  • Patent number: 6957594
Abstract: In a starter, a cylindrical tube is slidablly engaged with an outer peripheral surface of an output shaft through a bearing in an axial direction. A front end of the tube, which supports a pinion, is closed to define an enclosed space between the front end of the tube and an end of the output shaft. A ventilation groove is formed on an inner cylindrical surface of the tube to communicate the enclosed space with a space defined rearward of the bearing. The ventilation groove has a helical shape twisted about an axis of the tube. When the bearing is press-fitted in the tube, a direction of press-fitting the tube and a direction along the ventilation groove do not coincide, but cross each other.

  • Patent number: 6958026
Abstract: An improved tooth profile for a roller chain sprocket enables noise reduction from impact and polygonal action during the meshing process. The profile of the engaging flank consists of three portions which are the seating, impact and distal portions all three of which are arcs with well-defined radii and arc centers. The profile of the disengaging flank is determined in accordance to a modified form of the JIS standard in which the sprocket pitch is smaller than the roller chain pitch. The impact point is located at the tangent point, thus permitting a gradual change of the roller velocity, thereby lessening the impact level and the effects of polygonal action.

  • Patent number: 6938508
Abstract: The invention provides for cooling an endless belt in a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is comprised of a drive clutch, a driven clutch, and an endless belt disposed about the drive and driven clutches. Both the drive and driven clutches include an axially stationary sheave and an axially movable sheave. A central hub extends from an inner surface of at least one of the sheaves, and further includes at least one bore. The one bore defines an air path extending from an outer face of the hub through the one sheave to the outer face of the one sheave. At least one recessed channel is located on an inner surface of at least one of the sheaves. The one recessed channel defines an air path around a side of the endless belt in contact with the inner face of the one sheave. The invention will cool the belt as it rides about the drive clutch and driven clutches. In addition, the invention will provide at least one reduced-slip sheave surface for the belt in the CVT.

  • Patent number: 6935987
Abstract: A wheeled vehicle incorporating a control methodology for regulating the power input and output of an inertial energy storage device, specifically a flywheel. The control methodology utilizes a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and comprises control of the CVT speed ratio based on feedback of the CVT output torque. The CVT ratio control signal is based on an error signal equal to the difference between operator input and CVT output torque. Operator input may be a positive or a negative value, a negative value corresponding to regenerative power. Operator input corresponds to required force or torque analogous to throttle opening or braking effort. This methodology continuously synchronizes the speeds of the inertial energy storage device and vehicle wheels, keeping frictional losses to a minimum.
