  • Patent number: 7085726
Abstract: A method includes determining a travel itinerary that includes a first segment that is scheduled to arrive at a location at an arrival time and a second segment that is scheduled to depart from the location at a departure time. The method also includes deriving a probability distribution of delays in the arrival time based on an arrival statistical model of the first segment, retrieving a minimum connection time required by a traveler traveling in the first segment to connect to the second segment, and computing a likelihood that the traveler will fail to connect to the second segment based on the probability distribution of delays in the arrival time. Annotations are derived from the computed likelihood and added to the travel itinerary.

  • Patent number: 6761799
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for use in connection with the combustion of black liquor. In the method the black liquor is concentrated in a multi-effect evaporation plant in order to obtain black liquor at a suitable dry-solids content for combustion and to generate vapor. The concentrated black liquor is taken to be combusted in a recovery boiler, into which combustion air is fed at several levels for the combustion process. It is a characteristic feature of the invention that the air fed to at least one air level is preheated by using vapor generated in the concentration of the black liquor as heat source.

  • Patent number: 6746569
Abstract: A nested rolled paper product is shown in which raised and depressed areas are formed in a sheet. The depressed areas may comprise square shapes, rounded shapes or other geometric shapes that are capable of aligning or nesting in registration when the sheet is rolled to form a reduced diameter rolled product. A high loft through air drying fabric is employed to imprint a high caliper pattern into the sheet in such a way as to nest raised portions, resulting in a more compact product having a minimized roll diameter. Grooves or channels in the sheet are capable of aligning as the sheet is rolled. The resulting rolled product may be toilet tissue, paper towels, or other similar paper products. The final rolled product achieves a minimum roll diameter for a fixed roll length.

  • Patent number: 6719879
Abstract: A method for obtaining particulate calcium carbonate having an average particle size less than about 12 microns is provided. The method includes the steps of (1) withdrawing from a pulp mill a mixture containing calcium carbonate; (2) treating the mixture to remove contaminants contained in the mixture to produce a treated mixture containing calcium carbonate and further having a chemical composition and/or purity which substantially inhibits the fusing together of calcium carbonate particulates; (3) recovering from the treated mixture particulate calcium carbonate having an average particle size less than about 12 microns. The calcium carbonate produced has a high surface area to volume ratio and is therefore highly reactive and suitable for numerous applications such as in the treatment of soil, filler paper production, paint production, and contaminant containment in coal stack emission assemblies.

  • Patent number: 6632327
Abstract: A water soluble, surface active, polymeric agent is mixed with digestion liquor, preferably with an additional surface active defoamer coagulant agent prior to or during acidification of the alkaline digestive liquor. This results in an easily separable, non-gelatinous, non-gummy, coagulated lignin as a solids, particulate fraction that tends to float on a clarified liquid fraction containing recoverable salts. The solids fraction and the liquid frictions are easily separated, one from the other, by a gravity separation step.

  • Patent number: 6585855
Abstract: A process for increasing the tactile properties of a base web without adversely effecting the strength of the web is disclosed. In one embodiment, the process includes the steps of placing a base web between a first moving conveyor and a second moving conveyor. The conveyors are then wrapped around a shear-inducing roll which creates shear forces that act upon the base web. The shear forces disrupt the web, increasing the softness and decreasing the stiffness of the web. The shear-inducing roll typically has a relatively small diameter. In some applications, more than one shear-inducing roll may be incorporated into the system. Base webs made according to the present invention have been found to have improved void-volume and fuzz-on-edge properties.

  • Patent number: RE38317
Abstract: Recycled fiber pulp from a vortex cleaning plant (e.g. connected to the short circulation of a paper machine) effects the recovery and return of fillers in the recycled fiber pulp discharged from the vortex cleaning plant, in an efficient and economical manner. The loss of filler in the recycled fiber pulp discharged from the vortex cleaning plant is decreased by treating a concentrated fraction of the rejects from the vortex cleaning plant with a mixer/disperser for dispersing the filler in the recycled fiber pulp, and returning as much usable filler as possible back to the process.
