  • Patent number: 8284516
Abstract: A PMR writer is disclosed wherein a magnetic assist layer (MAL) made of an anisotropic (?Ku) or (+Ku) magnetic material is formed along a main pole trailing side to optimize the vertical magnetic field and field gradient at the air bearing surface. A Ru seed layer is formed between the main pole and (?Ku) MAL to induce a hard axis direction toward the main pole. A (?Ku) MAL is preferably comprised of hcp-CoIr while CoPt and FePt are examples of a (+Ku) MAL. The MAL has a down-track thickness from 5 to 20 nm, a width equal to the track width in a cross-track direction, and extends 100 to 500 nm in a direction toward a back end of the main pole. As a result, flux leakage from the main pole to trailing shield is reduced and aerial density is increased. A method for fabricating the PMR writer is provided.

  • Patent number: 8243384
Abstract: Inner circumferential surfaces of a rotor holder and a turntable are in contact with an outer circumferential surface of a shaft. This stabilizes coaxiality of both the rotor holder and the turntable with respect to the shaft. An upper cover portion of the rotor holder includes fixing holes. The turntable includes fixing projections arranged to extend through the fixing holes to be in contact with a lower surface of the upper cover portion. A base end portion of each fixing projection is arranged at a level higher than that of an upper end portion of a corresponding one of the fixing holes. Therefore, even if dimensional errors of the rotor holder and the turntable cause a radial displacement between any fixing projection and a corresponding one of the fixing holes, the rotor holder and the turntable can be fixed to each other while maintaining coaxiality therebetween.

  • Patent number: 8243401
Abstract: A tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) read sensor with a Co—Fe—B lower sense layer and a Co—Hf upper sense layer is disclosed. In order for the dual sense layers to exhibit a negative saturation magnetostriction (?S), their Fe contents are either substantially reduced or even eliminated, instead of adding a conventional Ni—Fe film as an additional sense layer. By optimizing compositions and thicknesses of the dual sense layers, the dual sense layers indeed exhibit a negative ?S, while the TMR sensor exhibits a TMR coefficient (?RT/RJ) of greater than 80% at a junction resistance-area product (RJAJ) of less than 2 ?-?m2.

  • Patent number: 8238059
Abstract: A PMR writer is disclosed wherein one or more of a trailing shield, leading shield, and side shields are composites with a first section made of an anisotropic (-Ku) magnetic layer adjoining a gap layer and a second section comprised of an isotropic soft magnetic layer formed on a side of the first section that faces away from the main pole. There may be a non-magnetic Ru layer between each first and second section to prevent interlayer coupling. Each first section has a hard axis in a direction toward the main pole and is comprised of hcp-CoIr, dhcp-CoFe, a?-Fe—C, or NiAs-type Mn50Sb50 with a thickness from 50 to 500 nm.
