  • Patent number: 4676451
Abstract: The spool shaft of a spinning-type fishing reel is provided with a friction brake. The brake has plural disks axially biased against a stationary housing part by a spring to normally hold the spool shaft from rotating except upon an application of force applied against the spool, e.g. by a fish, beyond desired level. The force of the spring determining the brake force is adjusted by turning a knob at the rear of the reel. However, this adjustment can be modified by a second brake adjustment in the form of a manually operated level which enables the angler to control instantaneously the unwinding of the spool independently of the first brake adjustment. The second brake adjustment may act through mechanical linkage or a combination of linkage and a fluid system.

  • Patent number: 4674698
Abstract: This invention relates to structure for converting a spin-cast style reel between left-hand and right-hand operation. A crank handle is selectively, threadably mounted at the ends of a crank shaft which has a face gear in mesh with a pinion gear on a center shaft associated with a spinner head assembly. The invention also contemplates the provision of separate drag actuators through which drag braking pressure can be applied, from either side of the reel, depending upon from which side the reel is operated. A still further aspect of the invention is the provision of a removable boss used to support one end portion of the crank shaft. The boss is slidably associated with the reel body. By removing the boss, placement and removal of the crank shaft with its associated gearing is facilitated.

  • Patent number: 4671465
Abstract: An automatic armature winding machine that is capable of winding straight and skewed stack armatures of various diameters and lengths and of achieving high percentages of slotfill is disclosed. A transfer plate for directing a plurality of wires for winding the core of the armature to a winding area in preparation for the winding operation is mounted in translational relationship to the armature core to be wound. The wires within the concentration area are simultaneously wound into the slot of the armature core by moving the wires through the armature core so that the wires are forced into the slots of the armature core. Upon completing the first winding stroke, hydraulic actuated forming blocks are radially activated to push the wires further into the slots of the armature core to make space for the subsequent turns to be wound. Thereafter, the winding stroke is repeated by moving the wires back through the armature core, after which the blocking function is repeated.

  • Patent number: 4664330
Abstract: Friction drag washers for the drag assemblies of fishing reels are provided. The washers are made of a phenolic fiber material which is impregnated under vacuum with oil or an oil and STP oil additive solution. The viscosity of the oil can be changed to accommodate the general conditions of intended use of the reel (i.e. high drag setting--high speed withdrawal--low viscosity oil). The impregnation of the washer affords a self-lubricating lifetime washer which does not need to be changed during the life of the reel. The impregnated washers are easier and quicker to install since they do not need to be greased as they are installed.
