    Abstract: An adaptive fluid switch for regulating the production rate of a fluid. The adaptive fluid switch includes a fluid control module having a fluid selector, a swirl chamber and a self-impinging valve element. When the fluid produced through the adaptive fluid switch has a viscosity greater than a first predetermined level, the fluid selector determines the fluid to be a selected fluid such that the fluid swirls in one direction in the swirl chamber and follows a low resistance flow path in the valve element. When the fluid has a viscosity less than a second predetermined level, the fluid selector determines the fluid to be a non-selected fluid such that the fluid swirls in the opposite direction in the swirl chamber and follows a high resistance flow path in the valve element, thereby regulating the production rate of the fluid responsive to changes in the viscosity of the fluid.

    Abstract: An apparatus for providing a nonlabor-intensive process for sealing an opening formed in the ground with a chemically-inflatable bag is provided. The chemically-inflatable bag contains two or more chemical reactants, one of which is a liquid reactant that is initially stored in a liquid-containing device. The liquid-containing device has a removable cap, which upon removal or breakage of the cap permits the liquid reacting agent to contact and react with another reacting agent. The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide, which expands the chemically-inflatable bag from a collapsed condition to an inflated condition. In the inflated condition, the chemically-inflatable bag fills and protects the integrity of the formed cavity.

    Abstract: A method and system of producing fluid from a well with a gas lift system that includes a virtual plunger made from a plunger forming material. The virtual plunger is formed downhole by injecting the plunger forming material directly into a column of liquid inside production tubing and from an annulus that circumscribes the production tubing. The flow of plunger forming material into the production tubing is controlled by an injection valve intersecting a sidewall of the production tubing. The plunger forming material is added to the annulus from the surface, and enough is added so its upper level is above the injection valve. Adding injection gas to the production tubing below the virtual plunger pushes the virtual plunger and column of liquid to surface. The plunger forming material has properties so that the virtual plunger remains cohesive while traveling uphole.

Additionally, the inflow control device comprises at least one inlet passage disposed at the first end and having a contour which provides a desired effect on the inflowing fluid according to the type of fluid, e.g. according to the viscosity of the fluid. The contour may comprise an expanding cross-sectional area, e.g. a cone or other expanding shape. In some embodiments, the entrance of the inlet passage may have a rounded edge to, for example, create an initially decreasing and then increasing cross-sectional area along the inlet passage.

A shifting tool includes radially extending dogs at ends of radially controllable, and circumferentially spaced support arms. Conveyance tubing actuated shifting of an activation mandrel, indexed by a J-Slot, cams the arms radially inward to overcome the biasing for in and out of hole movement, and for releasing the arms for sleeve locating and sleeve profile engagement. A cone, movable with the mandrel engages the dogs for positive locking of the dogs in the profile for sleeve opening and closing. A treatment isolation packer can be actuated with cone engagement. The positive engagement and compact axial components results in short sleeve valves.
