  • Patent number: 6305210
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed for fabricating a one-piece can body, with profiled closed end, from flat rolled steel of selected thickness gauge and tensile strength. Such steel substrate is electrolytically metal plated to facilitate sidewall ironing into an elongated sidewall can body for pressurized beverage packs. An axially-recessed bead is formed in the endwall of a drawn cup by pulling sidewall metal for movement into such endwall. That preformed bead being symmetrically positioned in the drawn cup such that a bodymaker redraw of the drawn cup positions sheet metal of the preformed bead so as to constitute a closed end angled portion, which extends from a circular configuration base support toward contiguous sidewall.

  • Patent number: 6280596
Abstract: Methods and apparatus enabling simultaneous electrolytic tinplating of bottom and top surfaces of continuous-strip flat-rolled steel substrate while moving in the direction of its length, are disclosed. Both surfaces are plated in a first cell of a multi-cell horizontally-oriented tinplating line. The stannous ion plating source and the source of electrical power, for each surface, differ. Tin pellets for an upper surface anode are confined in a solution-permeable material confined, within an electrically-conductive lining. Dissolution of surface iron from the steel strip is substantially eliminated, improving the stannous ion plating solution quality, eliminating requirements for harmful additives, and increasing the variety of electrolytically tinplated continuous-strip steel products and processes.

  • Patent number: 6035689
Abstract: Processing steps and tooling (FIGS. 5-7, 10-13 and 14-16) of the invention enable replacement of prior practice rivet button processes [FIGS. 3(a)-(d)] which progressively decreased unitary rivet button sheet metal thickness gauge so as to preclude use of thinner-gauge sheet metal (about 50 to 70 #/bb) rigid flat-rolled steel due to surface cracking (FIG. 4). Flat-rolled steel and rigid aluminum alloy sheet metal can be selected in new thickness gauges and preferred characteristics for container manufacture through use of the disclosed process [FIGS. 8(a)-(c)], which helps to achieve a major portion of desired rivet button height with only a minor decrease in starting thickness gauge [FIGS. 9(a) and (b)] to enable achieving desired final rivet button height with substantially uniform rivet button sheet metal thickness of greater than seventy-five percent of starting thickness gauge.

  • Patent number: 5987951
Abstract: New technology for fabricating a one-piece cup-shaped can body which is formed free of side wall ironing from can stock comprising flat-rolled sheet metal substrate precoated with protective organic coating and forming lubricant. A plurality of successive diameter-reduction operations are carried out on a planar blank and cup-shaped work product during which side wall height is increased and side wall substrate is decreased in thickness to provide controlled uniformity in side wall substrate thickness over about 85% to about 95% of side wall height for such can body. The fabricating tooling provides for a preselected clearance between a punch peripheral wall and a die cavity internal wall in each of such plurality of diameter-reduction operations to achieve a desired decrease in side wall thickness as the precoated substrate is moved into a die cavity by relative movement of its respective punch.

  • Patent number: 5953810
Abstract: Combinations of inorganic corrosion-protection, passivating chemical treatment, and selected organic-type coatings of flat-rolled mild steel of selected thickness gauge and mechanical properties, provide for fabrication of composite-coated unitary sheet metal structures for lightweight and durable roof covering. Weathertight features with provisions for subsurface air circulation, free of liquid from precipitation, are provided by fabricating interfitting slot configurations on four linear sides of a viewable tab portion. Methods of fabrication provide for ease of assembly while providing configurations which compensate for barriers to entry of liquids where linearly-extending slots interfit during horizontally-extended assembly, and provide a horizontally-oriented appearance for viewable tab portions throughout a horizontally-extended assembly of unitary flat-rolled sheet metal roof covering structures.

  • Patent number: 5941050
Abstract: Single station apparatus and processing procedures for packaging production-tonnage coils of flat-rolled sheet metal so as to provide protection from (i) packaged atmosphere, (ii) ambient atmosphere, and (iii) changing ambient atmospheric conditions. Such coil is positioned centrally of such single station apparatus for integrated polymeric stretch-film encapsulation of such wound coil and for securing such coil to a pallet. A centrally-located support of such structure enables pivotal circumscribing movement of a power-driven source of polymeric stretch-film with provisions for control of stretch-film tension. A pallet-mounted sheet metal coil, with its central axis vertically-oriented and with bottom and top planar surfaces protected, is circumferentially wound free of any requirement for movement of pallet or coil so as to encapsulate such coil, in effect, providing hermetic sealing of the coil. And the encapsulated coil is affixed to such pallet by continuous-length polymeric stretch-film wrapping.

  • Patent number: 5928487
Abstract: A new combination of steel strip electrolytic plating process steps which eliminate iron ion dissolution from continuous-strip steel substrate into chemically-corrosive plating solutions, such as Halogen-bath or methylsulphonic acid plating solutions, of horizontal passline electrolytic tin plating means which plate a single strip surface at a time. The previous use of a cyanide in Halogen-bath tin plating operations which formed a hazardous precipitant (prussian blue) is eliminated by eliminating iron ion dissolution from the steel strip substrate. And conversion of stannous ions to stannic ions, which formed additional Halogen-bath precipitant, is substantially eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5861215
Abstract: New composite-coated flat-rolled steel product and new methods of manufacture in which low-carbon steel, as received in cold-reduced continuous strip form is prepared for plating, a corrosion-prevention plating is applied, and a selected polymeric coating with lubricant is applied as the finish surface. The resulting composite-coated steel substrate is cold-rolled to decrease the composite-coated steel substrate gage. Selection of cold rolling steps, with non-use or selected use of stress-relief type of heat treatment before and/or after an initial cold-rolling of the steel substrate as received prior to surface preparation, provides for selective tin mill manufacture of composite-coated steel of various weights per unit area, for example, in the range of about 35 to about 100 lb/bb, produced by cold rolling of the composite-coated flat-rolled steel.

  • Patent number: 5830282
Abstract: Continuous removal of particulate surface contaminants, for example, from flat-rolled steel work product, is achieved free of unscheduled interruption by continuing control of surface cleaning liquid characteristics which enables continuing recycling. A major portion of the cleaning liquid of a large capacity tank is continuously circulated between surface treatment of the work product and a continuous in-line type cyclone filtering apparatus, with continuous return of filtrate to surface cleansing. A minor portion (about ten percent) of the cleaning liquid capacity is used to concentrate contaminants by continuously purging the filtering apparatus. Concentrated contaminants are directed to a non-magnetic tank structure with sources of magnetic flux mounted along its external surface such that penetrating magnetic flux acts internally to separate and retain contaminants. Decontaminated liquid is returned for continuing surface cleansing.

  • Patent number: 5813811
Abstract: Scoreline, profiling and reinforcing features are provided for an easy-access sheet metal end closure (20) and an integral opener (44). An endwall panel (28) is formed so as to substantially eliminate flexing of the sheet metal during rupture of residual metal of scoreline means defining a U-shaped tear strip (30). Such tear strip is oriented with its arcuately-shaped closed end (32) contiguous to the periphery of such endwall panel -with scoreline legs (34, 35) directed toward a portion at its geometric center (26). The opener is fabricated with a chisel-point (92) at its working end (66) to initiate puncture of such arcuate-shaped scoreline by Class I lever action. Rupturing of the scoreline is followed by pivoting of the opener about a pair of fulcrum points, (82, 83) which contact the panel one each external to a, side of opening 62, with movement of the opening about such fulcrum points rupturing the scoreline legs by Class; II lever action.

  • Patent number: 5776258
Abstract: In-line flat-rolled steel cleansing and finishing methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable flat-rolled steel, as supplied with surface areas contaminated with iron fines and other debris from gauge reduction operations, to be continuously processed in-line, free of interruptions for cleansing purposes. Continuous-strip methods and apparatus are disclosed which enable in-line continuous-strip cleansing in a manner which decreases iron fines carried by strip surfaces to a desired level while providing for continuous uniform cleansing. Carry-over of iron fines from the cleansing operations so decreases such that iron content of a coating means is decreased resulting in improved corrosion-protection coating. Diminishing iron content in a hot-dip galvanizing bath increases efficiency of aluminum additions and diminishes iron-aluminum dross.

  • Patent number: 5732850
Abstract: Draw processing flat-rolled sheet metal substrate preselectively precoated on each surface with organic coating and draw lubricant into one-piece can bodies ready for assembly into sanitary can packs free of any requirement for applying organic coating or adding organic coating for repair purposes after fabrication and before such direct usage. Cupping of precoated flat-rolled sheet metal can stock using preselected tooling configurations and clearance avoids any increase in side wall metal thickness gage. Tension elongation during redraw is controlled over side wall height by clamping solely between planar clamping surfaces, tooling configurations and preselected clearances to decrease thickness gage uniformly over side wall height between flange metal open end of can body and curved transition zone at closed end.

  • Patent number: 5692634
Abstract: Rigid container structure for hermetic sealing of particulate solids which emit an off-gas during containment. Provisions are made for enclosing chamber space with a gas-permeable imperforate membrane film so as to selectively separate and retain an off-gas out of contact with container contents. In a specific embodiment, carbon dioxide is selectively separated from coffee contents while the entire container, including such enclosed chamber as established, is hermetically sealed from ambient atmosphere. Provision is also made for venting of a separated off-gas in initiating a rupture of an end closure structure prior to full opening of the container. That arrangement further diminishes the opportunity for inadvertent discharge of particulate solids due to expulsion of gas from inert gas purging and from gas emitted during hermetic sealing.
