  • Patent number: 4463621
Abstract: An automatic transmission has two countershafts, two clutches, an output shaft, two synchronizers, two input shafts adapted to be driven from the crankshaft of an engine through either of the two clutches and a one-way clutch that connects the first gear to the output shaft. The overrunning clutch is continuously driven but is easily overrun when higher gear ratios than the first ratio are selected. Changes of gear ratio result upon alternate engagement and disengagement of the friction clutches. Synchronizer clutches engage the next higher or lower speed ratio than the ratio in which the transmission instantaneously operates.

  • Patent number: 4462279
Abstract: The shift valve operates in response to a governor pressure counteracting a throttle pressure and in response to a detent pressure used in a kickdown operation. The valve is capable of shifting up from a first speed range to a second speed range as well as shifting down from second speed to the first speed under control of the shift valve. The 1-2 shift valve comprises a spool having a pressure bearing surface adapted to receive either the throttle pressure or the detent pressure. In the first speed position, the spool closes off the detent line pressure and receives the throttle pressure on the pressure bearing surface. On the other hand, at the second speed position, the spool closes off the throttle pressure line and receives the detent pressure on the pressure bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 4462275
Abstract: To control transmission ratio of a continuously variable transmission connected to a combustion engine (e.g., for optimal fuel efficiency of a powered vehicle), effective diameter of pulleys is controlled in response to an electrical signal. A control signal suitable for comparison with hydrostatic pressure values is produced by a computing device based on input signals representing load, speed, and other operating conditions and based further on stored data representing engine characteristics. A control signal is conveniently used to control hydrostatic pressure by means of electromagnetically operated valves. Especially when pulsed valves controlled by digital electric signals are used, a reservoir is used to establish a steady hydrostatic pressure. Such control device is readily adapted to different engines by replacement of stored characteristic data.

  • Patent number: 4461188
Abstract: First and second concentric input shafts are connected to an engine crankshaft through friction clutches, one for each input shaft. Two countershafts carrying forward speed ratio and reverse drive output gears are driven from pinions carried by each of the input shafts. Synchronizer clutches connect the output gears to the respective countershafts. The first forward speed output gear is mounted on its countershaft by way of an overrunning clutch. One forward speed output gear is continuously engaged with the reverse drive output gear and functions as a reverse idler for changing the direction of rotation of the countershaft when reverse drive is selected.

  • Patent number: 4458546
Abstract: A load-splitting transmission has its drive shaft journaled with respect to the housing in an axial bearing and supported only by a radial bearing forming part of the clutch connecting said drive shaft to the output shaft of an engine so that the axis of the drive shaft is swingable relative to the housing. The drive shaft carries a drive gear which meshes with a pair of load-splitting gears so that the swinging movement allows torque compensation between the two drive trains of which the load-splitting gears are a part.

  • Patent number: 4457186
Abstract: A transmission device for providing positive geared, constant mesh, variable speed, rotary power transmission. The device includes a power drive shaft with an axially mounted, slidable drive gear. This drive gear is locked in rotational movement by means of an axial guide track fixed to the power drive shaft. A transmission drive shaft is fixed in oblique orientation with respect to the power drive shaft and carries a plurality of reduction gears of decreasing radius. The reduction gears are mounted on the transmission drive shaft on a spherical mounting race which permits the reduction gear to have an axis of rotation oblique to the axis of the transmission drive shaft and parallel with the axis of the power drive shaft. The spherical mounting race includes projections which are housed in elongated recesses within each reduction gear.

  • Patent number: 4454787
Abstract: In a drive system for the threshing cylinder of a combine harvester, a conventional infinitely variable V-belt drive, is combined with a two-speed final drive assembly. In the final drive assembly, an epicyclic gear train is housed within the body of a driven sheave carried on the cylinder shaft. A sun gear of the gear train is controllable externally of the sheave body and may be pinned for rotation with the sheave in a direct drive mode, or nonrotatably secured relative to the combine body for a cylinder speed reducing mode. The combine cylinder speed is therefore infinitely variable within, selectively, either an upper range or a lower range.

  • Patent number: 4449416
Abstract: A four speed, constant mesh transmission includes an input and an output shaft with four pairs of driver and driven gears respectively spaced on the two shafts. A pair of gear couplings are slidably disposed on the output shaft and splined for rotation therewith. Each gear coupling is selectively moved along the shaft for engagement with one of the driven gears by means of a pair of shift forks respectively engaged with the gear couplings. The two shift forks are slidably disposed on a guide rail which extends parallel to the input and output shafts of the transmission. Each shift fork includes a solenoid lock which may be selectively engaged with the guide rail for preventing sliding movement of the shift fork with respect thereto.

  • Patent number: 4444072
Abstract: A shift mechanism for a two-speed countershaft type transmission is operable to move the shift rail in response to a rotary input drive motor. The shift mechanism includes a control mechanism which ensures that the rotation of the drive motor will stop when the neutral position is effected during a gear interchange prior to completion of a shift so that normal gear synchronizing will occur. The control mechanism includes a rotatable plate having a slotted portion which includes stop surfaces at the neutral position. The stop surfaces are engaged during gear interchange by a pin member which must be selectively moved prior to completion of the gear interchange. Selective movement of the pin member is controlled by a solenoid mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4428247
Abstract: A simple change gear transmission utilizing an improved clutch structure and/or an improved idler structure to provide compounded countershafts is provided. The improved clutch structure involves the use of axially adjacent tube clutch members (76, 90) operated by side-by-side shift forks (86, 100) to selectively clutch one at a time four axially adjacent mainshaft gears (50, 52, 54, 56) to a mainshaft (18). Compound countershaft (16) comprising a forward portion (20) and a rearward portion (22) are provided for increasing the number and/or range of gear ratios. A combination tube clutch-idler shaft (108) is utilized to provide increased reduction to the rearward countershaft portion for first gear and reverse gear operation of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 4425823
Abstract: One or more remotely disposed valves may be opened or closed by a control handwheel by means of rotatable flexible shafting and mechanism associated therewith which may reduce the torque required to rotate the hand wheel and permitting much lighter weight and less costly flexible shafting to be employed. The associated mechanism comprises pulley-belt arrangements and/or gearing structures at each valve to be opened or closed as well as an optional pulley-belt arrangement cooperating with the handwheel. A torque limiting clutch device may readily be incorporated into the system for providing necessary slippage to the valve stems in the event one or more of the remotely disposed valves reaches the end of its travel prior to the remaining valves in the system.

  • Patent number: 4423645
Abstract: A spinner for turning a well drilling kelly or the like and including a member connectible to the kelly to drive it rotatively, a reversible motor, and a drive between the rotor of the motor and said member including two gears for driving the member in opposite directions respectively, with the two gears being mounted by threaded connections for axial movement between active driving positions and retracted non-driving positions. Rotation of the motor acts by virtue of a threaded connection or connections to shift one of the gears to its active driving position to turn the driven member in a first direction, while retaining the second of the gears in its retracted position. Rotation of the motor in the opposite direction acts to shift the second of the gears to active position driving the member in its second direction while retracting the first of the gears to its inactive position.
