  • Patent number: 5311422
Abstract: A training system for use in a wide variety of training tasks and environments comprising a user interface simulating the same information available to a trainee in the task environment which allows the trainee to assert actions to the system; a domain expert which can use the same information available to the trainee and carry out the same task; a training session manager for evaluating such trainee assertions and providing guidance to the trainee appropriate to his acquired skill level; a trainee model which contains a history and summary of the trainee actions; an intelligent training scenario generator for designing increasingly complex training exercises based on the current skill level and any weaknesses or deficiencies that the trainee has exhibited in previous interactions; and a blackboard that provides a common fact base for communication between the other components of the system. The domain expert contains a list of "mal-rules" which typifies errors usually made by novice trainees.

  • Patent number: 5305206
Abstract: An operations manual generation apparatus for use with a host system. The apparatus has an input for receiving ordering input data when an operator places an order following a prescribed procedure for requesting an operations manual from the host system. The apparatus has a first memory which stores first information needed to prepare the requested operations manual. The apparatus also has a second memory for storing instruction information which includes a set of guidance text data which describes the minimum number of operating steps needed to be carried out by an operator. Finally, an edit controller is provided for analyzing the first information to select a suitable combination of guidance text data, so that an operations manual may be output which has been automatically optimized to minimize the number of steps which the operator must take to cause the host system to perform the desired function.

  • Patent number: 5299128
Abstract: Data representing a two-dimensional image of the resistivity of a sector of a borehole wall is processed to produce selected flow-line data delineating the boundaries of beds of subsurface earth formations along sectors of the borehole. The latter bed-delineating image data for several circumferentially-spaced sectors is further processed to derive and present data defining the orientations of dip planes, by matching the bed-delineating flow-lines for the several sectors. This is done by focusing the latter flow-lines on a root flow-line, correlating those flow-lines to the root flow-line, and linking the flow-lines to the root flow-line according to a path of minimum cumulative cost.

  • Patent number: 5297033
Abstract: This invention relates to a data processing method for suppressing truncation artifacts mixed into two-dimensional images in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. Two-dimensional measurement data arrays are obtained on a space frequency domain by the combination of phase encoding and a readout gradient magentic field, and a data position providing the greatest value of the one-dimensional data array constituting the two-dimensional measurement data array is obtained in the readout direction so as to estimate the origin of the space frequency axis in the readout direction. A high-pass filter using the estimated origin as a reference is applied to each one-dimensional data array, and data extrapolation is made for each one-dimensional data array to obtain a data array having an expanded region. Nuclear spin images are obtained by inverse Fourier transformation of these data arrays.

  • Patent number: 5291395
Abstract: A system and method for presenting, selecting and retrieving actual samples of wallcoverings based upon selected criteria generated by the user. The user is provided with an input card or brochure listing a number of design characteristics. This input card or brochure includes a chart of color-range cells, each cell representing a range of shades of a base color. Based upon these characteristics, the system would produce a listing of all design patterns, such as wallcoverings which meet these characteristics. The computer system would generate a listing of these patterns. Additionally, the system could include a warehouse/storage facility operatively connected to the computer so as to physically provide the user with the design patterns which were chosen.

  • Patent number: 5287269
Abstract: An access control system and method is provided for an activities center wherein activities are available for customers. The control system employs a plurality of access cards, a comptroller processor, at least one credit station and a plurality of access stations. Each access card is encoded for a respective customer, and the comptroller processes data, creates customer account files correlated to each customer's account file identifier, stores the customer account files, verifies customer account files to determine availability of credit and issues either approval or disapproval. The credit station reads an account file identifiers on an access cards and signals the processor to open the customer account file. An access station is associated with each activity and reads an access card to signal the comptroller processor to open the customer account file.

  • Patent number: 5287278
Abstract: A method for extracting company names from textual information uses a combination of heuristics, exception lists, and extensive corpus analysis. The method first locates company name suffixes (i.e., Company, Corporation) and attempts to locate the beginning of the company name. The method works on both mixed-case text and capitalized text. Upon identification of a company name, the method proceeds to generate variations of the name for later extraction.

  • Patent number: 5285388
Abstract: An echo sounding system includes an acoustic gun which is mounted to the wellhead of a borehole. The acoustic gun produces an acoustic pulse which is transmitted down the borehole. A tubing string is installed in the borehole and has substantially evenly spaced collars. Fluid is pumped from the borehole, or well, by use of a reciprocating pump driven by a pump rod extending to the surface. Fluid is received from a surrounding formation and collects in the borehole. The acoustic pulse produces reflections when it strikes the tubing collars and the surface of the fluid. A microphone detects the reflections to produce a return signal. This signal is digitized and stored. The digitized signal is processed to detect the rate of the collar reflections and the stored signal is narrowband filtered with a passband filter centered at the rate of receipt of the collar reflections. The data signal is further processed to determine the time of occurrence of the acoustic pulse and the liquid surface reflection.

  • Patent number: 5278958
Abstract: The selection of a keyboard on a computer system can automatically be achieved. If any externally provided keyboard which transmits transmission data upon the turning on of a computer system is connected to an external keyboard controller, a selection circuit selects that external keyboard controller for controlling the externally provided keyboard. If, on the other hand, no externally provided keyboard is connected to the external keyboard controller, the selection circuit selects an incorporated keyboard controller for controlling an incorporated keyboard which is incorporated in the computer system. When the externally provided keyboard is connected to the external keyboard controller, the selection of a keyboard by the selection circuit is achieved depending upon whether or not the computer system receives transmission data from the externally provided keyboard.

  • Patent number: 5276615
Abstract: A nuclear detection device, especially a gamma-camera type device which features deconvolution filters. In a gamma-camera variant, the device includes digital filters for deconvoluting electric measuring signals. A transfer function of these filters is opposite that of a circuit having formed the electric signals. It is then possible to separate any pulses which would overlap. Such a system finds particular application in nuclear physics and in particular in the medical field.
