  • Patent number: 7336952
Abstract: A method and system for a handoff in a broadcast communication system is disclosed. A subscriber-assisted handoff is impractical in a broadcast communication system due to e.g., a high signaling load, a difficulty to synchronize the broadcast transmission. On the other hand, the small number of broadcast channels enables the subscriber station to perform the handoff autonomously. While performing a handoff between broadcast transmissions, a disruption of service occurs due to lack of synchronization among the broadcast transmissions. To reduce the service disruption, upon detecting a need for handoff, the lower layers inform the application layer about the forthcoming handoff. The application layer thus may take measures to reduce or prevent the disruption.

  • Patent number: 7236787
Abstract: When a network pages the temporary user mobile identifier of a mobile station, the mobile station sends a response to the network. Next, the network checks the authenticity of the user using a ciphering key, corresponding to the temporary user mobile identifier and a random number. If the temporary user mobile identifier is authenticated, a normal incoming call acceptance procedure is executed. If the mobile station is authenticated although the temporary user mobile identifier is wrong, the network reassigns a new temporary user mobile identifier to the mobile station and stops the current communication. In communication, the network and the mobile station mutually notify encipherment-onset time and negotiate about encipherment manner with each other. In addition, diversity handover is commenced upon a call attempt. Furthermore, if a branch replacement is necessary, the current branch is replaced by new branches capable of executing the diversity handover.

  • Patent number: 7218923
Abstract: A mechanism and method for controlling the rights and/or behavior of applications in a terminal, especially in a mobile terminal, are disclosed. At least some of the messages generated by an application residing in the terminal and destined for a communication network are diverted to an independent controlling entity also residing in the terminal. In the controlling entity, the messages are controlled before being transmitted to the network. Depending on the application and its behavior in the terminal, the control entity may modify the messages or even prevent their sending to the network. The modification may include inserting control data, such as a digest, which can be used to authenticate the application.

  • Patent number: 7215958
Abstract: The present invention relates to a relocation method, system and network element for changing a serving radio resource control entity After an initial operating state in which a user equipment (30) has radio links with a serving network element (20) and a drift network element (21) supporting said serving network element (20) with a wireless connection, the serving network element (20) transmits a relocation-specific information to a target network element (22). Based on the relocation-specific information, the target network element (22) establishes a link to the drift network element (21), such that the drift network element (21) can receive user traffic from both the serving network element (20) and the target network element (20). Then, the radio resource control is relocated to the target network element (20). The relocation-specific information may comprise an identifier or a list of identifiers of drift network elements.

  • Patent number: 7206611
Abstract: A method used in wireless communications for displaying an icon on a wireless communications device indicating that a calling party is a subscriber of a same wireless communications service provider of a called party. A terminating mobile station switching center (MSC) flags a routing number port associated with a routing number and returns the routing number to an originating MSC when it determines that a request for the routing number is sent from a home locator register (HLR) of the called party's wireless communications service provider and the calling party is also a subscriber of the called party's wireless communications service provider. When receiving an incoming call, the terminating MSC inspects whether the incoming call is to be sent through a flagged routing number port. If so, the terminating MSC generates a SETUP message with an instructions to display the icon.

  • Patent number: 7203524
Abstract: An article for personal, vehicular or household use provides a visual alert for the presence of a mobile communication signal from a nearby but not physically connected communication device. The article includes a signaling assembly for providing a visual signal when a mobile communication signal is detected within a defined distance an antenna connected to the signaling assembly and extending from it. The signaling assembly may include a circuit module with an LED providing a visible signal when an adjacent mobile communication device is transmitting a signal within the defined distance. The defined distance is selected so as to make the article responsive only to signals from a mobile device within a user's personal space.

  • Patent number: 7200390
Abstract: A mobile station update client facilitates downloading of updated software. This client interacts through a data communication client, using a standard interface. The data client wakes up the update client, in response to a notification from a download server. The update client interacts with the server, to identify resident software for checking against update(s) available from the server. The server does not need to be pre-provisioned with information as to the software or firmware in the mobile station, as this data can be provided by the update client. Also, there is no need for transmission of sensitive subscriber information over the air once a connection is established, because the download client provides the minimal data needed to facilitate the checking and updating of the software. An update is downloaded and stored in dedicated memory in the mobile station. The update client installs the updated software and activates that software for future use.

  • Patent number: 7200403
Abstract: In the case where a PDSCH is transmitted by only one specific base station and a DPCH is simultaneously transmitted by a plurality of base stations while controlling a transmitting power of the PDSCH according to the DPCH, an optimum value of a power ratio between the PDSCH and the DPCH according to a position of a mobile station is optimized, and the receiving quality of the PDSCH at a fixed level regardless of the position of the mobile station on the soft handover is maintained to be constant. In a specific base station, a value of a ratio between the transmitting power of the PDSCH and that of the DPCH that is a dedicated channel is controlled to be optimized according to the position of the mobile station on the soft handover so that it becomes the ratio determined based on a measured value of a received power of a shared channel or the dedicated channel of a soft handover base station in the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 7194257
Abstract: A wireless communications device comprises a transceiver, memory, and a controller. The transceiver permits a user to communicate with a remote party via a wireless communications network. Whenever the user places an outgoing call, the controller stores characteristics of the outgoing call in memory. These include the phone number of the remote party, the time of day and/or day-of-week the outgoing call was made, the location of the wireless communications device when placing the outgoing call, and the identity of a short-range transceiver with which the wireless communications device established a communications link when placing the outgoing call. Periodically, the controller analyzes the stored characteristics, and determines a call pattern for the remote party based on the users call history. Based on the determined call pattern, the controller is able to predict when the user will likely place a subsequent outgoing call to the remote party.

  • Patent number: 7184760
Abstract: Air interface management apparatus for use in network-based control of measurements made by mobile user equipment with respect to cells of the network is adapted to detect conflict in content of measurement control messages instructing the report of pathloss measurement values. Conflict is detected in particular where the message specifies: a) an identity for a triggering event for which the category or categories of cell to be measured is determined at the receiver solely by said identity and comprises detected set cells, or b) periodical measurement in respect of a detected set cell. Pathloss measurements are not possible in these cases. The apparatus provides a mechanism for dealing with detected conflict by blocking transmission of, or response to, a measurement control message giving rise to conflict. Alternatively, the message or the response may be modified to avoid the conflict.
