  • Patent number: 7286846
Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling the power level for a mobile station during periods when no data is being transmitted by the mobile station. In one embodiment, data is intermittently transmitted from a mobile station to a base station on a reverse-link traffic channel. When data is being transmitted on the traffic channel, the transmitted data is used by the base station to perform power control operations (e.g., incrementing or decrementing the mobile station's power level, based upon comparison of a received SNR to a target SNR). When no data is being transmitted on the traffic channel, a “zero-rate indicator” is transmitted on the rate indicator channel. The zero-rate indicator is used by the base station to perform power control. Power control based on the zero-rate indicator may use velocity profiles, reliability metrics or other techniques to control adjustment of the power level.

  • Patent number: 7062282
Abstract: Frequency synchronization bursts are detected for a radio communication system such as a GSM cellular telephone network using a two stage correlation process. A first unit performs a first set of correlations to identify receipt of the frequency synchronization burst. A preliminary identification is declared when the moving average of the first set of correlations, normalized for received power, exceeds a threshold value for a number of contiguous samples. After a preliminary identification is made, a second unit performs a second set of correlations to confirm the detection of the frequency synchronization burst. The second correlations are preferably also normalized and confirmation of detection is declared when the normalized moving average of the second stage correlation exceeds a threshold value for a number of contiguous samples.

  • Patent number: 7054636
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for communicating data from wireline terminals to mobile terminals in a telecommunications network, which includes a home node associated with the mobile terminal and one or more visited nodes. To establish communication with a mobile terminal, a wireline terminal sends data to a server in the telecommunications network. The server identifies a mobile identification number associated with the mobile terminal, and based on the identified mobile identification number, the server determines a route that excludes the home node when the mobile terminal is out of the geographical area served by the home node. The server then establishes via the determined route a connection to the mobile terminal and sends to the mobile terminal the data received from the wireline terminal.

  • Patent number: 7016651
Abstract: Techniques for measuring signal quality in a communications link supporting OFDM symbol transfer across plural sub-carriers are disclosed. These techniques employ a link interface receiving OFDM symbol(s) from the link, and a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation unit generating an estimate of a geometric SNR (SNRgeo) for the received symbols based on an average of the logrithmic difference between soft decision and hard decisions for the received symbol. SNRgeo here defines a scalar measure of the link signal quality, which results in a computationally efficient yet accurate link signal quality assessment, and thereby permit selective link characteristic alteration. Only sub-carrier subsets need be used to derive a relatively an accurate SNRgeo estimate. Sharing calculation resources between SNR estimation and soft decision units further reduce implementation complexity.

  • Patent number: 7006842
Abstract: A method for adjusting an OLT for power control, which is capable of closely tracking a low tFER. The OLT is adjusted based on frame quality indicator FQI and channel quality metrics. FQI and channel quality metrics are generated at the receiver of a base transceiver station after reception of a frame. If FQI equal to a logic zero was generated, the OLT is adjusted upwards using a first stepsize. If FQI equal to a logic one was generated for a certain amount of consecutive frames, the OLT is adjusted downwards using a second stepsize. The OLT is also fine-tuned during the intervals between the transitions caused by applying the first stepsize or second stepsize. The first and second stepsizes and the amount of consecutive frames of FQI=1 before OLT is adjusted downwards are determined adaptively according to time-varying channel conditions and received frame quality indicator.

  • Patent number: 6999778
Abstract: A method for enhancing the accuracy of Advanced Forward Link Trilateration (AFLT) position location calculations is disclosed. A position determination entity (PDE) constructs a statistical database of pilot phase measurements reported by mobile stations (MSs) located in a geographic region about a reference base station (BS). When a MS's location is to be calculated, the MS reports a set of PN phase offsets to the PDE. Using only that set of PN phase offsets, the PDE determines a rough estimate of the MS's location using conventional AFLT and also determines the region within which the MS is located. If the PDE determines that the MS did not report one or more earlier arriving PN phase offsets but reported a delayed multipath component, the PDE sends a message to the MS to look for an earlier arriving PN phase offset at a certain time prior to the reported PN phase offset.
