  • Publication number: 20090027673
Abstract: A color measurement device includes an error detection function for color printing control. The color measurement device includes an optical measurement head, the optical measurement head being moveable linearly along a color bar region of a printing sheet, and being configured for making color measurements with respect to the color bar, and for detecting color measurement errors by determining whether such color measurements are being made at least in part with respect to regions of the printing sheet other than the color bar region. The optical measurement head may further include a pixel array for tracking a center trajectory of the color bar for purposes of detecting the color measurement errors, and a color measurement engine for purposes of making the color measurements with respect to the color bar. The color measurement device may further include a motion control element and a mechanical track to guide the optical measurement head along the color bar region.

  • Patent number: 7145657
Abstract: An LED-based color measurement instrument including an illumination system and a sensing system. The illumination system includes modulated LEDs and a temperature control system for regulating the temperature of the LEDs, thereby improving the consistency of their performance. The sensing system includes a photodiode, a transimpedance amplifier, and an integrator in the first stage to cancel the effect of ambient light on the output of the first stage. The sensing system also includes a lens system for imaging a target area of the target sample onto the photo sensor in a manner so that the product of the target area times the solid angle captured by the lens system is generally uniform over a selected range of distances, thereby reducing the positional sensitivity of the instrument with respect to the target sample.

  • Patent number: 7050168
Abstract: An instrument and related process for measuring color, shade, gloss, shape and/or translucence of a tooth. First, the instrument uses searchlight illumination to illuminate a tooth with constant irradiance. Second, the instrument uses calorimetric imaging to collect time-separated frames of different wavelengths of light reflected from a tooth and to combine those frames into a color image. Third, the instrument includes a sanitary shield to establish a reference color and a predetermined distance to a target tooth. Fourth, the instrument provides line-of-sight viewing so an operator may simultaneously view a display of the image on the instrument and the object being measured. Fifth, the instrument is impervious to pollutants because it incorporates a sealed measurement window. Sixth, optical measurements of a tooth taken by a dentist are compared to optical measurements of a prosthetic restoration for that tooth to confirm satisfactory matching of optical characteristics of the tooth and restoration.

  • Patent number: 7006210
Abstract: Imaging that uses glare to confirm proper measurement of a sample. An imaging device illuminates an object and generates glare (i.e., specular reflection, diffuse reflection or a combination of the two) off the object's surface, which is displayed on a display as a glare artifact. The location of the glare artifact is compared to a predetermined location to establish adjustment to obtain a desired angular orientation. The imaging device optionally highlights the glare artifact and steers a user to obtain the desired presentation angle. In two other embodiments, the spatial relationship between the imaging device and the object is time-varied. In one, the imaging device monitors changing glare and acquires a measurement when a desired glare is detected. In the other, the imaging device captures multiple images including varying glare artifacts and analyzes the images to select a preferred image having a glare artifact indicative of a desired angular orientation.

  • Patent number: 6888633
Abstract: An instrument and method for measuring light or color using modulated illumination. The system includes an LED illuminator modulated at a specific frequency for illuminating the sample, and a sensor capable of differentiating between the modulated light from the sample and unmodulated ambient light. The instrument is therefore capable of “seeing” only light from the sample, while ignoring ambient light. In a second embodiment, the system includes multiple illuminators of different colors each modulated at a unique frequency so that the sample can be measured at multiple at each of the different frequencies.

  • Patent number: 6870544
Abstract: A system and method for calculating harmonizing colors based on a reference color. In a first embodiment, the invention includes (a) defining a reference color in a uniform color space, (b) converting the hue of the reference color from the uniform color space to an artists color wheel, (c) determining harmonizing colors for the reference color within the artists color wheel, (d) converting the hues of the harmonizing colors from the artists color wheel to the uniform color space, and (e) displaying the harmonizing color information. In a second embodiment, a brown region is defined for colors having red/orange/yellow hues and low chroma values. Additional harmonizing colors are determined when either the reference color or one of the harmonizing colors falls within the brown region.

  • Patent number: 6825919
Abstract: A handbeld color measurement instrument capable of reading both barcodes and sample colors. The instrument includes a single color measurement engine connected to a control capable of detecting and reading barcodes. When a barcode is detected, the control updates program and/or configuration information in accordance with information contained in the barcode. When a barcode is not detected, the control operates to read sample colors.

  • Patent number: 6597454
Abstract: A color measurement instrument capable of measuring both the nonpolarized spectral response and the polarized spectral response of a sample on a single reading. The instrument includes a source of polarized light to illuminate the sample, and a detector for measuring the light reflected by the sample. A rotatable filter wheel is located between the sample and the detector. Nonpolarizing bandpass filters and polarizing bandpass filters are mounted in the wheel in a circular configuration. A drive mechanism rotates the wheel to automatically sequentially align each of the nonpolarizing filters and the polarizing filters with the detector, enabling the instrument to sample both nonpolarized data and polarized data on a single reading.

  • Patent number: 6583879
Abstract: A color measurement instrument with improved sample targeting or positioning. The system includes an integrating sphere, a beam splitter, a video camera, and a spectrograph. The beam splitter is aligned with the viewing port of the spectrophotometer to deliver the light reflected from the sample to both the video camera and the spectrograph. The video camera provides an image of the position of the sample with respect to the viewing port of the sphere, enabling the visual observation and evaluation of the sample position prior to use of the spectrophotometer.

  • Patent number: RE38986
Abstract: The specification discloses a portable spectrophotometer (10) providing improved movement and control of the sample (S) during analysis. The unit (10) includes a base (12) and an upper assembly (14) supported on the base (12) for floating movement. Both a spectral measurement engine (20) and drive rollers (104) are contained within the upper assembly. The base (12) includes independently suspended idler rollers (16), and the drive rollers (104) engage the idler wheels (16), so that at least a portion of the weight of the upper assembly (14) is borne by the engaging drive rollers (104) and idler rollers (16). The upper assembly (14) therefore floats up and down with samples (S) of varying thickness moving between the rollers (104 and 16). Additional upstream idler rollers (18 and 24) on the base and the upper assembly engage one another and bear a portion of the weight of the upper assembly (14) to create tension in opposition to the drive rollers (104) to hold the sample (S) taut.
