The process comprises reacting an activated dihalobenzenoid compound with a diphenol and/or in self-condensing a halophenol whose halogen atom is activated towards nucleophilic substitution reactions. The polymerizations are performed at high temperatures, in an aprotic solvent, and in the presence of a base. The base comprises sodium carbonate or bicarbonate and a potassium, rubidium or cesium salt of an organic acid.
