Patent number: 5208944Abstract: A hinge device for a casing of the type having a body portion and an upper cover includes a substantially L-shaped mount plate adapted to be securely mounted to the body portion of the casing, two washers respectively attached to both sides of the mount plate, a pivotal axle having a mounting portion adapted to be securely mounted to the upper cover of the casing, an extension pivotally received in a hole of the mount plate, a spring member mounted on the extension of the pivotal axle, a sleeve member, a torsion spring mounted on the sleeve member, a follower securely mounted on the extension, and a nut mounted on a threaded end portion of the extension. The nut biases the spring and allows the pivotal axle to be freely pivotable relative to the spring. When a desired position of the upper cover relative to the body portion of the casing is reached, the spring member biased by the nut exerts a longitudinal force on the pivotal axle to retain the pivotal axle in position.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1992Date of Patent: May 11, 1993Inventor: Sheng N. Patent number: 5206973Abstract: This invention, which provides a solution to the long-standing problem of motion-related rattle in torsion balances for windows, is based upon the discovery that the major source of the rattle is related to the movement of the free end of the twisted rod that is mounted within the coil of the torsion spring. A sound-deadening element of resin material is secured to the free end of the twisted rod, being positioned proximate to the extremity of the free end, and the preferred element has a maximum dimension (measured radial to the spring) that is greater than the maximum cross-sectional dimension of the twisted rod but less than the effective internal diameter of the coiled spring. The sound-deadening element eliminates the rattle by preventing contact between the free end of the rod and the spring, and it also acts as a glide to facilitate relative movement between the rod and the spring during operation of the balance.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1992Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Caldwell Manufacturing CompanyInventor: Edward L. Patent number: 5203525Abstract: A hinge system for a curved surface that has several first hinges arranged along a straight hinge line and at least one second hinge offset from the hinge line. In a preferred embodiments, these hinges are fastened to a pylon and support a curved portion of an aircraft jet engine cowl, which may contain a thrust reverser assembly, to permit the cowl to pivot away from the engine for examination or repair of internal components. The hinges also accommodate engine thermal expansion which changes the distance between hinges along the cowl. The first hinges have their hinge points lying along the straight cowl hinge line. The second hinges include a plurality of short first links pivotally connected to the supporting pylon, and a plurality of short second links pivotally connected to the first links and the cowl. The link lengths are selected so that the assembly pivots about a hinge point outside the hinge structure that lies along the straight hinge line formed by the first hinges.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1991Date of Patent: April 20, 1993Assignee: Rohr, Inc.Inventor: Jihad I. Patent number: 5197161Abstract: A molded knob of the type which frictionally engages and fits over the end of a shaft, which shaft end is of generally U-shaped, transverse cross-section created by the removal of a portion of a circular tubular shaft. A hub is formed as part of the knob. A shaft-receiving socket of generally circular, transverse cross-section is formed in the hub. A pair of generally L-shaped fingers are formed as part of the hub and extend the depth of the socket. The L-shaped fingers are positioned back-to-back to define a U-shaped slot between the fingers and hub, which U-shaped slot receives the U-shaped end of the shaft. Each L-shaped finger has a base portion which is molded integrally with the core and a back portion which extends cantileverly from the base portion, with the base and back portions connected by an integral hinge. The back portions of the L-shaped fingers are spaced from each other about their integral hinges and are flexible so as to bend toward each other when the shaft is inserted in the socket.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1992Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: The Grigoleit CompanyInventor: Robert K. Patent number: 5195213Abstract: A hinge device comprising a shaft, a coil spring, a shaft holder, and a bracket. The coil spring has a coiled portion wound around the main portion of the shaft. The shaft holder is secured to a first member and holds one end of the shaft, thus preventing the shaft from rotating. The bracket supports both end portions of the shaft, and is secured to a second member. The bracket, therefore, allows the first and second members to rotate relative to each other around the shaft. The main portion of the shaft has a cross section having a short diameter and a long diameter. The coiled portion is formed of a plurality of turns contacting one another. Each turn extends at a predetermined pitch angle to a line which extends at right angles to the axis of the shaft. The turn therefore looks elliptical when viewed in the axial direction, and has a short diameter greater than that of the main portion of said shaft, and a long diameter substantially equal to that of the main portion of said shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1991Date of Patent: March 23, 1993Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventors: Keizo Ohgami, Takashi Hosoi

Patent number: 5191674Abstract: The direction setting device includes a first connector having a tubular member with a casing extending at an incline from the same and in communication with the tubular member, a spring biased key member which is movably provided in the casing, and a second connector. The casing has a pair of aligned elongated slots, and the key member has a through-hole and an elongated through slot. The second connector includes a tubular top portion with a control notch rotatably and slidably inserted into the lower portion of the first connector where the key member extends into the control notch of the second connector. A plate with a control groove which has two differing troughs is pivoted to the housing in such a manner that a pin passes through the through-hole of the key member, and through the elongated slot of the housing to extend into one of the troughs. Movement of the pin in the troughs can lock the second connector or permit it to rotate with respect to the first connector.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1992Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Inventor: Hong-Fu Zun

Patent number: 5191678Abstract: A spring loaded door hinge comprising a rod that moves with the door as the door pivots. Attached to the door frame is a flange. The door is attached to the rod by means of collars. The tails of the coil springs extend from the rod so that they may, depending upon their position, be in position to strike the door frame flange thereby preventing a large shock from being transferred to the door if it is swung open violently. Also the spring hinge allows the door to be easily opened initially with resistance to the door opening being controlled by the positioning of the tails of the coil springs. The springs are distributed vertically to prevent twisting of the door and frame. The tails of the spring coils are hooked so that the can engage the door frame flange if extreme force is placed upon the door when opening. The hooks set a limit as to how far the door may be opened and prevent the spring tail from binding between the flange and the spring coil.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1991Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Assignee: T.J.
