  • Patent number: 7236703
Abstract: As is described above, an optical wavelength division multiplexing and transmission apparatus according to the present invention has the configuration in which a plurality of slave racks coupling to a master rack can be additionally installed one after another with the master rack. Therefore, in cases where it is desired to expand a function of a transmitter and a function of a receiver due to the increase of a quality of information to be transmitted, the additional installation of the slave rack can be performed without exerting influence on a communication means installed in advance and currently used. Accordingly, it can be expected that the optical wavelength division multiplexing and transmission apparatus is adapted for the optical communication service which is more and more increased in the future.

  • Patent number: 7224905
Abstract: A system and method of remotely extracting information from a communications station by interrogation with a low power beam. Nonlinear phase conjugation of the low power beam results in a high power encoded return beam that automatically tracks the input beam and is corrected for atmospheric distortion. Intracavity nondegenerate four wave mixing is used in a broad area semiconductor laser in the communications station to produce the return beam.

  • Patent number: 7206520
Abstract: An optical carrier notch filter includes an optical coupler with at least first, second and third ports. The first port is configured to receive an output that includes an optical carrier and interleaved optical single sideband signals. An optical bandpass filter is coupled to a port of the optical coupler. The optical bandpass filter separates the output into a transmitted signal that contains the optical carrier, and a reflected signal that includes the interleaved optical single sideband signals. The reflected signal is reflected from the optical bandpass filter to the third port of the optical coupler.

  • Patent number: 7200337
Abstract: An optoelectronic transceiver includes first and second controller ICs. Each controller IC includes logic, a memory, an interface, and at least one input port. Each memory is configured to store digital diagnostic data and has a unique serial device address to allow a host access to each of these controller ICs separately and independently. At least some of the digital diagnostic data is common to both the first controller IC and the second controller IC. The inclusion of two controller ICs allows the same diagnostic data to be stored in completely different memory mapped locations. This allows hosts that are preconfigured differently to read different memory mapped locations on the different controller ICs to obtain the same diagnostic data.

  • Patent number: 7197251
Abstract: An optical modulator provides for precoding of a high data rate phase modulated optical signal. According to one embodiment, the modulator includes a first phase modulator and a second phase modulator. The first phase modulator modulates an optical carrier signal according to a first data signal to generate a modulated optical signal. The second phase modulator modulates the modulated optical signal according to a time delayed version of its optical output signal. According to another embodiment, the modulator electrically precodes multiple data streams and modulates the precoded data streams using a series of phase modulators to generate a precoded optical data signal.

  • Patent number: 7187873
Abstract: An output signal of a single mode fiber (SMF) is spectrally shaped to achieve characteristics of a predefined channel “target” response. The target response is that of a partial-response, maximum-likelihood channel with additive white Gaussian noise. A receiver employs a maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) detector having its detection algorithm, such as a Viterbi algorithm (VA), matched to the target response. Thus, state, branch, and path metric calculations for a Viterbi trellis may be optimized for a channel having this target response.

  • Patent number: 7181146
Abstract: A self-adjusting data transmitter driver can be used for transmission of analog or digital data signal over any suitable communication channel, such as, for example, optical, electrical, wireless and satellite. The optical transmitter driver may be used to drive a single laser as well as an array of lasers. An optical transmitter driver including a laser diode driver can be used to provide modulation and bias currents to drive a laser diode in an optical communication system. A high speed photodiode is used to monitor high frequency characteristics of the optical data signal while one or more photodiodes are used to detect source parameters of the optical data signal. To compute the feedback parameters, parameters including BER, data-eye, discrete optical data integrity parameters and discrete optical parameters are determined using the feedback detectors. The feedback parameters are used to adjust the optical quality of the laser output towards optimization.

  • Patent number: 7174107
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring a set of frequency-resolved states of polarization (SOP) of an optical signal includes a local oscillator (LO), a polarization scrambler, a coupler for mixing the polarization-scrambled signal with the optical signal to produce a heterodyned signal with a radio frequency (RF) component, and an analyzer for passing a fixed polarization component and resolving the polarization and frequency from the RF component. The apparatus is used for measuring, monitoring or compensating the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a working channel of an optical telecommunication system. A method for measuring frequency-resolved SOP of an optical signal includes tuning and polarization-scrambling a local oscillator (LO), mixing the scrambled LO with the optical signal, and resolving the RF signal in frequency and polarization. The method is applied to measure and monitor PMD in a working optical channel, and to dynamically compensate for the PMD.

  • Patent number: 6188499
Abstract: In a wavelength locking method, and in an apparatus and a network system using the method, a wavelength of a tunable filter is caused to track a wavelength of light from a light source by controlling a control signal by controlling an operation condition of the tunable filter in a feedback control system of a wavelength locking system. According to the method, an error signal relevant to a deviation of the wavelength of the tunable filter from the wavelength of the light source is generated, an operation signal for feedback control of the wavelength locking system is generated by using the error signal, the operation signal is detected, and a bias component of the control signal is corrected or renewed based on the detected operation signal such that an absolute value of the operation signal does not exceed a predetermined value.
