  • Patent number: 6501995
Abstract: A control system has blocks or other components that facilitate validation of their own replacements, e.g., downloaded via e-commerce transactions. The system includes first and second process control components. The first component is coupled to a third process control component, with which it transfers information, e.g., as part of an active or ongoing control process. The second component can be, for example, an update or other potential replacement for the first component. The first and/or second components can effect substitution of the second component for the first. More particularly, they can effect coupling of the second component for information transfer with the third component and decoupling of the first component from such transfer with the third component. Preferably, such coupling and decoupling occur while the process control system remains active.

  • Patent number: 6498955
Abstract: A system is disclosed that enables intelligent environments comprised of physical spaces that sense and respond to the people and events taking place in them to dynamically influence environmental factors that affect them, such as the lighting, temperature, décor or background music. An intelligent environment in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention controls the selection of music played in a fitness center. Two different algorithms are utilized to arbitrate preferences in a shared environment: one seeks to maximize the average satisfaction of the inhabitants, the other seeks to maximize the equitable distribution of satisfaction among the inhabitants. The resultant system is an approach that affords effective environmental control.

  • Patent number: 6493596
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a non-linear mill. A linear controller is provided having a linear gain k that is operable to receive inputs representing measured variables of the plant and predict on an output of the linear controller predicted control values for manipulatible variables that control the plant. A non-linear model of the plant is provided for storing a representation of the plant over a trained region of the operating input space and having a steady-state gain K associated therewith. The gain k of the linear model is adjusted with the gain K of the non-linear model in accordance with a predetermined relationship as the measured variables change the operating region of the input space at which the linear controller is predicting the values for the manipulatible variables. The predicted manipulatible variables are then output after the step of adjusting the gain k.

  • Patent number: 6493608
Abstract: A surgical method and a control system is provided. The surgical method and the control system can advantageously be used in a minimally invasive surgical apparatus. The method includes generating a desired surgical instrument movement command signal. It further includes comparing the desired surgical instrument movement command signal with at least one preset surgical instrument movement limitation. Should the desired surgical instrument command signal transgress the preset surgical instrument movement limitation, the desired surgical instrument movement command signal is restricted to yield a restricted surgical instrument movement command signal. A surgical instrument is then caused to move in response to the restricted surgical instrument movement command signal. The method further provides for haptic feedback on a master control in response to restriction of the desired surgical instrument movement command signal.

  • Patent number: 6418354
Abstract: The width of bands to be laminated on a mill train is adjusted by vertical upsetting rollers, resulting, however, in a narrowing at the band ends due to the asymetric material flow there. In order to solve the problem, the upsetting rollers are so designed as to move at the passage of the band ends in keeping with a curve defined according to specified parameters. The parameters are based on neuro-computer made predictions related to the milling process.

  • Patent number: 6418350
Abstract: A method for scheduling the allocation of resources in a semiconductor object processing tool. The method comprises identifying a conflict in a resource allocation schedule for the processing of a plurality of semiconductor objects through the tool over time. The schedule utilizes a fundamental period for scheduling the periodic introduction of the objects into the tool for processing. A conflict arising when a transport mechanism adapted to move the objects to and from the resources in the tool is scheduled to execute more than one transport action in a given time interval. The time blocks associated with the conflict are rescheduled from a present time interval to a different time interval such that the rescheduling of the time block does not violate a post-processing residency constraint for a residency time that the object spends in the resource whose time block is rescheduled.

  • Patent number: 6415193
Abstract: A universal recipe editor is for off-line viewing and editing of semiconductor-manufacturing recipes. The universal recipe editor can read recipes from a wide variety of semiconductor-manufacturing machines from different manufacturers using recipe distributed object model (R-DOM) files. An R-DOM file is generated for each kind of recipe-file format to locate process parameters within proprietary recipe-file formats. The sequence of parameters in the R-DOM file matches the sequence in the recipe data file so that parameters may be mapped from recipe data files for display and editing. ASCII or binary recipe file formats are mapped from the recipe data file using R-DOM objects. Revision and authoring information is kept in a recipe information file for each recipe. Each line of the recipe data file can specify a different process parameter. Security or access rights for each parameter is added for each parameter by including security codes on each line in the R-DOM file.

  • Patent number: 6415205
Abstract: A multiple sensing technology-based occupancy sensor. Ultrasonic and infrared sensors are used to produce first and second occupancy estimator signals that are combined using a fusion based detection algorithm to produce a combined estimator signal. The combined estimator is then used to switch electrical loads when the combined estimator signal is above a predetermined threshold. The result is an occupancy sensor that has a very high probability of occupancy detection and a low probability of false tripping.

  • Patent number: 6377866
Abstract: A device operable to apply an identification mark to a semiconductor wafer and inspect the applied mark immediately after its application. Engraving information and wafer thickness data are suppled to an engraving device and the engraving operation applies the mark to the wafer accordingly. A camera then reads the applied mark as read information and a comparator compares the read information to the engraving information and an error is determined in an information processing device. In order to maintain efficient operation of the mark application process, the error determined in the information processing device is then used to control the engraving device as it applies identification marks.

  • Patent number: 6339732
Abstract: A computerized medication dispensing station that addresses anesthesia medication management and tracking problems is disclosed. Medications, including narcotic and non-narcotic, and supplies for use in anesthesia, are stored in secured, semi-secured, and unsecured containers of a mobile station.
