  • Patent number: 4680979
Abstract: A planetary gear starter with a molded synthetic resin ring gear supported by a frame is disclosed. The ring gear has longitudinally-extending ribs formed in its outer surface which confront longitudinally-extending inward projections formed in the inner surface of the frame. A cylindrical elastic member has an annular portion which is press fit over the ring gear and longitudinally-extending projections which fit into the cavities formed between adjacent ribs and inward projections in the frame. The projections of the elastic member serve as shock absorbers and elastically transmit torque from the ring gear to the frame. The elastic member has an annular portion which reinforces the open end of the ring gear.

  • Patent number: 4681302
Abstract: An energy absorbing barrier for dissipating kinetic energy upon impact by a moving vehicle. The barrier comprises walls defining a container closed except for a fill opening to admit water. Various configurations of side walls are disclosed. The side walls are resiliently deformable to return to their original shape after being struck, the resilience of the walls and their deformability tending to form a capture region adjacent the vehicle tire which tends to slow the tire and prevent it from climbing and vaulting the barrier. In one embodiment the walls include longitudinally extending, vertically spaced apart traction spoiler channels to reduce the area of contact between the barrier and the tires of a vehicle. Other embodiments include fittings for end coupling of a barrier to like barriers, the fittings permitting adjacent barriers to be located at different heights to accommodate gradual changes in terrain elevation.

  • Patent number: 4679957
Abstract: A ball joint assembly having a primary ball and a primary bearing surface. The primary ball is coaxially attached to a main shaft which pivots near the point of contact between the primary ball and the primary bearing surface. The main shaft controls a coaxially connected secondary ball spaced apart from the primary ball and closely spaced from a secondary bearing surface, similar in orientation to the primary surface, so that the secondary ball floats freely at some predetermined distance from the secondary bearing surface. The secondary ball contacts a normally closed microswitch. As the primary bearing surface wears the main shaft rises bringing the secondary ball toward the secondary bearing surface and away from the microswitch. Eventually the secondary ball will contact the secondary bearing surface and the microswitch will be activated, causing a warning light to illuminate, thereby signalling wearout of the ball joint without catastrophic failure.

  • Patent number: 4679964
Abstract: For use with a subsea well incorporating an external conductor pipe extending upwardly above the seabed, a well support miniplatform is set forth. In the preferred and illustrated embodiments, the preferred embodiment describes a longitudinally split, flange equipped, bolt joined elongate conductor clamp supported on a frame at the bottom thereof and having a plurality of appended upstanding braces. The support frame is adapted to be rested on a seabed and held in place by a number of anchors driven into the seabed at corners. The support frame is selectively installed after completion of a well wherein the conductor pipe extends above the seabed. The support frame may subsequently be removed after installation of a permanent platform. In alternate embodiments, the support frame may be installed as a permanent structure. A boat landing and miniplatform may be mounted on the conductor pipe or the conductor clamp supported by the support frame.

  • Patent number: 4679458
Abstract: A worm gear has a threaded spindle and a threaded nut, the thread on the spindle or the nut or on both having a profile such that the transition regions connecting the thread crown surface to the thread flanks are rounded, as is the crown surface itself. Further, the spindle thread and nut thread are intermeshed with axial and radial play such that radial forces exerted under torque loading are transmitted only by areas of the crown surface, which transmitted forces are supported by the respective areas of the opposing groove bottom. Smooth functioning is ensured even when the threaded spindle occupies a position of maximum inclination relative to the nut.

  • Patent number: 4678358
Abstract: A metal housing is provided with lead in members by way of a compression seal using a glass that can be worked below about 480.degree. C. The housing and lead in members can be preplated in a low cost process to provide a suitable protective coating that is present under the glass after the seal is made. This obviates a post seal plating and therefore avoids the related problems. It also permits using aluminum as the housing material.

  • Patent number: 4677869
Abstract: A linear actuator comprising a ball screw, ball nut, and an endless ball circuit disposed between the two has an improved end closure body having a guide portion extending to approximately one revolution of the helical path around the screw out of the nut, where the balls then depart from the helical screw path and are received in a nonlinear ball passage formed within the closure. The ball passage has a first portion tangent to the ball screw groove and a second portion extending out of the end face of the closure in line with a longitudinal hole in the ball nut so that the balls may be smoothly returned through the nut to the opposite end, for reentry into the helical ball path.

  • Patent number: 4678369
Abstract: A method and arrangement for vertically sealing off dumps to prevent the seepage of water therefrom. A sealing wall is produced around the dump area which is to be sealed off. The sealing wall has at least one drainage sheet which extends over the length of the sealing wall, and is embedded therein. The drainage sheet produces a hydraulic gradient relative to the surroundings, as a result of which the seepage water collects in the drainage sheet. The occurrence and the quantity of the seepage water accumulated in the drainage sheet is determined in a controlled manner, and is withdrawn from the sealing wall.
