Abstract: An illuminated exit sign having a novel layered arrangement including a multiplicity of miniature incandescent light bulbs. The light bulbs are mounted on a lamp assembly board in such a manner as to spell out the word "EXIT." A plastic sheet having holes therein is laid over the lamp assembly board, each of the bulbs entering a hole in the sheet. A stencil-type mask on top of the sheet defines the work "EXIT." When power is supplied, the bulbs provide direct illumination to the observer, and also diffuse light throughout the plastic sheet, providing background illumination of the lettering, with improved field of vision.
