Abstract: Low molecular weight polydisperse isocyanate-functional acrylic polymers are prepared by direct reaction of the monomers, e.g., 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate, in the presence of a mercaptan chain-transfer agent and a polymerization initiator but in the substantial absence of water and of Lewis-type bases.
Abstract: Novel organic polymers have a chain carrying active groups, a hydroxyl, alkoxy, halogen, thiol or sulphide group or a second active group being attached as a substituent to a carbon which is in the alpha position with respect to that carrying the first active group. The preparation of these polymers is advantageously effected using polymers carrying epoxide bridges, which are opened by the action of an active cosmetological or other active compound. These polymers are particularly suitable for the protection of the skin against solar radiation, as creams or gels for the skin and for the hair and/or as pigments.

Abstract: Rubber, hydrocarbons, i.e., resins, and other useful by-products are extracted, recovered and isolated from shrubs such as guayule and guayule-like shrubs by a procedure wherein the entire non-defoliated shrub, after being comminuted, is processed in an aqueous and/or a non-aqueous system. An optional water treatment step can be used to remove water solubles and/or facilitate processing and achieve increased yield of desired by-products.
Abstract: Dual cure site acrylate elastomers containing both active halogen and carboxyl groups are compounded with a combination of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, a Group IVA metal oxide or salt thereof and a tetraalkyl thiuram sulfide to provide compounds having an excellent scorch/cure rate balance and balance of desirable physical properties in the vulcanizates thereof.
Abstract: Improved tack, green strength or non-black filler interaction capability are realized in a treated diene rubber. The method of treating diene rubber to achieve the improvements is shown, together with a composition in which maleamic acid or derivatives of maleamic acid are combined with sulfur or an organic sulfur compound capable of generating a thiyl radical.

Abstract: Polymerization of vinyl chloride in aqueous suspension using a polymerization reactor having adherently deposited on internal surfaces thereof a build-up suppressant coating comprising a product of build-up suppressant activity formable by (and preferably formed by) the condensation of an effective 1-naphthol (preferably 1-naphthol itself) and formaldehyde. The condensation is preferably effected in a base-catalyzed reaction; it may also (less preferably) be effected in an acid-catalyzed reaction. The coating product itself and a process for its production are also claimed.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of a chlorinated polymer having a chlorine content of from 30 to 70% by weight, which comprises chlorinating a polymer in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, removing the solvent using steam and/or hot water in the presence of at least 1% by weight, based on the chlorinated polymer, of an alkoxylation product of 1 mole of a primary aliphatic alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms and at least 1.5 moles of propylene oxide and drying the precipitated chlorinated polymer.

Abstract: A coating composition for paper comprising a mineral pigment and a polymer latex prepared by emulsion polymerization of a monomeric mixture comprising an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and a monoolefinic monomer in a weight proportion of 24.5-50:0.5-5:45-75 in the presence of a chain transfer agent, characterized in that the chain transfer agent is carbon tetrachloride and an alkylmercaptan in combination.
Abstract: Process of obtaining a high molecular weight fraction from a polar polymer which comprises the steps of first, forming a solution of the polar polymer in a solvent which is also a solvent for a selected coacervating substance, then mixing with the solution a coacervating substance having at least two proton donating or proton receiving groups which are opposite the polarity of the polar polymer in an amount sufficient to crosslink molecules of said polar polymer of a molecular weight above a selected range at the solution temperature, thereby forming coacervated high molecular weight polymer solids, and then separating the high molecular weight solids from the solution. The coacervated polymer may then be dissolved and the coacervating substance removed by precipitation.
Abstract: Substantially linear, synthetic, water-soluble or water-dispersible cationic interpolymeric surfactants which are particularly useful for reducing the surface tension of an aqueous medium; such surfactants having a critical micelle concentration of from 0.01 to about 10 percent in water at 25.degree.
