Patent number: 7048046Abstract: Preferred embodiments of the present invention provide a submersible pumping system for pumping wellbore fluids. The submersible pumping system includes a rotatable shaft and a mechanical seal that substantially surrounds the shaft. The mechanical seal prevents the flow of wellbore fluid along the shaft and includes a spring, a spring retainer and a runner. The spring surrounds the shaft and provides an axial force along the shaft. The spring retainer is affixed to the shaft and includes a detent to hold the spring. The runner is in interlocking engagement with the spring retainer and accommodates the spring. The interlocking engagement causes the runner to rotate within the spring retainer while permitting axial movement of the shaft relative to the runner.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2003Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Wood Group ESP, Inc.Inventor: Stephen M. Patent number: 7048051Abstract: A process and system for recovering hydrocarbonaceous products from in situ oil shale formations. A hole is drilled in the oil shale formation and a processing gas inlet conduit is positioned within the hole. A processing gas is pressurized, heated, and introduced through the processing gas inlet conduit and into the hole. The processing gas creates a nonburning thermal energy front within the oil shale formation so as to convert kerogen in the oil shale to hydrocarbonaceous products. The products are withdrawn with the processing gas through an effluent gas conduit positioned around the opening of the hole, and are then transferred to a condenser wherein a liquid fraction of the products is formed and separated from a gaseous fraction.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2003Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Gen Syn FuelsInventor: Ronald E. Patent number: 6988554Abstract: A choke actuator having an integrated choke control system enabling fast closure and opening of the choke. The choke control system includes integral electronics to receive signals from a surface or subsea control module and control directional control valves to regulate the flow of hydraulic fluid from a local hydraulic supply to the choke actuator. Response times for choke actuation are greatly reduced by locating the electronic control system and directional control valves in an integrated package with the choke actuator and providing a local hydraulic supply. Additional embodiments may also include other electronic sensing and instrumentation enabling the choke control system to monitor and adjust the choke to maintain selected flow characteristics or in accordance with a predetermined production scheme. Any or all of the components of the choke, the choke control system, or the choke actuator may also be retrievable separately from the other components so as to allow maintenance and replacement.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: January 24, 2006Assignee: Cooper Cameron CorporationInventors: John Eric Bodine, David Anthony James, Declan Elliott

Patent number: 6962214Abstract: A rotary valve assembly for a rotary steerable tool is disclosed for directing flow of an abrasive laden drilling fluid; the valve assembly has a first sealing surface rotatably engaging a second sealing surface. At least one of the surfaces has at least about 5% of its area comprising interconnecting voids to an average depth of at least 0.02 mm. The interconnected voids allow fluid pressure to equalize between the sealing faces by flowing through the interconnecting voids to the sealing surfaces. Because the fit of the sealing surfaces of the valve is less than perfect, and because the voids on mating surfaces do not necessarily overlap, the 5% of the surface area comprising interconnected voids can easily translate to a 10% or more reduction in sealed area when both sealing surfaces have the interconnecting voids. The additional reduction in surface area subjected to differential pressure has substantially eliminated the hydraulic lock problem previously encountered upon startup.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2001Date of Patent: November 8, 2005Assignee: Schlumberger WCP Ltd.Inventors: Peter Raymond Hughes, Nigel Dennis Griffin, Mark A.
