  • Patent number: 6935635
Abstract: A multi-layer metal gasket includes at least on active layer and at least one shim layer having aligned combustion holes. The shim layer has annular portions surrounding the combustion holes and tab portions projecting radially outwardly from the annular portions surrounding the combustion holes. The annular portions underlie associated sealing beads of the active layer. The tab portions each have a radially extending neck region and a set of lateral bend tabs supported at the end of the neck region and projecting laterally outwardly thereof. The bend tabs project through an associated set of laterally spaced mounting windows formed in the active layer and are bent back toward one another to secure the shim layer to the active layer.

  • Patent number: 6932347
Abstract: An arrangement for a non-hermetic seal between a stator and a rotor of a turbomachine in the root region of guide blades belonging to the stator. The arrangement includes a brush sealing ring which is mounted on the guide blades via a spoke centering means and whose bristles together with a rotating sealing surface form a fluid barrier which is permeable in a defined manner. On the sealing side of lower pressure, a supporting ring for the bristles is arranged at a slight distance from the rotating sealing surface, and this supporting ring is integrally connected to the guide blade roots and can be segmented by parting seams. The spoke centering means is permeable to pressure, as a result of which the brush sealing ring is pressure-relieved axially, with the exception of the bristle area between the sealing surface and supporting ring.

  • Patent number: 6921088
Abstract: A PTFE seal and method of fabrication therefor includes preparing a mixture of PTFE resin powder and a susceptor material which is then compacted and sintered by exciting the susceptor material with microwave energy. Preferably, the compaction and sintering of the mixture is carried out in a continuous process and a vacuum is drawn on the mixture in the heating zone to extract any air from the mixture. The sintered mixture is advanced, preferably continuously, to a cutting zone where PTFE wafers are cut from the sintered mixture, preferably while the mixture is still warm.

  • Patent number: 6921087
Abstract: A cap has a plug portion, a seal plug and a sleeve. At the plug portion a side and a cylindrical wall project from a top board. An inner circumferential surface of the side wall fits on an outer circumferential surface of an opening portion of a vessel and covers the opening portion with the top board. The cylindrical wall forms a receiving chamber having an opening mouth at its under end face. The seal plug seals the opening mouth. The sleeve is loosely fitted on the cylindrical wall and opens the opening mouth by separating the seal plug from the cylindrical wall at relative movement of the cap. A sepal portion on the outer circumference of the sleeve is larger than inner diameter of the opening portion at its outer diameter and has flexibility to pass the inner diameter bending so as to avoid backward moving.

  • Patent number: 6916021
Abstract: The present invention relates to a sealing arrangement which is formed between a rotating assembly (4, 6) and a static assembly (3, 14, 15). In this sealing arrangement, the rotating assembly (4, 6, 16) has at least one cutting element (1) which engages in a counterpart surface on the static component. The present sealing arrangement is distinguished by the fact that the cutting element (1) is designed as a chipping device with a geometrically determined cutting edge with respect to the counterpart surface (2) or forms a chipping device of this type when the rotating assembly is rotating. The proposed sealing arrangement reduces the wear to the cutting element even in the event of adverse rotation or temperature conditions.

  • Patent number: 6899340
Abstract: An MLS cylinder head gasket includes a relatively thick intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The stopper beads limit compression of the sealing beads, which surround combustion cylinder bore apertures. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.

  • Patent number: 6866271
Abstract: A sealing device for use with a drive shaft of a water vessel. The sealing device comprises a housing for a seal and bearing, a compression ring, a lip seal flange attachment and a diaphragm for tracking the movement of the shaft. The diaphragm is made of a resilient, flexible material and is operatively connected to the seal housing. In operation, the diaphragm tracks the motion of the drive shaft so that the drive shaft may move freely in the hull of the vessel. The diaphragm allows the rigid seal housing to also move in response to any axial, lateral or circular-axial (wobble-like) movement of the shaft so that a constant seal around the shaft is provided.
