  • Patent number: 8025691
Abstract: A stent introducer apparatus includes a handle having a housing and a rotatable reel. An inner stent carrier having a proximal end and a distal end is provided, with the proximal end being connected to the housing of the handle. An outer sheath movably disposed about the inner stent carrier and having a proximal end and a distal end is provided, with the proximal end being connected to the reel of the handle. Rotation of the reel relative to the housing peels the outer sheath away from the inner stent carrier so as to move the outer sheath proximally relative to the inner stent carrier, thereby exposing the distal end of the inner stent carrier. The inner stent carrier has a stent carrying portion at its distal end to carry a stent that is deployed when the distal end of the inner stent carrier is exposed.

Abstract: A surgical clip includes a U-shaped configuration with first and second arms, and a bridge portion therebetween. The first arm is provided with a tip preferably having a catch, and the second arm extends into a deformable retainer having a tissue-piercing end and preferably also a hook. During application, tissue is clamped, and the clip is forced over the clamped tissue and the retainer of the second arm is bent and may be pierced through the tissue. The retainer is toward and around or adjacent the tip of the first arm preferably until the hook is engaged about the catch to secure the clip to the tissue and prevent the clip and tissue from separating. The clip is provided with structure that facilitates the stacking of a plurality of clips in a clip chamber of a clip applier.

  • Patent number: 7766952
Abstract: A delivery and deployment system for a self-expanding stent comprises a proximal handle having a rotatable thumbscrew and a sliding component which is attached to a distal stent restraining sheath. A rigid open coil spring is provided for converting rotation of the thumbscrew into translation of the sliding component). The spring is attached to the thumbscrew. The sliding component is located between adjacent coils of the spring. Rotation of the thumbscrew twists the spring and slowly slides the sliding component and hence the distal sheath in the proximal direction to uncover the stent, removing the constraint on the stent which is accurately deployed at the site of interest. The handle has a guide elongate channel which constrains the sliding component so that it cannot move in a rotational direction.

  • Patent number: 7727256
Abstract: The surgical instrument includes a shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion; an operative device is disposed on the distal end portion. A hand mechanism has a first handle and a second handle and is disposed on the proximal end portion. Movement of the second handle relative to the first handle actuates the operative device. A ratchet, attached to the second handle, locks the operative device and moves with the second handle. The ratchet is pivotally attached to the second handle and pivots between a locked position and an unlocked position. A biasing device biases the ratchet toward the locked position and a release mechanism for moves the ratchet from the locked position. At least one of the release mechanism and the ratchet has a feature permitting relative movement between the release mechanism and the ratchet.

  • Patent number: 7717949
Abstract: A covered self-expanding stent (114, 130, 132) with a length of 200 mm or more can be restrained against axial movement with a pusher (40) within the lumen of the stent that carries a spiral of wire (48) that provides protrusions that are accommodated within a luminal covering layer (24) radially inside the stent body. The protrusions distribute the stress over the full length of the stent. The pusher can be removed from the stent lumen by “unscrewing” the spiral relative to the covering layer (24). When the stent expands, the pusher can be withdrawn proximally, out of the stent lumen, without any need for rotatory movement. The covered stent can utilize a variety of stenting rings (110-118) along its length that manifest different mechanical properties so that the implant can exhibit mechanical properties that vary over its length, to suit the specific body and stenting site to which it is to be introduced.

  • Patent number: 7708758
Abstract: The surgical instrument includes a distal tool, an elongated shaft that supports the distal tool, and a proximal handle or control member, where the tool and the handle are coupled to the respective distal and proximal ends of the elongated shaft via distal and proximal bendable motion members. Actuation means extends between said distal and proximal members whereby any deflection of said control handle with respect to said elongated instrument shaft causes a corresponding bending of said distal motion member for control of said working member. The proximal bendable member comprises a ball and socket assembly supported between the handle and instrument shaft and constructed and arranged for three dimensional motion.
