the set-point values. • Patent number: 4825632
Abstract: A open-end spinning assembly includes a silver insertion device, a fiber separating device, a fiber guide device, a fiber collector for collecting, aligning and imparting a rotational movement onto fibers and subsequently applying the fibers to an open yarn end, and a draw-off device drawing-off yarn from the yarn collector. A fed-back yarn end is applied to a piecing fiber quantity fed into fiber collector for forming a piecer. The yarn is continuously drawn-off from the fiber collector and fibers and continuously fed into the fiber collector. A method for monitoring the piecers includes automatically measuring diameter values relative to the longitudinal axis of the yarn for the piecer and for yarn lengths upstream and downstream of the piecer having at least substantially the length of the piecer. • Patent number: 4824037
Abstract: Apparatus for freeing the bottom wraps and the downwinds of yarn from a textile bobbin to provide a free yarn end in preparation for subsequent unwinding of the bobbin, including three bobbin engaging and rotating rollers arranged in a triangle with two of the rollers being driven and the third roller being movable into engagement with the top of the bobbin to rotationally support the bobbin by the three rollers. The axes of rotation of two of the three rollers are skewed with the skewing being related to the direction of rotation to cause an upward component of rotational support of the bobbin to raise it against a stop member and away from a bottom support plate that is then pivoted downwardly to form an opening to accommodate jets of compressed air acting somewhat downwardly against the bobbin to free the downwinds and bottom wraps of yarn.

  • Patent number: 4815269
Abstract: A silver feed and opening device for open-end spinning applications comprises a housing having a rotatable opening roller associated with a pivotable guide plate having a first sliver guide portion for directing incoming sliver to the opening roller, a second arcuate fiber guide portion extending along a portion of the opening roller circumference in its direction of rotation, and a third debris guide portion extending outwardly from the opening roller and defining with the housing a debris discharge opening. The guide plate is of a unitary one-piece construction without joints between individual portions to prevent undesirable fiber accumulation which tends to occur in conventional devices. Each of the fiber and debris guide portions of the guide plate are spaced sufficiently from the sidewalls of the housing to form side slots which are a multiple of the thickness of the fibers, thereby to prevent accumulation thereof between the guide plate and the housing.

  • Patent number: 4815268
Abstract: A friction spinning apparatus includes first and second perforated drums forming a spinning wedge therebetween with a spinning zone. The drums are driven in the same direction with the first drum having a greater circumferential speed than the second drum and with the first drum rotating into the spinning wedge and the second drum rotating out of the spinning wedge. The drums define an imaginary line at a location at which the drums are closest to each other. First and second suction devices are disposed in the interior of the first and second drums. The suction devices each have an intake slit formed therein. The intake slits follow paths diverging from each another and from the imaginary line at least at forward ends thereof. The intake slits are directed against the spinning wedge and each discharge in the vicinity of the inner surface of a respective one of the drums.

  • Patent number: 4807822
Abstract: A yarn traversing mechanism having oppositely traversing yarn engaging elements and transfer means that disengage yarn from one element and transfer it into engagement by an oppositely traversing element at a plurality of different yarn reversing locations at each end of the yarn traverse. • Patent number: 4804151
Abstract: Automatic winding of yarn on a take-up package of a textile winding machine is controlled with devices including a yarn severing device actuated when the winding is interrupted, a device for sensing the quality of winding of the package, and a processing device that is responsive to a batch change signal which corresponds to an indication of dissimilarity of characteristics between the take-up yarn and the supply yarn. Re-starting of the winding is prevented if the package does not have preset quality characteristics and/or if there is a dissimilarity between the take-up yarn and the supply yarn. Another condition for re-start is the detection by a yarn presence monitoring device that a joined yarn is present, indicating the correction of the yarn interruption after actuation of a yarn joining device.

  • Patent number: 4787566
Abstract: A yarn engaging element is manipulated from a non-operating position through the winding path of a textile winder to engage and guide a yarn end to be spliced to a splicer. After splicing, the yarn engaging element returns at a controlled rate to release the spliced yarn at the winding path, with the release being sufficiently gradual to allow the resumption of winding to maintain tension in the spliced yarn as it moves from the splicer to the winding path, thereby avoiding sufficient slack in the spliced yarn to create kinking and yarn breaking. The yarn engaging element is manipulated by a four-link linkage controlled by a piston-cylinder mechanism or by a camming mechanism.
