The transistor includes a semiconductor film extending in the first direction to overlap with the first scanning line in a layer between the first scanning line and the pixel electrode. In a layer between a gate electrode and a pixel electrode, a second scanning line having a light shielding property extends in the first direction to overlap with the first scanning line in plan view. The second scanning line extends through a position spaced apart from a third contact portion that electrically couples the pixel electrode and the semiconductor film, and is electrically coupled to the gate electrode and the first scanning line.

    Abstract: Various embodiments set forth liquid crystal (LC) patterning control systems in which LCs are aligned using locally applied magnetic fields. The index of refraction experienced by light propagating through an anisotropic LC is dependent on orientation. As a result, a phase difference may be imparted to an optical beam that is passed through, or reflected from, an array of LCs whose orientations are controlled via locally applied magnetic fields. In some embodiments, the locally applied magnetic fields may be generated by driving currents through wires that intersect at micro or nanomagnetic particles or at magnetic domains, or by applying voltages to micro or nanocoils wrapped around high-permeability cores, among other things.

A semiconductor device according to the present invention has a structure in which: a liquid crystal layer is provided between a pair of substrates; one of the substrates is provided with a pixel electrode and a driver circuit; the other of the substrates is a counter substrate which is provided with two counter electrode layers in different potentials; and one of the counter electrode layers overlaps with the pixel electrode with the liquid crystal layer therebetween and the other of the counter electrode layers overlaps with the driver circuit with the liquid crystal layer therebetween. An oxide semiconductor layer is used for the driver circuit.

    Abstract: In a liquid crystal apparatus, a liquid crystal is provided in a cavity surrounded by a seal material between a first substrate and a second substrate, and the liquid crystal is aligned in a diagonal direction formed by corners 10a1, 10a3. Between a pixel area and the seal material, a first groove is formed along a side 20a6 from the corner 10a1 toward a corner 10a2. When a first pump is driven, the liquid crystal of the pixel area is drawn from a first end of the first groove on the corner 10a1 side, and the liquid crystal is ejected from a second end into the pixel area. As a result, a liquid crystal flow from the side of a side 20a7 toward the side of a side 20a9 occurs in the pixel area, and thus the liquid crystal can be smoothly circulated.

In the “off” state, the polarization grating angularly deviates and polarizes a portion of received incident light passing therethrough. In the “on” state, crystals of the polarization grating align with the incident light, allowing it to pass therethrough unimpeded and unpolarized. The beam splitter includes a plurality of sub-aperture mirrors which are spaced at randomly varying distances from one another, the mirrors being configured to reflect a portion of the incident light.
