  • Patent number: 8850529
Abstract: A service cooperation system is provided with a multi-function apparatus and a relay apparatus. The service cooperation system changes a disclosure condition of an album in which an electronic file is categorized and stored, for an electronic file storing service offered by the service provider. Without the need for a terminal apparatus such as a personal computer having a fulfilling web browser function, an image reading apparatus itself can perform uploading process, setting of an album of an upload destination and security setting/changing for an album, while notifying the user, who is authorized to a limited disclosure and to view the album, that the album has been updated.

  • Patent number: 8826043
Abstract: A storage device is configured to communicate with a host device over a Bluetooth connection. The storage device includes a flash memory, a processor, and a Bluetooth controller. The memory stores at least one permission for determining access to the memory. The processor manages access to the memory, independently of the host device, based on a comparison of a request at the removable storage device to access the memory to at least one permission. The comparison is independent, requiring no management by an operating system of the host device, such that if the at least one permission includes a particular access type that matches the access requested in the request, the processor provides access to the memory.

  • Patent number: 8793312
Abstract: Techniques are provided herein for obtaining network usage information about a plurality of users, analyzing the network usage information to detect a plurality of subjects and determine a set of relationship scores describing the strength of the relationship between users and subjects, and analyzing the sets of relationship scores to detect a plurality of virtual communities formed among the users. The virtual communities are used to detect subjects to recommend to members of the virtual communities, such as topics or content items that other users of the community have found of interest.

  • Patent number: 8707054
Abstract: A functional unit of a device is associated with a secret. Data stored in a memory location of the device is encrypted using the secret. The memory location of the device is accessible to other functional units; but without knowledge of the secret, the stored encrypted data is useless. The sharing of the secret creates a secure path between memory locations and functional units of the device while maintaining a unitary memory architecture. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.

  • Patent number: 8627098
Abstract: In a method for verifying firmware of an electronic device, the electronic device includes a baseboard management controller (BMC) for storing a BMC firmware, and a basic input-output system (BIOS) for storing a BIOS firmware. The method writes a first verification code into the BMC firmware, and writes a second verification code into the BIOS firmware. The method writes the BMC firmware into the BMC, and writes the BIOS firmware into the BIOS. The method further triggers the electronic device to power off if the first verification code of the BMC firmware is not identical to the second verification code of the BIOS firmware, and boots an operating system of the electronic device if the first verification code of the BMC firmware is identical to the second verification code of the BIOS firmware.

  • Patent number: 8560849
Abstract: A system and method for secure communication is provided. A first hash-based message authentication code is generated from a shared secret and a first counter value stored in storage of a computing device. A second hash-based message authentication code is generated from such shared secret and a second counter value. An encryption key is derived from a function of the first hash-based message authentication code and the second hash-based message authentication code. A message is encrypted using the encryption key, and communicated via a network interface of the computing device.
