  • Patent number: 6817421
Abstract: A blowout preventer (BOP) protector is adapted to support a tubing string in a wellbore so that the tubing string is directly accessible during a well treatment to stimulate production. The BOP protector includes a mandrel having a sealing assembly mounted to its bottom end for pack-off in a casing of a well to be stimulated. The mandrel is connected at its top end to a fracturing head, including a central passage and radial passages in fluid communication with the central passage. The mandrel is locked in a fixed position by a lockdown nut that prevents upward movement induced by fluid pressures in the wellbore. The advantages are that the BOP protector permits access to the tubing string during well treatment and enables an operator to move the tubing string up and down or run coil tubing into or out of the wellbore without removing the tool. This reduces operation costs, saves time and enables many new procedures that were previously impossible or impractical.

  • Patent number: 6810960
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a method for recovering productivity of an existing well. First, an assembly is inserted into a wellbore, the assembly includes a tubular member for transporting drilling fluid downhole and an under-reamer disposed at the end of the tubular member. Upon insertion of the assembly, an annulus is created between the assembly and the wellbore. Next, the assembly is positioned near a zone of interest and drilling fluid is pumped down the tubular member. The drilling fluid is used to create an underbalanced condition where a hydrostatic pressure in the annulus is below a zone of interest pressure. The under-reamer is activated to enlarge the wellbore diameter and remove a layer of skin for a predetermined length. During the under-reaming operation, the hydrostatic pressure is maintained below the zone of interest pressure, thereby allowing wellbore fluid to migrate up the annulus and out of the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 6799633
Abstract: The present invention provides an improved system and method for performing a desired operation at a remote location in a wellbore. The system is composed of a downhole docking station assembly and a detachable downhole tool assembly. The downhole tool assembly includes electrically operated means to move in the wellbore and an end work device to perform the desired work. The downhole tool can also include an imaging device to provide pictures of the downhole environment and various sensors. Data from the downhole tool is communicated to a surface computer, which controls the operation of the tool and displays pictures of the tool environment. The downhole tool detaches itself from the docking station, travels to the desired location in the wellbore and performs a predefined operation according to programmed instruction. The downhole tool returns and connects to the docking station, where it transfers data relating to the operation and can be recharged for further operation.

  • Patent number: 6739628
Abstract: A frangible hose connector that has a knit line at the intended point of fracture, as opposed to a circumferential groove or notch. The knit line provides a break zone which has a lower tensile strength than that of the parent material, thereby providing that the connector is relatively easy to fracture. The connector also includes finger grips which makes breaking the connector easier. The finger grips provide that the connector is configured to be fractured via a twisting or torsion force, as opposed to a bending force. As such, the connector tends to break in a manner wherein fluid does not fling or spray. The connector is formed of plastic, and the knit line is created during the plastic injection molded process, wherein two mold fronts are “squared-up” and meet in the mold cavity to form the knit line.

  • Patent number: 6732799
Abstract: Apparatus and method for explosive and chemical rehabilitation of existing oil wells' perforations and formation, to stimulate oil production therefrom, comprising a combination of detonating cord with a plurality of hardened steel tubes, disposed at predetermined distances thereabout, effectuating a time sequencing of the detonating cord explosions and burn rate. A high-pressure detonator, surrounded by a protective shield, which absorbs the explosive power of the detonator while preserving its desired release of kinetic energy, is used to ignite the detonating cord. An external plastic tube, adjacent to the detonating cord, is filled with oil well production enhancing chemicals such as acid etchers or paraffin dispersants, wherein upon ignition of the detonating cord, the chemicals are explosively propelled through perforations into the formation thereabout, to stimulate and chemically react therewith. A Sample basket and weight are mounted to the bottom of the apparatus. A 0.

  • Patent number: 6719044
Abstract: Devices and methods for selectively emplacing a wear bushing in a wellhead housing and removing it therefrom. A drill string-mounted running tool is used to selectively engage the wear bushing during emplacement and removal. The wear bushing need not be removed each time the drill string is tripped into or out of the well. In addition, the drill string may continue to be lowered after the wear bushing is landed since the running tools described can easily pass through the bushing.

  • Patent number: 6705396
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing fluid cavitation is provided. For a given channel cross-section of a pressure line, the flow is accelerated so as to reach a speed at which Re>Recr, where Re is the Reynolds number and Recr is the critical Reynolds number; the flow is then interrupted for a time less than half of the phase of the hydraulic shock. The device for cavitation of fluid flow is mounted in the channel of a pressure line and includes a cavitator which has the form of a working body placed in the casing and can move radially inside the line and, to a limited extent, along the axis of the line. The maximum cross-section surface of the working body in a plane perpendicular co the axis of the line is more than 0.8 of the passage of the line but not equal to it.

  • Patent number: 6695048
Abstract: A tubing guide for directing coiled tubing through an injector apparatus and into a well. The tubing guide comprises a frame, which is also referred to as a tubing carrier, extending from a base. The shape of the tubing guide changes depending upon the natural radius of curvature of the tubing. The tubing carrier will conform to provide a path for the coiled tubing that more nearly approximates the residual radius of curvature of the coiled tubing. The carrier has a plurality of segments pivotably connected to one another. The segments can pivot and thus the carrier itself can move from a fully retracted position to a fully rotated position. In the fully rotated position, the carrier can approximate a radius larger than that in the fully closed position. The segments are allowed to pivot or rotate as the tubing is passing therethrough so that the shape of the carrier is continually adjusting so as to provide a more natural path for the coiled tubing.
