Patent number: 6679341Abstract: A hydraulically powered tractor includes an elongated body, two gripper assemblies, at least one pair of aft and forward propulsion cylinders and pistons, and a valve system. The valve system comprises an inlet control valve, a two-position propulsion control valve, a two-position gripper control valve, two cycle valves, and two pressure reduction valves. The inlet control valve spool includes a hydraulically controlled deactivation cam that locks the valve in a closed position, rendering the tractor non-operational. The propulsion control valve is piloted on both ends by fluid pressure in the gripper assemblies. The propulsion control valve controls the distribution of operating fluid to and from the propulsion cylinders, such that one cylinder performs a power stroke while the other cylinder performs a reset stroke. Each end of the gripper control valve is piloted by a source of high-pressure fluid selectively admitted by one of the cycle valves.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2001Date of Patent: January 20, 2004Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, Norman Bruce Moore, Robert Levay

Patent number: 6601652Abstract: A method and apparatus for propelling a tool having a body within a passage. The tool includes a gripper including at least a gripper portion which can assume a first position that engages an inner surface of the passage and limits relative movement of the gripper portion relative to the inner surface. The gripper portion can also assume a second position that permits substantially free relative movement between the gripper portion and the inner surface of the passage. The tool includes a propulsion assembly for selectively continuously moving the body of the tool with respect to the gripper portion while the gripper portion is in the first position. This allows the tool to move different types of equipment within the passage. For example, the tool advantageously may be used in drilling processes to provide continuous force to a drill bit. This enables the drilling of extended horizontal boreholes.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2001Date of Patent: August 5, 2003Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Norman Bruce Moore, Ronald E. Patent number: 6478097Abstract: A downhole drilling tractor for moving within a borehole comprises a tractor body, two packerfeet, two aft propulsion cylinders, and two forward propulsion cylinders. The body comprises aft and forward shafts and a central control assembly. The packerfeet and propulsion cylinders are slidably engaged with the tractor body. Drilling fluid can be delivered to the packerfeet to cause the packerfeet to grip onto the borehole wall. Drilling fluid can be delivered to the propulsion cylinders to selectively provide downhole or uphole hydraulic thrust to the tractor body. The tractor receives drilling fluid from a drill string extending to the surface. A system of spool valves in the control assembly controls the distribution of drilling fluid to the packerfeet and cylinders. The valve positions are controlled by motors. A programmable electronic logic component on the tractor receives control signals from the surface and feedback signals from various sensors on the tool.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2001Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, Norman Bruce Moore, Ronald E. Patent number: 6431291Abstract: A packerfoot includes a bladder assembly comprising an elongated generally tubular inflatable bladder having ends bonded to generally rigid bladder attachment portions. The bladder includes end portions bonded to the bladder attachment portions and a central inflatable portion. The bladder comprises multiple layers of rubber, one or more of which are reinforced by fibers, preferably S-glass. At each end of the bladder, the layers terminate at different longitudinal positions, forming annular steps on the exterior surface of the bladder. Conforming annular steps are formed on the interior surface of the bladder attachment portions. The bladder ends are bonded to the bladder attachment portions such that the annular steps of the bladder conform to the annular steps of the bladder attachment portions. The total bond length of the bladder to the bladder attachment portions is greater than or equal to twice the length of the inflatable portion of the bladder.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2001Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Norman Bruce Moore, Phillip Mock

Patent number: 6378633Abstract: A drill pipe protector assembly for providing hydraulic lift and improved sliding lubrication to a drill string. The protector defines a tubular sleeve that is attached to a section of drill pipe and resides over the outer diameter of the drill pipe while moving within an associated well casing or well hole. The sleeve is adapted to provide hydraulic lift and sliding lubrication relative to the well casing and thus, increase the proclivity of the drill pipe to slide down the hole while also reducing the development of cutting dams. The sleeve includes a plurality of radially oriented openings which direct drilling mud from the annular space between the sleeve and drill pipe to the annular space between the sleeve and the casing or outer well wall. The sleeve also includes a plurality of wedge shaped longitudinal channels in communication with the radial openings.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2001Date of Patent: April 30, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Norman Bruce Moore, Andrew Dale Fuller

Patent number: 6367366Abstract: A sensor assembly including a sensor mounted on the piston and a transmitter mounted on either the piston or cylinder. Preferably the transmitter includes a wheel which engages the wall of the cylinder so as to rotate as the piston reciprocates within the cylinder. The wheel includes one or more magnets which emit a magnetic field that is received by the sensor as the wheel rotates whereby the sensor provides a signal indicative of the rotation of the wheel. The sensor then sends the signal to a logic component which determines the direction, travel and position of the piston within the cylinder.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2000Date of Patent: April 9, 2002Assignee: Western Well Tool, Inc.Inventors: Duane Bloom, James W.
