  • Patent number: 6166165
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for producing water-dispersible polyurethanes by forming an isocyanate-di-substituted prepolymer and reacting it with a chain extender. The prepolymer can be formed by reacting a diisocyanate with an ethylenically unsaturated precursor which is preferably formed by condensation polymerization of reactants including ethylenically unsaturated reactants and then sulfonating the ethylenic unsaturation of said polymeric precursor by reacting it with a sulfonating agent such as bisulfite, metabisulfite, or a mixture thereof.

  • Patent number: 6127468
Abstract: This invention describes the use of novel blocked mercaptosilanes, wherein the hydrogen atom of the mercaptan functionality has been substituted, in filled polymers. The blocked mercaptosilanes described are unique in that they allow the mixing of fillers with organic polymers to proceed while remaining inert toward coupling to the polymer. The coupling reactions of these blocked mercaptosilicon compounds are triggered by addition of an appropriate deblocking agent, which preferably is tetramethylthiuram monosulfide.

  • Patent number: 6107259
Abstract: An engine oil contains a lubricating oil and an overbased calcium sulfonate having a dispersion of calcite-core micelles, which engine oil has commercial haze free properties, namely a Hazitron test value of less than about 30 and more particularly less than about 15 to 10, and commercial anti-wear properties, namely exhibiting a 4-Ball wear test scar diameter of less than 0.4 mm. The detergent has a TBN of from 100 to 400 and yet a viscosity of no more than 100,000 cps at 25.degree. C. and usually 20,000 to 30,000 cps at 25.degree. C. The overbased calcium sulfonate detergent provides a stable dispersion of calcite-core sulfonate micelles in the oil. The calcite overbased sulfonate is substantially free of amorphous, vaterite and aragonite forms of the calcium carbonate. The method of producing the improved calcite-core dispersion overbased calcium sulfonate provides for reacting an overbased amorphous calcium sulfonate having a TBN of about 400 or more with a C.sub.1 to C.sub.

  • Patent number: 6071977
Abstract: An improved process is provided for the preparation of siloxane-oxyalkylene and siloxane-alkyl copolymer compositions via a hydrosilation reaction in the presence of high boiling point natural vegetable oils as the reaction solvent. The reaction solvent need not be removed from the block copolymer product, and indeed is beneficial to remain with the copolymer particularly when the copolymer is used as a surfactant for polyurethane foam formulations. Soybean oil and linseed oil are the preferred high boiling natural oil solvents when the copolymer product is to be used in the preparation of the surfactants for polyurethane foams. High resiliency polyurethane foam prepared with these natural oils present in the surfactant preparation afforded improved compression sets, wet compression sets and humid aged compression sets.

  • Patent number: 6037008
Abstract: Emulsions comprising a water insoluble or semi-soluble silane or mixtures of such silanes have been found useful when used alone or formulated into aqueous primer systems to improve the adhesion of sealants, adhesives or coatings to a variety of substrates. These aqueous primers are suitable for both inorganic and organic substrates having either porous or non-porous surfaces. In many cases they have been found to outperform solvent based primers. Primers of this type can be used with a variety of waterborne or solvent based sealants, adhesives or coatings including acrylic or polyurethane latexes, high solid polyurethanes, epoxies and silicones. When used with waterborne systems, it is not necessary to wait for the primer to dry before application of the sealant, adhesive or coating.
