  • Patent number: 9388652
Abstract: A hydraulic jar having multiple high pressure chambers includes a jar body comprising an inner body telescopically engaged by an outer body. There is a first contact surface carried by the inner body, and a second contact surface carried by the outer body that engage when the jar body is moved to the jarring position. A plurality of axially spaced pressure chambers are spaced axially along the jar body, with each pressure chamber having a hydraulic delay section and a jarring section. A piston separates the pressure chamber. A hydraulic delay is in fluid communication with a high pressure section and a low pressure section of each pressure chamber and permits movement of the piston toward the second end at a first speed. A jarring valve permits movement of the piston toward the second end at a second speed that is greater than the first speed when in a japing section.

  • Patent number: 7635224
Abstract: A method of adjusting backlash in a down hole bearing assembly involves providing in side by side relation on an outer surface of an inner mandrel a circumferential first threaded seat adapted to accommodate a first nut which engages the first threaded seat by rotation in a first rotational direction and becomes disengaged by rotation in a second rotational direction and a circumferential second threaded seat adapted to accommodate a second nut which engages the second threaded seat by rotation in the second rotational direction and becomes disengaged by rotation in the first rotational direction. The first nut is threaded onto the first threaded seat to place the inner mandrel in tension with a first stop and a second stop engaging a thrust bearing. The second nut is coupled to the first nut to resisting any rotational movement of the first nut in the second rotational direction.

  • Publication number: 20040089461
Abstract: A downhole percussion drilling apparatus includes a housing and a piston rotatably supported within an interior bore of the housing. A first engagement surface serves as a cam surface. A second engagement surface serves as a follower surface. The cam surface has a plurality of inclined planes each of which terminates in a drop off. With each rotation of the piston, the follower surface rises up each of the inclined planes and then falls down each of the drop offs of the cam surface thereby imparting a series of percussive hammering impacts to the piston.

  • Patent number: 6220372
Abstract: Apparatus for drilling lateral drainholes from a well casing comprises a flexible shaft having a bit at the lower end; the shaft extending through a shaft guide conduit anchored within the casing adjacent an oil-bearing formation. The “L” shaped guide conduit re-directs the shaft from an path parallel to the casing, through an elbow, to a path substantially perpendicular to the casing. The flexible shaft is formed of a helically wound outer coil spring and one or more helically wound and smaller inner coil springs residing concentrically therein. Each coil spring is closely fitted within the other. Each coil spring is wound opposite in direction to that of the next adjacent coil spring so as to interfere when under torsion. Bushings are located within the elbow for causing the shaft to flex and turn while permitting rotation and axial movement therethrough. A motor imparts torque into the top of the shaft, preferably through an intermediate driveshaft.

  • Patent number: 5964307
Abstract: A shock tool includes a first tubular member, a second tubular member and a third tubular member. The first tubular member has an interior bore that extends between a first end and a second end. The second tubular member has an interior bore that extends between a first end and an attachment end. The second tubular member is rotatably supported by both radial and thrust bearings within the interior bore of the first tubular member with the attachment end protruding from the second end of the first tubular member. The third tubular member has an interior bore that extends between a connection end and a second end. The second end of the third tubular member being telescopically received within the interior bore at the first end of the second tubular member with the connection end protruding. The third tubular member is capable of limited reciprocal movement relative to the second tubular member. Shock absorbing medium is disposed between the third tubular member and the second tubular member.
