Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of highly concentrated free-flowing and pumpable aqueous solutions of betaines by quaternization of a compound which contains tertiary amine nitrogen with a .omega.-halo carboxylic acid characterized in that 0.5-5% by weight of the final product, of a viscosity-reducing compound such as an alkali or alkaline earth metal citric acid salt is added to the reaction mixture before or during the quaternization reaction.
Abstract: The disclosed invention relates to aqueous fabric softeners containingA) 22-30% by weight of at least one compound of the general formula (1) ##STR1## B) 0-7% by weight of one or more amides of the general formula (2)?R.sup.11 --C(O)NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 R.sup.12 !.sup.+ A.sup.- (2)C) 0.5-6% by weight of one or more compounds of the general formula (3) ##STR2## and electrolyte salts, perfume oils, short-chain alcohol and water.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing highly concentrated, free-flowing and pumpable, aqueous solutions of betaines by quaternization of compounds containing tertiary amine nitrogen with omega-halocarboxylic acids by known processes, which is characterized in that a) 30-100 equivalent-%, based on the amount of omega-halocarboxylic acid used, of Mg(OH).sub.2 and/or Ca(OH).sub.2 and b) 0-70 equivalent-%, based on the amount of omega-halocarboxylic acid used, of one or more NaOH, KOH and NH.sub.4 OH are added to the reaction mixture before or during the quaternization reaction.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of highly concentrated free-flowing aqueous solutions of betaines, which is characterized in that at least one of the compounds of the general formula (I) ##STR1## is added to the reaction mixture before or during the quaternization reaction; wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, are each C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl, optionally substituted with hydroxyl, and n is 1-3.
