  • Patent number: 9942813
Abstract: A system is provided for coordinating inter-satellite handoff in a telecommunications system that includes first and second communication satellites and a communications apparatus. The communications apparatus is configured to generate commands for transmission to the first communication satellite and the second communication satellite to steer respectively first and second spot beams to track and communicate with a user terminal during respective time intervals. The communication interface is also configured to determine a trajectory of the user terminal and a predicted handoff point on the trajectory for handoff between the satellites in which the second spot beam is automatically steered to the handoff point or a point proximate thereto no sooner than the user terminal is within the second spot beam when steered to the predicted handoff point.

  • Patent number: 9940833
Abstract: A method for detecting the direction of travel of and for determining travel in the wrong direction by a vehicle which is moving on a lane in a section of road. Identifiers are respectively emitted by an arrangement of radio beacons which are arranged along the lane. When the vehicle travels through the section of road, a radio receiver, in particular a cell phone device, which is arranged in the vehicle, successively receives the emitted identifiers of the radio beacons. The actual direction of travel of the vehicle is determined on the basis of the sequence of the successively received identifiers.

  • Patent number: 9942741
Abstract: An incident monitoring and response system may include observer communication devices that are located in an area where an incident is occurring within a monitored region. A monitoring station sends an incident mode message to observer communication devices within the area. Upon receiving the incident mode message, the observer communication devices enter an incident mode in which the functionality of the device is limited. This limited functionality includes limiting the types of communications that an observer may engage in and the types of applications that can be accessed.

  • Patent number: 9883347
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for determining a specific velocity of a device attached to a wireless network. The specific velocity can be determined using a handover count of the base station boundary transitions over a time window and/or using a set of sojourn time samples that each denote the duration the device remains in the zone of a particular base station. Techniques operate effectively in cellular networks having high base station densities. The specific velocity estimates may be inputs to components on the device or network to adjust a local device function or performance behavior.

  • Patent number: 9820260
Abstract: Embodiments use the principles of self-organizing networks to allocate resources to allow spectrum owners to share spectrum with wireless carriers according to defined license conditions. A spectrum licensee holds the licensing conditions of the spectrum licensed by the spectrum owners. This licensed spectrum is referred to as secondary spectrum. A self-organizing network server requests access to secondary spectrum. The spectrum licensee grants access to the secondary spectrum along with the licensing conditions for access. The self-organizing network server monitors the conditions associated with the license and/or delegates the responsibility for monitoring conditions associated with the license to others. When the license conditions are met, enhanced Node B systems may begin using the secondary spectrum according to the license conditions. When the license conditions are no longer met, enhanced Node B systems discontinue use of the secondary spectrum.

  • Patent number: 9813997
Abstract: A wireless transmission system disclosed herein includes a transmitter-receiver pair. When a dielectric object approaches the transmitter-receiver pair, a signal strength of a transmitted carrier wave increases at the receiver. In response, transmission power of the transmitter can be dynamically reduced. When the dielectric object moves away from the transmitter-receiver pair, a signal strength of the carrier wave decreases at the receiver. In response, the transmission power of the transmitter can be dynamically increased.

  • Patent number: 9794787
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods that employ various mechanisms to selectively disable mobile device functionality. In general, mobile devices can be utilized to store personal and/or highly sensitive information such as bank account numbers, social security numbers, credit card numbers and the like. If the mobile device is lost or stolen, data stored within the device can be accessed by an unauthorized user; and, thus, any personal and/or highly sensitive information can be obtained. In order to mitigate unauthorized access, the subject invention provides a disabling component that communicates with the lost or stolen device to render data stored thereon inaccessible. Further, the data can be stored in local or remote locations to backup stored information, thereby creating a more robust and reliable method of storing information important to the device owner. These features provide enhancements over conventional mobile device security techniques.
