Abstract: A colloidal magnesium suspension is prepared by grinding 400 mesh pure magnesium (99.8+%) in dry kerosene until it reaches colloidal dimensions (from about 500 to 1 millimicron) and is thereafter added in critical low concentration of 1/10 grams as substantially pure magnesium up to about 6 grams per 10 gallons of diesel fuel whereby improved burning of the diesel fuel is observed as evidenced by improvement in mileage of up to 50% for the same motor settings as compared to the diesel fuel to which the colloidal magnesium has not been added. Optimum amounts of about 1/2 to 4 grams of colloidal magnesium in 10 gallons are preferred in order to minimize air pollution, while giving maximum benefit for fuel economy.

Abstract: A process for selective non-destructive catalytic hydrogenation of alkylstyrene such as .alpha.-methylstyrene in a mixed .alpha.-methylstyrene and cumene feed stream wherein the hydrogenation is conducted in the presence of a copper chromite catalyst. Preferably the hydrogenation is carried out at a pressure of between about 5 psia and about 300 psia. Use of this catalyst allows hydrogen streams containing up to about 30 per cent by volume carbon monoxide to be utilized.

Abstract: An improved liquid diesel fuel for diesel engines is made by incorporating at least 0.003% by weight of a mixture of an iron salt of an aromatic nitro acid and a nitroaliphatic compound having one to four carbon atoms, into the diesel fuel. The weight ratio of the aromatic nitro acid salt to the nitroaliphatic compound ranges from 1:10 to 1:100. The additive, when added to diesel fuel, (1) substantially eliminates hard carbon deposits from the valve and exhaust systems of diesel engines, thereby improving the efficiency of the engines and decreasing overhaul expense, (2) reduces air pollutants such as oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, and virtually eliminates carbon monoxide from diesel exhausts and (3) reduces or substantially eliminates slime deposits which form during diesel fuel storage.
Abstract: Monochloroalkanes are produced by reacting the corresponding alcohol with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a solution of zinc chloride. The mixture of alcohol and zinc chloride solution is saturated with gaseous hydrogen chloride and this mixture in a thin layer contacted with gaseous hydrogen chloride.
Abstract: The present invention encompasses compounds of the formula ##STR1## AND THE PHARMACEUTICALLY ACCEPTABLE ACID ADDITION SALTS THEREOF WHEREIN R represents hydrogen or hydroxymethyl. The compounds of the present invention are prepared by condensing N-carbobenzyloxyserine or 2-carbobenzyloxyamino-3-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethylpropionic acid with p- N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)!phenylenediamine hydrochloride and removing the carbobenzyloxy protecting group by catalytic hydrogenation. These compounds are useful as cytotoxic agents, in particular, antitumor agents.
Abstract: Prostaglandin analogs wherein the C-2 carboxy is replaced by an aminomethyl or (substituted amino)methyl are disclosed along with intermediates useful in their preparation and processes for their preparation. These analogs are useful for the same pharmacological purposes as the prostaglandins.
Abstract: Motor fuel compositions having detergent properties are disclosed and claimed which are particularly useful in spark-ignition, internal combustion engines. The fuel compositions of the present invention contain certain additives which either substantially eliminate, mitigate against, or maintain at a low level, deposits which would otherwise form in the carburetor, in the intake valves and ports, and in the combustion chamber, including the spark plugs. Such carburetor and intake system (induction system) deposits are to be avoided since they tend to restrict the flow of air through the carburetor especially at idle and at low speeds and/or cause improper valve closing and sluggish valve action. These conditions produce rough engine idling, stalling, and can also result in excessive hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide exhaust emissions. Combustion chamber deposits are to be avoided since they cause an increase in octane requirement, emissions and cause preignition.
Abstract: This disclosure describes a novel class of antibiotics, three of which have been designated AM31.alpha., AM31.beta., and AM31.gamma. and are produced in a microbiological fermentation under controlled conditions using a new strain of Streptoverticillium netropsis.

Abstract: Novel compositions, useful as additives for normally liquid fuels to impart dispersancy, anti-icing and rust inhibiting properties thereto, comprise salts of amines prepared by the Mannich reaction between a hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound, usually an alkylphenol in which the alkyl group contains at least about six carbon atoms; formaldehyde or a reversible polymer thereof; and a hydroxyalkyl-substituted amine such as diethanolamine. The acid portion of the salt is preferably derived from a carboxylic acid containing about 14-24 carbon atoms especially an aliphatic radical-substituted succinic acid or an acidic ester thereof. Epoxide adducts of such salts are useful for the same purposes.
