  • Patent number: 6522871
Abstract: The frequency error of an oscillator is minimized by characterizing the operating environment of the oscillator. An electronic device monitors parameters that are determined to have an effect on the frequency accuracy of the internal frequency source. Temperature is one parameter known to have an effect on the frequency of the internal frequency source and a primary contributor to device temperature is the RF Power Amplifier (PA). The electronic device collects and stores the activity level of the PA. The effective PA duty cycle over a predetermined period of time is calculated. The LO operating environment is stabilized by operating the PA at the calculated duty cycle when the LO is required to operate in a high stability mode.

  • Patent number: 6510326
Abstract: In a communication device (100) with an earpiece (110) and a microphone (120), there is a sensor (130) relating a first connection line (105) from the earpiece (110) to the microphone (120) on a system (200, 300) which is independent of the device and of the person using it, such as the earth's gravitational field, and which selects the operating mode QUIET (1) or LOUD (2) of the communication device in accordance with this. The sensor (130) switches the communication device (100) to QUIET when the angle (230) between the connecting line (105) and the plumbline (205) of the gravitational field basically corresponds to the angle (330) between a second connecting line between the ear (310) and the mouth (320) of a person (300) who is authorized to make the call, so as to bar other persons (400) who are in the vicinity (X2) from hearing the output from the communication device loudspeaker (110).

  • Patent number: 6501958
Abstract: A method for controlling forward power utilizing 13K erasure indicator bit in a CDMA system improves the call quality and subscriber capacity by setting a nominal_gain, a maximum traffic channel gain (max_tx_gain), a minimum traffic channel gain (min_tx_gain), and a reduction rate in an optimal combination, wherein the nominal_gain is initial gain of primary traffic channel, the max_tx_gain is maximum gain of traffic channel, the min_tx_gain is minimum gain of traffic channel, and the reduction rate represents a cycle rate to decrease the digital gain by 1 for the received frames. The nominal_gain satisfies E b N o = E c I o + P .

  • Patent number: 6470176
Abstract: Handheld radiotelephones are provided with battery packs that facilitate the transmission of a person's voice to internally mounted microphones. A radiotelephone housing end portion is provided with an aperture that is in acoustic communication with an internally mounted microphone. A passageway extends through a battery pack from a sound inlet in a front portion thereof to a sound outlet in an end portion thereof. The sound outlet is in acoustic communication with the aperture when the battery pack is removably secured to the housing end. Accordingly, the sound inlet is in acoustic communication with the microphone via the passageway.

  • Patent number: 6466800
Abstract: A method and system are provided for selecting a communication channel in a wireless communication system. The method and system include defining a plurality of channel groups. Each channel group corresponds to a plurality of communication channels. The method and system also includes setting a set counter to the channel group having the current communication channel. Further, the set counter is incremented after each channel hop and an index counter is incremented when the set counter resets. Next, a sequence number is determined as a function of the set counter and an identifier is associated with the wireless communication device. The method and system continues with determining an offset as a function of the sequence number and the index counter and determining a next communication channel as a function of the set counter and the offset.

  • Patent number: 6463105
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided which calculate a carrier to interference ratio of a channel using an approach which accounts for variations in the channel response characteristics over the estimation evaluation time period. The time variations may be taken into account by various alternative approaches including breaking the sample period into a series of sub-sample estimation windows and applying a different constant channel response estimate to each sub-sample estimation window or by applying a time varying model to the channel when generating the channel response estimate (such as a least squares error fit to a first order or higher order equation). Accordingly, the systems and methods of the present invention may provide for improved estimates of the carrier to interference ratio, particularly for channels subject to multi-path fading effects such as those which may result from movement of a mobile terminal during measurements of the channel.

  • Patent number: 6445692
Abstract: The present invention utilizes a filter that works on an algorithm that filters out multiuser and multi-path interference. The algorithm is programmed into the DSP processors of receiver handsets and base stations in cellular and multihop wireless radio networks which use the CDMA technology. It can also be implemented in hardware. Additionally, the invention works in a blind manner such that it learns without requiring training samples. The algorithm can be expressed as updating the receiver parameter vector f(n) as: f(n+1)=[I−C(CHC)−1CH][f(n)−mfy(n)yH(n)f(n)]+C(CHC)−1g(n) wherein y(n) is a data vector for each transmitted bit W1(n) from user 1, the receiver will estimate that bit by filtering y(n), i.e. w1(n)=fH(n)y(h), where H denotes Hermitian; g(n) corresponds to the multipath parameters and is updated by a separate revision; and C is a matrix constructed from elements of the desired user's spreading code.

  • Patent number: 6442385
Abstract: A time diversity satellite system provides geosynchronous satellites in tundra orbits in three orbital planes. The satellites traverse a common figure-eight ground track comprising northern and southern loops. Power modes and early and late operating modes of the satellites are selectively switched to select the satellite currently traversing the northern loop be the late satellite delivering a late signal, that is, a delayed early signal, to satellite receivers. A receiver can therefore employ a relatively small buffer for storing the early satellite signal for only the selected channel in a multi-channel TDM content signal without experiencing latency problems when selecting a new channel.

  • Patent number: 6400956
Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system uses location or position information to initiate actions on behalf of travelers. As position information of a wireless mobile unit is received, it is compared to stored position information of a remote location, such as a home. As the traveler approaches his home, and gets within a certain distance of home, a signal is then sent to a controller within his home to perform an action or instruct the performance of an action.
