Patent number: 6351268Abstract: Three dimensional images are generated from a conventional television broadcast signal to which has been added a low bandwidth depth information component. An array of microlenses is placed before the display screen and the microlens array is illuminated with an array of light sources having a periodicity that differs from the periodicity (pitch) of the microlens array. The difference of periodicity between the microlens array and the light sources is a function of the desired depth perception for the object being displayed. For the application to conventional Cathode Ray Tubes, we introduce a tilted opening in the focal plane of the microlens to allow (in a flexible and analog way) any periodicity variation of the lens light source. For the application to Liquid Crystal Displays, we split each pixel in a number of vertical stripes, and a set of stripes is driven in common by a horizontal line driver.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1999Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: Rose Research, L.L.C.Inventor: Jan Genoe

Patent number: 6333750Abstract: A video graphics system wherein a large quantity of video data is independently and selectively made available to plural video display devices. The large quantity of video data can be contributed to by plural sources of video data of differing formats. Further, the display devices can also be of varying types, each requiring a different input data format. A multi-sourced video distribution element, also referred to as a hub, serves as an interface between one or more sources of video display data and one or more video display devices. One source of data can be identified as a base image, and other sources of data can be utilized for overlay images integrated into the base image. The base image and any integrated overlay images are provided on a pixel bus internal to the hub. The hub can then be configured as an interface to one or more types of video display devices and/or to another hub.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1998Date of Patent: December 25, 2001Assignee: Cybex Computer Products CorporationInventors: Victor Odryna, Robert L. Patent number: 6331841Abstract: An image display system for viewing an electronic image and an external sight simultaneously, which includes image display units which have an individual controller for outputting image signals to a display unit. The display unit enables a switching operation with a predetermined operation mode from a plurality of operation modes, including a mode for indicating the image signals output from the individual controller. An external control device outputs mode control signals which address the operation mode of the display unit and are received by an external control terminal. A mode exchanging switch specifies a condition of the mode control signal. A detection unit detects whether the external control terminal is connected to a connector capable of outputting a mode control signal. The individual controllers are connected to the external control terminals in turn so as to couple the controllers to the external control device in series.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2000Date of Patent: December 18, 2001Assignee: Olympus Optical Company Ltd.Inventors: Yuki Tokuhashi, Naoto Shimada

Patent number: 6326940Abstract: A ferroelectric liquid crystal display includes a cell comprising a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material contained between two transparent glass substrates having alignment layers for determining the surface alignment of the molecules in the liquid crystal material. The display further incorporates switching circuitry for switching the molecules in the liquid crystal material between a first state and a second state by means of a switching signal having a duration &tgr; and a voltage V. The liquid crystal material and the alignment layers are such that the cell exhibits a &tgr;-V response in the form of a curve having two minima separated by an intermediate maximum. Such a &tgr;-V response, which may be termed a double turnaround response, allows a high degree of discrimination between the switched and non-switched states beyond the turnaround point and offers potential addressing advantages.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1999Date of Patent: December 4, 2001Assignee: Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Karl Philip Lymer, John Clifford Jones

Patent number: 6313814Abstract: For image data of each display cell, correction is performed with data from a correction memory and stored in an image memory. A sequencer sends a signal regarding a display pulse within one frame to a sequence counter, which the sequence counter counts. A value corresponding to the count value is read out from a look up table, and a comparator compares the image data for one display cell from the image memory with a value (number of discharges or value corresponding to brightness) regarding the display pulse converted from the lookup table. When the value from the lookup table reaches the value of the image data, the display data is changed so as to control the state of discharge (such as to stop the discharge). The number of discharges corresponding to the image data is controlled by the contents of the lookup table so that the brightness can be controlled and correction is easily performed.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1999Date of Patent: November 6, 2001Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hironobu Arimoto, Atsushi Ito
