Patent number: 6826995Abstract: A noise abatement apparatus for a gun having a gun tube includes a plurality of generally spherical pressure vessels, with a first pressure vessel having an end adapted to be coupled to the gun tube. The pressure vessels are adapted for attenuating pressure waves caused by a firing of a projectile by the gun and for being mounted on a surface. At least two of the pressure vessels are in general alignment with one another. The apparatus may further include at least one connecting portion, a catcher for entrapping particulates and for permitting the projectile to pass, and at least one orifice plate or baffle for aiding in attenuating the sound. A noise abatement system includes the apparatus and a platform on which the apparatus is mounted. The system may further include an actuator for moving the apparatus along a track that is in physical communication with the platform.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2003Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: Wright-Malta CorporationInventors: Raymond P. Patent number: 6658983Abstract: A gun muffler and a noise abatement system for a large caliber gun having a gun tube include a catcher. The catcher, which is disposed within the pressure vessel for entrapping particulates and for permitting the projectile to pass, includes a plurality of columns adapted for being removably attached within a pressure vessel. The gun muffler includes a transition section fitted around the gun tube and engaging the gun tube for preventing the escape of residual combustion gases caused by the firing of a projectile by the gun. Attached to the transition section is at least one pressure vessel which defines a pressure chamber for containing residual combustion gases and attenuating pressure waves. The noise abatement system includes a horizontal concrete slab and a gun muffler, as that described above, adapted for being mounted on the concrete slab.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 2002Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Wright-Malta CorporationInventors: Raymond P. Patent number: 5686688Abstract: A noise abatement system for a large caliber gun includes a gun muffler and a projectile stop, both of which are mounted on a concrete slab. The gun muffler can be coupled at an end to a gun tube of the gun and serves to attenuate pressure waves caused by the firing of a projectile by the gun. The projectile stop is longitudinally aligned with the gun muffler and serves to selectively stop projectiles fired by the gun and to selectively permit projectiles to pass. The projectile stop preferably has an opened first end closest to the gun muffler and a second end to which a door is mounted. When it is desired to aim for a target beyond the projectile stop, the doors are opened to permit the projectile to pass through the projectile stop unhindered. When the projectile stop is used to stop projectiles, the doors are closed and the projectile stop is filled with a particulate material, such as sand.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1996Date of Patent: November 11, 1997Assignee: Wright Malta CorporationInventors: Raymond P. Patent number: 5610360Abstract: A muffler for a large caliber gun having a gun tube includes a transition section fitted around the gun tube and engaging the gun tube for preventing the escape of residual combustion gases caused by the firing of a projectile by the gun. Attached to the transition section is at least one pressure vessel which defines a pressure chamber for containing residual combustion gases and attenuating pressure waves. A vent stack is coupled to the pressure vessel at a port of the pressure chamber, and an exhaust blower is disposed in the vent stack for removing residual combustion gases from the pressure chamber between firings. A valve, disposed in the vent stack between the pressure chamber and the exhaust blower, closes during firings of the gun and opens between firings for permitting the exhaust blower to remove residual combustion gases from the pressure chamber.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1995Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: Wright Malta CorporationInventors: Raymond P. Patent number: 5512255Abstract: A graded temperature methanol reactor includes an inclined container containing a liquid heat transfer medium, such as water, having a varying temperature along the container. Conduits, extending through the container and in contact with heat transfer medium, conduct a feed gas having hydrogen and carbon monoxide and permit heat transfer between the feed gas and the heat transfer medium. A copper catalyst is disposed within each conduit to cause the hydrogen and carbon monoxide to react to form methanol, which condenses as the temperature decreases along the container from the upper end to the lower end. Preferably, the conduits are configured as a rotor and can be rotated relative to the container. By using this methanol reactor, methanol can be produced from a feed gas having hydrogen and carbon monoxide in a 2:1 molecular ratio, regardless of the source of this feed gas.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: April 30, 1996Assignee: Wright Malta CorporationInventor: John A. Patent number: 5507846Abstract: A gasifier for producing methane-rich fuel gas from a biomass material feed includes at least one cylindrical vessel, and an axially extending rotor mounted within the vessel. A feeding system is mounted to the vessel at the input end for introducing feed to the vessel. The feeding system includes two independently operated pistons, slidable in an inclined cylinder, and two slide valves, disposed in a vertical pipe above the inclined cylinder. The slide valves serve to apportion the amount of feed delivered to the gasifier, while the pistons selectively seal the pressurized interior of the kiln from the feed hopper. A discharge system for removing residue from the kiln also includes two pistons which selectively seal kiln from the environment. The gasifier of the present invention may also include double-plate intake and exhaust manifolds, and a box beam rotor, optionally including zinc oxide disposed in the hollow, central rotor shaft defined by the vanes of the box beam rotor.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1994Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Wright Malta CorporationInventor: John A.
