  • Patent number: 5167142
Abstract: A method of making a storage tank comprises forming a cylindrical-shaped inner tank with support ribs and forming an outer wall comprised of a series of sections which are at least partially separated from the inner tank's walls between each set of support ribs. Each outer wall section is bonded to the top areas of the walls of the support ribs. The inner and outer walls of the system are both strengthened by the dual side wall support ribs. Secondary containment is provided by the outer wall. A monitored storage tank system is provided by the use of a leak detection means to monitor the closed space defined by the rib interiors, the outer wall and the inner tank wall.

  • Patent number: 5159833
Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining a component of the response of a reservoir to tidal forces (such as the amplitude of variation or delay time) in a hydrocarbons reservoir. That method comprises measuring a variable responsive to tidal forces within the reservoir over a measurement time period, determining a theoretical earth-tide for the reservoir over that measurement time period, and determining the component of the response to tidal forces by comparing the variable measurements and the theoretical earth-tide determinations. Examples of variables that are responsive to the tidal forces are fluid level in a borehole, pressure, and borehole stress. The measurement time period should be sufficiently long so that both a maximum and a minimum variable measurement are achieved during that time period (e.g., fourteen or twenty-four hours).

  • Patent number: 5157962
Abstract: A viscosity measuring transducer especially useful for process control of fluids. The transducer oscillates an immersed blade sensor in the direction of the plane of the blade in order to maximize generation of shear waves and to minimize generation of compression waves. The transducer includes a bar which penetrates and is secured and peripheral sealed to an isolation plate which serves to protect the oscillation driver and pickup adjacent one end of the bar from the sensor blade to be immersed in a fluid adjacent the other end of the bar. Either the bar is relatively rigid and the isolation plate is relatively compliant, or vice versa. In the former case the isolation plate acts as an intrinsic flexible member of the oscillating system of the transducer; and in both cases the isolation plate constitutes a strong impermeable seal between the fluid and the driver/pickup mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5133214
Abstract: A method for post-production reduction of scale factor nonlinearities including testing of an assembled torque coil and magnetic circuit to determine nonlinearities. To reduce the scale factor nonlinearities, the position of a magnetic circuit component which intercepts the magnetic flux passing through a torque coil is changed. The position of the interior surface of a magnetic end cap is changed with respect to the position of the torque coil. The location of the interior surface of the end cap is varied by using an end cap having a plug portion which is selected to have an interior surface at a location which minimizes scale factor nonlinearities. An force-balance accelerometer has an improved magnetic circuit for reducing nonlinear scale factors. The magnetic circuit which provides a return path for magnetic flux from a permanent magnet source includes an end cap having an interior surface which is located at an optimum distance from the torque coil of the accelerometer to minimize scale factor distortion.

  • Patent number: 5127261
Abstract: The invention comprises an improved self-contained, environmentally isolated, multi-parametric measuring apparatus and method for sampling and determining the dynamic loading characteristics of a soil bed. The apparatus is specially adapted to withstand the extreme pressure of deep water applications. In operation, a drill string presses the apparatus of the invention into a soil bed at an uncontrolled rate resulting in a variable penetration rate. The apparatus has a self-contained data acquisition system that measures and records, as a function of time, the force exerted on the sampling apparatus and the depth of penetration as the drill string presses the sampling apparatus into the soil bed. Data is provided that enables the user to determine the static soil characteristics (e.g., shear strength and stress-strain characteristics) and the dynamic loading characteristics of the soil bed. The apparatus captures a sample of the soil for laboratory analysis.

  • Patent number: 5125265
Abstract: A contamination capacitance probe system is disclosed that capacitively mtors whether or not two or more fluids or materials that have to remain separated have been mixed or mingled and that provides first and second control signals respectively representative of the unmingled and mingled conditions. The system includes a capacitance sensor constituted by spaced-apart first and second capacitor plates of preselected size and spacing. The plate size and spacing is selected to render negligible any effect that the different materials or fluids or materials might have on the capacitance of the sensor. Circuit means are disclosed that includes a capacitance to frequency convertor, a frequency to voltage convertor, and a Schmidt trigger operative to provide the first and second control signals. The contamination capacitance probe system of the present invention is operable with any two or more fluids or materials having different dielectric constants and that are either immiscible or miscible.

  • Patent number: 5109698
Abstract: Various configurations of cylindrically shaped transducers are used as borehole seismic wave sources. The basic class of transducers of this invention has an outer shell that is generally cylindrical, and may be comprised of cylindrical sections. The shell or the sections may be pre-stressed or preformed to encourage certain bending motions. Depending on the configuration of the transducer, it approximates a monopole, dipole, or quadrupole radiator. Various actuating means, including magnetostrictive forces and piezoelectric forces, are used to drive the motions of the transducer. These transducers are especially useful for generating compressional, shear, or other elastic waves in solids. For example, in geophysical applications, the transducers are placed in boreholes for either hole-to-hole or single hole measurements.

  • Patent number: 5101657
Abstract: Devices for detecting and obtaining information about an event, for example the presence of a liquid, which comprise (1) a swellable member which swells upon occurrence of the event and (2) a restraining member which, when the swellable member swells, restricts movement of the swellable member and thus causes the impedance of the device to change. In a preferred embodiment the device comprises two elongate conductors helically wrapped around a support core, a swellable, conductive polymer member surrounding the conductors. Occurrence of an event causes the swellable material to swell and form a conductive bridge between the conductors.

  • Patent number: 5095745
Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing subsurface formations, particularly a formation having a permeability less than about 10 millidarcies is disclosed. The test is made by use of a down hole test tool designed in such a way as to control the decompression of the fluid as it enters the tool. The formation characteristics are determined by analyzing the pressure versus time plot resulting from the test. Such characteristics as flow rate of liquid phase mud through the mud cake, formation permeability, formation pressure, invasion diameter, and the extent of supercharging, can be determined. The entire test takes no longer than a few minutes, versus hours and sometimes days for more conventional techniques and test tools.
