  • Patent number: 11085268
Abstract: A method of manufacturing an assembly for use as an isolation barrier to be run in and secured within a well. The assembly has a first tubular section providing a mandrel portion over which a sleeve body is located. The sleeve body is initially welded to a second tubular section to provide a part assembly which can be welded, inspected and machined without affecting the mandrel portion. The second tubular section is then coupled to the first tubular section and the sleeve body welded to the first tubular section to provide a chamber between the sections and the sleeve body. In use, fluid can enter the chamber through a port in the mandrel portion and morph the sleeve against a larger diameter surface in the well. In an embodiment the second tubular section includes a support for the sleeve body during initial welding which is then machined away.

  • Patent number: 11078783
Abstract: A caliper-behind casing apparatus and method determines a location and size of a washout (i.e., a void) behind casing in a borehole for a salt cavern used for storing hydrocarbons. The cavern and tubing in the casing are filled with brine. Gaseous nitrogen is used to fill an annulus between the tubing and the casing above and below a casing shoe to obtain image responses from operating a pulsed neutron logging tool in the tubing along the borehole. Analysis of burst ratios of near and far detectors on the pulsed neutron logging tool from these passes is used to detect and estimate a void or washout in the formation behind the casing.

  • Patent number: 11078761
Abstract: An apparatus and method according to which a perforating gun includes a volume fill body. The volume fill body is positioned in the space between a charge tube and a carrier tube. The fill body occupies at least part, and sometimes all, of the free volume space between the charge tube and carrier tube thereby reducing the free volume space. In certain downhole applications, large free volume space can lead to significant reductions in wellbore pressure, causing dynamic underbalance, which is undesirable. The presence of the volume fill body prevents, or at least reduces, dynamic underbalance and its effects. Also, the volume fill body aligns the charge tube with the carrier tube, further assisting perforation.

  • Patent number: 11060355
Abstract: An apparatus and method are used in conjunction with a system for performing horizontal directional drilling, the system including a drill string extending from a drill rig to a boring tool such that the boring tool is steerable based on a roll orientation. The system also includes an arrangement for generating steering commands for guiding the boring tool to a target position. Responsive at least in part to the steering commands, a display is configured to selectively indicate each of a rotate command, a push command and a spin command. A steering indicator is described which indicates a current roll orientation of the boring tool. A 3-D grid can be animated and centered on either a steering or target indicator.
