Patent number: 6751327Abstract: A battery assembly is constructed of an elongated plastic shell irregularly shaped to fit optimally in anatomical cavities, particularly ear canals. The battery assembly relies structurally on a thin plastic shell which is designed to be inexpensively formed in a variety of complex shapes, thus offering superior volumetric utilization and energy capacity when compared with conventional metal button cell designs. In preferred embodiments, the shell is domed to distribute axial stresses so that it can be thin and still provide sufficient strength to avoid breakage in an extended wear environment despite its plastic composition. A preferred embodiment of a hearing device incorporating the battery assembly is disposable, to be discarded upon depletion of the electrical energy of the battery assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2000Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Insonus Medical, Inc.Inventors: Richard C. Urso, Loren L. Roy, Adnan Shennib, Patrick V. Williams, James P. Buckley

Patent number: 6748090Abstract: The invention relates to a system with multi-mode radiator panels used to reproduce sound. The multi-mode radiator panels include at least one driver, a core layer and two cover layers connected to the core layer. The panels are typically mounted in a frame with attachments providing a connection between the frame and the unit formed of the core layer and the cover layers. To protect the system against overload and damage, the entire driver electronics is housed in a hermetically sealed air space located between the frame, the core layer and the attachments. The driver electronics includes a power amplifier powered by low-voltage power supply. The voltage supply may be buffered by a battery to keep the average power supplied to the electronics small, while still being able to reproduce infrequently occurring peak power events.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1999Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Harman Audio Electronic Systems GmbHInventors: Wolfgang Bachmann, Gerhard Krump, Hans-Juergen Regl

Patent number: 6704424Abstract: A low battery detection circuit is disclosed for detecting low battery voltages in hearing aids and other battery operated devices. The low battery detection circuit operates reliably on a small amount of current, which does not significantly increase overall battery drain. An output signal is generated whose amplitude and frequency increase as battery voltage decreases below a predetermined level. The circuit's minimal number of components and output signal characteristics make it particularly applicable as a low battery early warning device for hearing aid devices.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2002Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: Etymotic Research, Inc.Inventor: Mead C. Patent number: 6654476Abstract: A loudspeaker has a diaphragm with a voice coil disposed about its perimeter and extending in a gap into which the flux of an annular rare earth magnet is focused. An opening behind the diaphragm communicates through the speaker frame. The voice coil may have two or more windings that are connected in parallel, and may, e.g., be layered on top of one another, so that the impedance of the coil, as well as its depth in the front/back direction of motion, are low. The voice coil is preferably implemented using a polyimide form or bobbin, which has patterned lead-in conductors embedded therein to bring power to wire windings on the perimeter of the coil. The lead-in conductors extend to, or through, the central opening of a ring magnet, providing a robust ribbon input connection. The ribbon lead-in may be symmetrical, and the central opening further provides an air channel that couples to an auxiliary chamber for enhanced sound.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2000Date of Patent: November 25, 2003Inventor: Godehard A.
