Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for depressurizing a fuel pressure regulator during engine cold start and varying fuel injection pressure after cold start in a gaseous-fueled vehicle. A mechanical pressure regulator may be modified to include valves which may be controlled to depressurize a reference chamber of the regulator when gaseous fuel injection is inactive (e.g., before and during cold start), and to regulate the pressure of gaseous fuel to varying pressures based on electronic pressure feedback and engine operating conditions when gaseous fuel injection is active. In one example, the pressure in the reference chamber of a pressure regulator may be varied by controlling valves to flow gaseous fuel into the reference chamber, and then controlling the valves to exhaust the gaseous fuel from the reference chamber, for example to a fuel vapor storage canister.

  • Patent number: 9347402
Abstract: An intake body, systems, and method for reducing acoustic resonance in pressure tap passages include determining and/or setting the length of the drilling tap passages to a value such that the natural frequency of each pressure tap passage is outside of or does not substantially overlap with operational frequency content of an air stream in the intake body. The intake body, systems and method reduce the possibility of exciting the natural acoustic frequencies of the pressure tap passages, and can lead to improved signal-to-noise ratio when detecting EGR flow using a delta-P measurement system.

  • Patent number: 9316189
Abstract: A fuel injection device and associated method are provided. An injector body defines an axial bore and has a nozzle exit extending into the combustion chamber. The injector body receives fuel within the bore and channels the fuel through the nozzle exit into the combustion chamber. A flow rate control member is movably disposed within the injector body bore and is actuatable by a first actuator to move with respect to and to interact with the nozzle exit to control a flow rate of the channeled fuel. A pintle member is movably disposed within a flow rate control member bore and is actuatable by a second actuator, independently of the flow rate control member, to move with respect to the flow rate control member and to interact with the nozzle exit to control a spray angle of the channeled fuel. The flow rate and spray angle are thereby independently controllable.

  • Patent number: 9303611
Abstract: A starting device for an internal combustion engine includes a pulley mounted rotatably in a housing which can be set in rotation by a tension means to produce a drive torque for a motor shaft by a starter handle and which is connected to an engaging member by a damping spring. The drive torque is transmitted to the motor shaft to start the internal combustion engine, whereby under torsion of the damping spring, a twisting of the pulley against the engaging member is rendered possible until a stop element impacts against a counter-stop to delimit the twisting, which enables a high operational readiness of the starting device. In the case of a defect of the damping spring, the stop element and/or the counter-stop is formed from a material which has a higher strength than the material of the engaging member and/or the material of the pulley.

  • Patent number: 9284865
Abstract: A method includes energizing a solenoid valve of a hydraulic control system according to a predetermined timing schedule to move a valve member of the solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is operatively connected to the switching component by a fluid control passage, such as a passage in an engine block, to deliver pressurized fluid from a supply passage when the valve member moves to switch the switching component from a first mode to a second mode. An operating parameter of the control system is measured. The operating parameter may be a period of time over which the valve member moves, or a sensed operating parameter of the fluid, such as pressure or temperature. The measured parameter is then compared with a predetermined parameter. Energizing of the solenoid valve is then adjusted based on the difference.

  • Patent number: 9212628
Abstract: An abnormality detection device for an exhaust gas recirculation apparatus is provided that can perform abnormality detection with respect to an EGR valve while suppressing the influence of a size relationship between an intake pressure and an exhaust pressure. An ECU (Electronic Control Unit) executes processing for extracting a pulse from an intake pipe pressure value. The ECU executes arithmetic processing for performing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) with respect to an output waveform of an intake pressure sensor obtained by sampling processing, and also executes extraction processing that extracts a “frequency component corresponding to a period of an exhaust pulse”. The ECU executes processing that determines, in steps, whether or not the size of the extracted pulse (amplitude size) exceeds a threshold value. If the amplitude size exceeds the threshold value, the ECU executes processing that determines that a totally closed abnormality is occurring in the EGR valve.
