  • Patent number: 4060009
Abstract: A rotor to be balanced has an annular cavity containing two balls free to roll around the cavity. An initially inert thermo-setting adhesive is coated around the cavity. The rotor is rotated to a speed just above its first resonant frequency of vibration and the balls take up balancing positions in the cavity counter balancing the out of balance of the shaft. The adhesive is activated by a temporarily placed external heat source to permanently lock the balls in the balancing position so that the shaft is permanently balanced.

  • Patent number: 4051935
Abstract: A torque-applying hand tool includes a stepless mechanism for turning an object in a desired direction through an unlimited range by swinging the handle thereof. The stepless mechanism comprises a polygonal shaft and rollers each being placed in touch with each side of the polygon shaft. Each roller is selectively forced to one end or the other of each side so that the polygon shaft may be turned in one direction when the tool handle is turned. At one end of the polygon shaft is formed a socket or box shaft to engage with the object to be turned. In such a tool, the stepless mechanism can be made compact with an unlimited turning range of the object.

  • Patent number: 4047601
Abstract: A power transfer mechanism incorporated in a multiple path drive system comprising a transfer case disposed between a source of input torque and a pair of drive axles. Torque is transferred directly to one drive axle and is transferred automatically to the other drive axle through a double-acting overrunning clutch when required. The clutch is biased toward one engaged position, and is prevented from locking inadvertently in the other engaged position by a direction-sensitive blocking device.

  • Patent number: 4036083
Abstract: A transmission having selectively engaged fluid actuated friction drive establishing devices and an engagement timing control system having a trimmer regulator valve for each drive establishing device, a trimmer bias regulator valve and accumulator. The oncoming trimmer valve has a spring biasing device responsive to engagement pressure to increase oncoming ratio drive engagement pressure at a controlled rate, initially at a high rate up to a minimum slack take up pressure, then to gradually increase the drive pressure from the minimum pressure at a low rate in a predetermined trimming time period for establishing the drive and then to increase the pressure at a very high rate to high line pressure. A trimmer bias system pressure is supplied to a bias chamber of the trimmer valves and acts in the oncoming trimmer valve bias chamber to increase the pressure level of the gradually increasing drive engagement pressure proportional to torque demand.

  • Patent number: 4028946
Abstract: A control lever assembly for controlled reciprocation of an operating member which may be a Bowden cable for regulating the flow rate of a pump supplying a hydraulic motor in a hydrostatic transmission. In addition to the usual pivotally mounted control lever, an intermediate lever is pivotally connected between the control lever and the operating member. The intermediate lever is received in a sleeve member which is pivotally mounted about a fixed axis spaced from the fixed axis about which the control lever pivots. The sensitivity of the control lever assembly is thus made smoother and more gradual proximate to the neutral or dead center position of the assembly.

  • Patent number: 4019403
Abstract: A shock absorbing type steering device for use in a motor vehicle, comprising a shaft adapted to transmit a torque from a steering wheel to a steering gear, which shaft consists of a first solid shaft portion and a second hollow or cylindrical shaft portion. The second cylindrical shaft portion includes a small diameter portion and a large diameter portion. Part of the first solid shaft portion is rigidly fitted in the aforesaid small diameter portion of the second cylindrical shaft portion with the aid of shear pins, while a shock-absorbing resilient material is contained in the aforesaid large diameter portion of the second cylindrical shaft portion. The shock absorbing material is of such a property that it is ruptured due to stresses exceeding a given level. A passage leading from the interior of the aforesaid large diameter portion of the second cylindrical shaft portion to atmosphere runs either through the first solid shaft portion or through the second cylindrical shaft portion.

  • Patent number: 3961542
Abstract: A cam operated control link mounts on the trunnion shaft of a transmission swash plate through an interposed elastomeric collar or bushing providing for both a damping of vibration transfer from the transmission to the controls and an initial deflection lag of approximately four degrees between rotation of the link and rotation of the trunnion shaft and associated swash plate. Limit pin means preclude an independent movement of the link relative to the trunnion shaft beyond pre-set extremes.

  • Patent number: 3943791
Abstract: An articulated handle comprises a firm arm pivotally mounted on a stationary support and a second arm pivotally mounted on the first arm to pivot perpendicular relative to pivotal movements of the first arm. A lever is also pivotally mounted on the support and a connecting rod is pivotally interconnected between the lever and the second arm. The valve stems of adjacent control valves are operatively connected to the first arm and to the lever, respectively, whereby movement of the handle in one direction will actuate one valve and movement of the handle in a second, perpendicular direction will reciprocate the other valve.

  • Patent number: 3943793
Abstract: A collapsible steering wheel column of the resettable type for motor vehicles that progressively absorbs the energy of an operator's body which is thrust upon the steering wheel in an accident or crash. The steering column includes two longitudinally extending and telescopically slidable coacting members. The members are held in a normal operating position by a resilient torus between their interface and are rotatably coupled to each other. The torus is set in a radially inwardly facing annular recess of the outer member while the inner circumference of the torus is received in an opposing radially outwardly facing annular recess of the inner member to maintain a normal operating position until a disengaging impact force occurs. The outer member carries a shock-absorbing resilient pad with a central bore that is axially and radially engaged by a tapered conical portion on the other member upon telescoping movement. The pad progressively cushions and absorbs the energy from the impact upon the steering wheel.

  • Patent number: 3938632
Abstract: A combination of a sprag clutch and a deep-groove ball bearing has a cage ring made of two identical radial halves. Each cage ring half has circumferentially spaced first recesses each accommodating and pivotally supporting a spring-biased sprag; circumferentially spaced alternating pockets for captively holding a bearing ball; and second recesses each nestingly receiving a bearing ball. The number of pockets and the number of second recesses in each cage ring half each equals one half the number of bearing balls in the ball bearing. The two cage ring halves are staggered with respect to one another to the extent of one bearing ball pitch, so that with any pocket on either cage ring half there is axially aligned a second recess in the other cage ring half.

  • Patent number: 3935749
Abstract: An improved starting apparatus is utilized in association with a starting motor to effect rotation of an engine ring gear. The starting apparatus includes a pinion gear which is movable from a disengaged position to an engaged position in meshing engagement with an engine ring gear. If the pinion gear teeth and ring gear teeth are misaligned as the pinion gear is moved toward the engaged position, a plurality of balls cooperate with surfaces of grooves extending transversely to the path of movement of the pinion gear to effect rotational movement of the pinion gear relative to the engine ring gear. This pinion gear rotation moves the pinion gear teeth into alignment with the engine ring gear teeth and thereby enables the pinion gear to move into meshing engagement with the ring gear.
