  • Patent number: 6650896
Abstract: Alternate methods, devices and systems are presented for providing service providers and/or end users of mobile stations to monitor and/or report regions with high error rates and/or dead zones. A protocol is provided such as to yield the error occurrence, error rate and/or the address of the end user. In some embodiments it also contains location information and time of day information. This information may be collected from the G.P.S., and/or all or a portion of users when there is a significant transmission difficulty and/or an abundance of errors. The collected data forms a database which is analyzed to generate coverage maps. This may include the dynamic aspects of the mobile network. In another aspect of this invention, each mobile station periodically compares its current location with the data base. The results of this comparison enables the mobile unit to anticipate connection problems.

  • Patent number: 6408165
Abstract: Improved adjustment of transmission power in a communication system is provided. In one embodiment, in a point to multipoint communication system, transmission power of a subscriber unit is controlled based on power measurements made at a central access point. Power measurement information based on transmissions occurring at irregular intervals may be combined in a beneficial manner to control transmission output power. In one embodiment, a power regulation process determines a series of difference values indicating the differences between desired received power level at the central access point and measured received power level. A smoothing process is applied to the difference values. One or more parameters of the smoothing process vary with elapsed time since a last available power measurement.

  • Patent number: 6370363
Abstract: A character inputting method for a handy phone or similar terminal unit uses a first and a second button capable of being pressed or shifted independently of each other. The user of the terminal unit operates the first button and/or second button to scroll characters appearing on a display either in the forward direction or in the backward direction, selects desired one of the characters, and fixes it. When the user presses the two buttons at the same, the existing one of the vertical and horizontal scroll directions is replaced with the other direction. The user selects the desired character by the forward or backward scroll and then shifts the first or the second button to fix the character. A device for practicing the character inputting method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6347220
Abstract: In a CDMA wireless base station, signals that have been received by a plurality antenna elements of an array antenna on the receiving side are subjected to beam forming by a reception beam former to electrically form a plurality of uplink beams. Reception is carried out based upon the optimum beam (e.g., the beam for which the power is maximum) among the plurality of uplink beams. A transmission beam former for subjecting a transmission signal to beam forming is provided. Based upon whether an uplink reception signal is present or not, a controller performs control so as to carry out downlink beam forming, thereby forming a downlink transmission beam in a direction identical with that of the optimum uplink reception beam, or in such a manner that downlink beam forming is not carried out.

  • Patent number: 6253085
Abstract: Forward power control for a mobile communication system is provided on a frame by frame basis during a soft handoff of a mobile station from a source base station to a target base station. Each base station runs independent but identical algorithms. A selector runs the same power control algorithm as each base station and coordinates power control between the two base stations and the mobile station during the soft hand-off. The results of the algorithm run by the selector are delayed because of back haul. The selector provides the base stations with traffic gain and frame delay information corresponding to the traffic gain. The base station ASIC, modifies the base station power output according to the SNR data received from the mobile station and the traffic gain and frame delay information received from the selector.

  • Patent number: 6249672
Abstract: An elliptically shaped cellular phone is elliptical in both the front access, the bottom access and the side access. This elliptical shape enables the telephone to be more easily carried in pocket for example. The telephone includes two slidable modules which are string biased relative to one another. Opening the telephone enables answering and closing the telephone enables hanging up. Even when the telephone is closed, however, one part of the keyboard is still accessible. That part of the keyboard can be used to carry out various functions on an incoming call. One function is blocking the call from passing to voice mail.

  • Patent number: 6185408
Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly characterizing a communications channel is used to mitigate the effects of the communications channel as present in a received signal. A satellite (20) transmits a data signal (40) and a pilot signal (50). The data signal (40) and the pilot signal (50) are substantially orthogonally polarized. A user terminal (30) receives the orthogonally polarized data signal (40) and pilot signal (50). The user terminal includes a channel information recovery circuit (250) and a channel effects mitigation circuit (240). The channel information recovery circuit (250) characterizes the communications channel by analyzing the pilot signal (50), and then provides the channel information (260) to the channel effects mitigation circuit (240) which then mitigates the effects of the channel.

  • Patent number: 6163685
Abstract: In a receiver for digital symbols, an input signal received by a tuner is passed via a SAW filter and a controllable amplifier to an input of a demodulator. The output signals (I,Q) of the demodulator are passed via controllable amplifiers to analog to digital converters. In order to avoid the use of a feedback signal from the digital part of the receiver to the analog part it is proposed to use first control means for controlling the output signal of the demodulator and second control means for controlling the output signal of the analog to digital converters. An additional advantage is that both control means can be optimized for their respective environments.

  • Patent number: 6122511
Abstract: A multicellular communications system where transmission between a roving subscriber and multiple base station transceivers is maintained throughout the territory. Each mobile subscriber unit has global code seeds for the entire communications system or an updated neighbor list and continuously searches to access available cell base stations while maintaining a communication link with one base station. Candidate cell base stations are interrogated and communicated with. The candidate base station that requires less transmitting energy from the mobile subscriber unit is closely monitored. When the mobile subscriber unit can successfully communicate with less transmit power than currently required by the present base station, the mobile subscriber unit is handed off to the candidate base station transceiver.

  • Patent number: 6088591
Abstract: A cellular communication system hand-off protocol which helps minimize down time associated with a mobile device roaming among different cells in which different cells employ different communication channels (e.g., different frequency hopping sequences). In a preferred embodiment, each base station is configured to communicate its own particular hopping sequence to all other base stations via the system backbone. Each base station then provides to mobile devices which are registered thereto information regarding the particular hopping sequences employed by other base stations servicing cells into which the mobile device may roam. Such information includes the particular hopping sequences together with an indication of what location in the sequence the base stations are currently at in any given time.

  • Patent number: 6081708
Abstract: A communication system for organizations whose communications are assured via an international private telecommunication network and at least one other network enables a user of an accredited mobile radio terminal to pre-empt the setting up of a call via the private network from a node of the network to which it has access from a base station of a radio network. Each mobile radio terminal of the system can combine a code of the country in which it is located received from a base station with a node identifying indication that it stores and for sending dialling signals including an identification code of a node and a terminal number. The nodes of the private network enable a call to be set up to a terminal from the number of that terminal reaching the node with an identification code of that node.
