  • Patent number: 5469873
Abstract: A device 2, 102 for streaking hair by use of a streaking dye includes a base plate 4, 104 which can be placed against a person's head to serve as a support for a hair-"passee" 24 to be treated. The device 2, 102 further includes a perforation-pattern plate 10, 106 which can be laid on the base plate 4, 104 and thereby on the hair-"passee" 24. Perforation-pattern plate 10, 106 has a finished pattern of arbitrary geometry and on which the streaking dye can be deposited. The base plate 4, 104 and the perforation-pattern plate 10, 106 are approximately rectangular, each comprising a respective concave side 12, 120 and 14, 124 configured to be placed against the head. The base plate 104 and the perforation-pattern designed as an intermediate plate 106 are connected to each other by a film hinge 112. At its side 114 opposite the base plate, the intermediate plate 106 is connected by a further film hinge 116 to a cover plate 108.

  • Patent number: 5465740
Abstract: A nail file apparatus is provided which consists of a housing with a handle extending from a rear portion of the housing. A nail file has a tip portion, a heel portion and ridges therebetween. A mechanism within said housing is for causing a reciprocating movement. A structure is for coupling the heel portion of the nail file to the reciprocating movement mechanism at a front portion of the housing. A person can grip the handle and activate the reciprocating movement mechanism, to operate the nail file extending therefrom. The ridges will automatically smooth, polish and shape the fingernails.

  • Patent number: 5460191
Abstract: A device for straightening and drying hair uses two facing rotating belts, to which rows of brushes are attached. Air is used at the same time for hair drying. The two belts are moved by two pinions at the same speed but in opposed directions, so that the facing parts of the two belts slide parallely and in the same direction. The rows of brushes have different spacing so that between the facing parts of the upper and lower belts, some brushes are aligned and others are not.

  • Patent number: 5460190
Abstract: A hair curler is disclosed which comprises a pretensioned helical spring covered by a foam rubber sleeve. A clamp is attached to one end of the curler which allows the hair to be curled around the body of the curler and the curler bent in a ring shape and retained in this shape by fixing the clamp to the curler body. The curler is heated by inserting a heating element in the center core of the curler. An alternative embodiment comprises a helical spring embedded in a hollow cylinder of a flexible material. The cylinder has a foam rubber sleeve and a clamp fixed to one end.

  • Patent number: 5456270
Abstract: A hairstyling device and method include forming a hollow tubular member that is semi-rigid but that includes opposed first and second circumferential cuts to accommodate flexing of the device. Midpoints of the first circumferential cuts are diametrically opposed to midpoints of the second circumferential cuts. Connecting mechanisms, such as fastening devices or materials, a handkerchief or a scarf, may be used to secure the device in an arcuate configuration, so as to achieve a desired hairstyle. In operation, the device is rolled through a person's hair to wrap the hair about the exterior of the tubular member. Preferably, hook material or the like is formed on the outside of the device to facilitate the wrapping of the hair. Then, the device is bent into the desired shape and is secured in place.

  • Patent number: 5456272
Abstract: A hair braiding device having a plurality of arms spaced in a tapered manner with the widest space at the arm's distal ends, the inner arms being of a substantially one piece V-shaped construction having connecting means at the distal ends and the outer arms having distal portions bent obliquely away from the outer arm linear shank portions which have perimeters which expand into parallel, oppositely disposed ear portions containing centrally disposed, aligned holes to be pivotally connected to inner arm apex holes with pins having coiled springs attached where the spring's free ends are secured by the outer surface of the inner arm apex and the inner surface of outer arm handles which are proximal extensions of the outer arm ear portions, so that pressure on the handles opens the arms to receive hair strands and release of the pressure causes the arms to close and clamp the hair strands so a hair braider is able to tighten a braided portion by pressing the hair braiding device against the braid and the hair

  • Patent number: 5454385
Abstract: An apparatus for maintaining hair in a braid is describe which includes of an elongate body having a top surface, a first end and a second end. A comb is transversely positioned at the first end. A plurality of pegs extend upwardly from the top surface of the body. The pegs are spaced at intervals between the first end and the second end to define a plurality of hair receiving spaces. Strands of hair are interwoven by being laid in a zig-zag fashion into the spaces between the pegs. The interwoven hair is secured to the top surface at the second end of the elongate body, thereby preventing the interwoven strands of hair from unravelling. Decorative caps can be placed on the pegs to maintain the strands of hair in the hair receiving spaces and for decorative purposes.

  • Patent number: 5449008
Abstract: A foldable hair clasp containing a mid section and two end sections, the end sections are removably and respectively connected to two ends of the mid section. A pair of hinge members are provided for connecting between the mid section and each of the end sections, respectively. Each of the hinge members comprises a hinge with two hinge plates. A pair of protrusions are provided on the mid section and each of the end sections, respectively. The protrusion has a sloping height tapered from the outer edge of the mid or end section and finally leveled with the inner surface of the mid or end section. The protrusion is also provided with an inner slot for receiving one of the hinge plates so as to allow the end sections to be folded inwardly and rest against the inside of the mid section to therefore reduce the size of the hair clasp.

  • Patent number: 5449007
Abstract: A hair comb includes moveable gripping elements for securing the hair comb in place in the user's hair. The hair comb comprises a main body including a plurality of teeth. A selected number of teeth include a longitudinal channel which is open along one side of the tooth. A gripping member including one or more gripping teeth is movably mounted in the main body. The gripping member is moveable from an inoperative position in which the gripping teeth are disposed within the longitudinal channels of respective teeth of the main body and a clamping position in which the gripping teeth extend outwardly from the longitudinal channels to clamp the user's hair between the gripping teeth and the adjacent teeth. A resilient member urges the gripping member to the retracted position. A latch releasably locks the gripping member in a clamping position. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the latch is operative to lock the gripping members in a plurality of different positions.

  • Patent number: 5433225
Abstract: A set of instruments for use in coloring selected groups of hair strands and a method of coloring hair using them. The instruments include a palette, a color board and a color blade. A layer of viscous hair coloring agent is placed on the color palette. A sheet of aluminum foil or the like is placed over the color board and folded over a beveled end of the color board. A group of hair strands to be colored is selected and placed on the a covered color board, with the beveled edge in contact with the scalp over a narrow line. A selected quantity of coloring agent is picked up by the color blade as a thin bead along the blade edge and brought into contact with the hair on the color board. The blade is moved along the hair to uniformly contact the hair with the coloring agent. The foil is then wrapped around the group of hair strands. Additional groups of hair strands can then be colored with the same or a different color. Preferably, the color blade has a flexible blade portion and a more rigid handle portion.
