  • Patent number: 4784549
Abstract: Axially-extending troughs in a bark of an internally-threaded collar receive setting balls of a driver that apply a torque to the collar through the balls bearing on the walls of the troughs. At a predetermined pre-load, the balls fail the bark and plow through it to develop circumferential furrows, and the torque application on the collar ends. A second torquing with balls at a different axial position fails the bark again at the same pre-load to compensate for any relaxation after the first torque application.

  • Patent number: 4781502
Abstract: An anti-rotation locking device for threaded fasteners which secure rotating parts subject to vibration, shock and the like. The device comprises a strap member and one or more retainer members. The strap member is positioned under the fasteners and the retainer members each have a toothed opening which is installed over the matching wrenching surface of the fastener. Each retainer member also has an arcuate slot which is positioned above an arcuate tang on the strap member. The tang is lifted, passed through the slot, bent about the bottom of the slot and folded back over the top surface of the retainer member to thereby restrain the loosening of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 4780037
Abstract: A fastening assembly comprises a first internally open member such as a collar, and a second internally open member such as a bifurcated plug which is slidable realative to the collar to an assembled position in which the plug is located at least partially within the collar, at least one protrusion provided between the collar and the plug causing the plug to be deformed when in said assembled position, so as to create at least one inwardly directed jaw or fang for use in fastening engagement with a workpiece such as an externally threaded stud located at least partially within the plug, the advantage being that the amount of driving force which is transmitted in the driving direction to the stud through means of the fastening assembly can be minimized, so that the fastening assembly can have a knock-on/screw-off capability even if the stud is resiliently mounted on compressible foamed material.

  • Patent number: 4775273
Abstract: A positionally bistable domed annular disc includes a projection which engages a transverse through hole or a recess in a shaft to be retained. The disc fits concentrically about the shaft and is concave in different directions when in its two stable positions, respectively. In a cotter pin embodiment the projection extends from the outer rim of the disc and is bent to fit solidly in a transverse hole in the shaft. The projection is inserted when the disc is convex toward the hole and not surrounding the shaft. When switched to be concave toward the hole the disc surrounds the shaft to preclude longitudinal and rotative movement of the projection. In a retainer ring embodiment the projection is a plurality of fingers extending from one or both rims and arranged to engage the shaft or the bore in which the shaft is retained in its closed position. In a shaft coupling embodiment the projecting fingers engage two or more shafts in a manner which tolerates axial, radial and angular shaft misalignment.

  • Patent number: 4773684
Abstract: The invention relates to a door fitting with at least one door operating unit, such as a doorknob, a door handle or the like, and at least one cover plate to cover the opening provided in a door, a window sash or the like for the door operating unit, in which the cover plate has at least one round opening for the door operating unit. Primarily in order to secure the door handle against being pulled off, but also in order to help secure the door handle against canting, the invention provides that the door operating unit for such a door fitting has a cylindrical circumferential groove in the area going through the opening in the cover plate when installed, and that the cover plate consists of at least two parts with curved recesses having inner shoulders that are adapted to the groove and which can be inserted into same, and that the curved recesses combine to form a circular opening in the cover plate when the pieces are combined.

  • Patent number: 4770586
Abstract: A bumper assembly is provided employing a fastener device which is received in a slotted opening formed in a sheet or plate. The fastener device is constructed such that an elongated flange is inserted through the slotted opening, and the fastener may be rotated through one quarter turn at which point it reaches a stop position and is locked in position. Upon reversal of rotation of the fastener through one quarter turn the rotation reaches a stop position at which point the fastener is easily removed from the slotted opening.

  • Patent number: 4770587
Abstract: A locking pin formed from an elastic material having in its longitudinal direction a symmetrical cross-sectional configuration having two opposite outlines (3,5), one of which (3) is formed by two straight lines extending from the ends of the pin and meeting between the ends to form an obtuse angle and a peak height (12) measured from an opposite straight line (13), which connects two end points of the second outline of the locking pin, the peak height (12) being larger than the diameter of the bore (14), into which the locking pin is to be inserted. The thickness of the pin at any point is less than the diameter of the bore, whereby the end points are positioned on a shoulder (6,7), which is formed at each end of the pin.

  • Patent number: 4770583
Abstract: Fastening device for fixing a screw or the like in a hole or opening in plaster board, or the like. It comprises a sleeve with a flange placed at one side of the board and a nut fixable against the back of the plaster board. A mounting screw is passed through the sleeve and the nut. The sleeve has an inner cone and the nut has a corresponding cone which extends into the inner cone. As the nut and sleeve are drawn together, the cones engage and spread the sleeve. The sleeve is provided with at least one pair of slits defining longitudinal tongues which are spread. A screw inserted through the sleeve into the nut pulls the cones together. The nut itself is provided with wings which may be bent out against the back surface of the board. The tightening of the nut on the screw thereby results in anchoring the nut against the back surface of the board and pulls the flange of the sleeve against the front surface and spreads the slit sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4768909
Abstract: A high-speed lock nut, especially for attaching a vehicle wheel to the clamping shift of a balancing machine, has a casing or body in which at least one threaded segment is positioned in a radially movable manner. Manually actuating means serve to move the segment radially. The actuating means engage with the segment by means of a radially-acting connecting link guide comprising pins on the segments and cooperating oblique slots in a coaxial disk. By means of the connecting link guide, the segment can be activated easily and securely, even under high contact pressures, for example, with contaminated threads. Furthermore, the thread segment is automatically locked in closed position against the threaded shaft of the balancing machine by the connecting link guide. The construction is very simple.

  • Patent number: 4763933
Abstract: An improved latching arrangement for selectively latching two members together to prevent relative movement there between in first directions. The two members may, for example, be the fixed and sliding windows of a sliding window. The improved latch means of the latching arrangement of the present invention is pivotally mounted on the moving member and is resiliently biased towards the fixed member. The latch means has a lip means that is engagable with a shoulder means on the fixed member when the latch means is in the latched position. The latch means is pivotally moveable away from the fixed member so that the lip clears the shoulder to allow relative movement of the sliding member with respect to the fixed member. The latch means is also provided with a swivel cam extending outwardly from the latch means into a channel in the second member in a locking condition thereof.

  • Patent number: 4762437
Abstract: A fastener snaps through aligned apertures in two work pieces. The shape of the aperture in the first work piece is such that the fastener cannot be withdrawn from it. However, the aperture in the second work piece is so shaped that the fastener can be rotated for removal of the fastener from the second work piece. The work pieces thereby can be separated, but the fastener remains in substantially permanent association with the first work piece for reuse of the work piece and the fastener.
