  • Patent number: 5284975
Abstract: A method of preparing an .alpha.-d-phenylalkylbenzyl carbinol by the reaction of a phenylbenzyl ketone with an alkali metal enolate of an amide to form an aldol adduct, which is reduced and purified to form an .alpha.-d-phenylalkylbenzyl carbinol, wherein the carbinol so produced possesses analgesic activity. In an embodiment of the invention, a phenylbenzyl ketone is reacted with an alkali metal enolate of an amide to form an aldol adduct, which is reacted with an alkali metal salt of a secondary amine to form a dianion; the dianion is alkylated with an alkyl halide to form an .alpha.-isomer of an aldol adduct, which is reduced and purified to form an .alpha.-d-phenylalkylbenzyl carbinol possessing analgesic activity.

  • Patent number: 5277896
Abstract: The invention relates to compositions and methods of using clay-enclosed paramagnetic ions as image brightening or image contrast agents. In particular, T.sub.1 relaxivity measurements on Hectorite and mortmorillonite clay-enclosed trivalent gadolinium suggest improved imaging over zeolite-enclosed paramagnetic species. Clay-enclosed gadolinium complexes are amenable to convenient administration in oral preparations and are readily formulated in stable aqueous suspensions. Other transition metal ions, including divalent manganese, may be enclosed in the clay structures, either as free metals or in the forms of chelated complexes. Alternatively, improved relaxivities are envisioned for clays incorporating a paramagnetic metal ion as part of the framework structure.

  • Patent number: 5276192
Abstract: A process for preparing phenoxyethanamines from phenols and 2-oxazolines in quantitative yields was discovered. Phosphoric acid hydrolyzes the amide intermediate from the phenol/2-oxazoline reaction without cleaving the amide at the ether linkage and without undesired aromatic ring substitution. Thus, yield to the desired phenoxyethanamines is often 98% or better, requiring no subsequent purification. In contrast, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids give these undesired side reactions. Phenoxyethanamines are useful in thermosetting resins, pharmaceuticals and as surfactants.
