Patent number: 7560902Abstract: A duty cycle controller apparatus for producing a duty cycle signal for controlling switching of switches of a battery charger having an AC input for receiving power and an output for supplying power to charge a battery in response to switching of the switches, while maintaining a high power factor at the AC input. The duty cycle controller apparatus includes a current command signal generator having a plurality of signal inputs for receiving a plurality of signals representing a plurality of operating conditions of the charger, a plurality of current command outputs and a processor operably configured to generate a plurality of current command signals at the current command outputs in response to respective sets of operating conditions.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2004Date of Patent: July 14, 2009Assignee: Xantrex InternationalInventor: Thomas Michael Unger

Patent number: 7282813Abstract: A system having input terminals including line and neutral terminals for receiving AC power from a first AC source and having output terminals including output line and neutral terminals for receiving AC power from output terminals of a second AC source and for supplying AC power to a load, has a transfer switch configurable to connect the input terminals to the output terminals or to isolate the input terminals from the output terminals. When the transfer switch is configured to isolate the output terminals from the input terminals, the second AC source is caused to cease supplying power to the output terminals when after phase shifting the voltage produced by the second source the voltage at the input terminals is in-phase with that voltage.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 2004Date of Patent: October 16, 2007Assignee: Xantrex InternationalInventors: Thomas Michael Unger, Mare Badenhorst, James Alexander Eichner, Masautso Wilson Ngosi

Patent number: 7279866Abstract: An apparatus for jumping and charging a remote battery. The apparatus includes a charger, positive and negative charge connectors operable to be connected to the remote battery, an auxiliary battery having positive and negative terminals, and positive and negative jumper connectors separate from the positive and negative charge connectors. The positive and negative jumper connectors are connected to the positive and negative terminals of the auxiliary battery and are operable to be connected to the remote battery. The apparatus further includes a selector responsive to connecting the positive and negative charge connectors to the remote battery and operable to connect the charger to the auxiliary battery when the charge connectors are not connected to the remote battery and to connect the charger to the positive and negative charge connectors to charge the remote battery when the positive and negative charge connectors are connected to the remote battery.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2004Date of Patent: October 9, 2007Assignee: Xantrex InternationalInventors: Peter T. K. Cheung, Tony Ziccardi

Patent number: 7196494Abstract: A method and apparatus for charging batteries in a system of batteries. The method and apparatus involve producing a set of state of charge signals indicative of the states of charge of each battery in the system, successively identifying, from the state of charge signals, a most discharged battery in the system and applying a charging current to the most discharged battery for at least part of a first period of time less than a period of time required to fully charge the most discharged battery before identifying a succeeding most discharged battery in said system. The batteries are charged according to a dynamic charging sequence in which batteries are added into the charging sequence in order of increasing state of charge as batteries already in the charging sequence are charged to exceed the state of charge of a battery having the next higher state of charge relative to the state of charge of the batteries already in the charging sequence.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2003Date of Patent: March 27, 2007Assignee: Xantrex InternationalInventor: Robert Baumgartner
