  • Patent number: 4113189
Abstract: A pressurized roller-colloid mill in which the conventional rotor and stator of a colloid mill are preceded by one or more adjustable-thrust roller bearing assemblies disposed in a series relationship. A product to be refined in the form of a slurry is pumped into the feeding port of the mill to pass between the rollers and the inner and outer raceways of one or more roller bearing assemblies, then to the gap between conventional rotor and stator elements of a colloid mill. The multiple rollers and their cooperating raceways constitute working surface areas far in excess of conventional colloid mill rotors and stators. Gang mounting of the rotor of the mill and the inner raceways of the roller bearing assemblies upon a common axially movable shaft permits gap adjustment for the enhancement of milling action. A relief valve at the outlet of the mill cooperates with the adjustable gap to provide an output of product of any desired particle size down to the low micron range.

  • Patent number: 4113185
Abstract: Municipal refuse is treated to produce fuel particularly useful for the operation of a power generating boiler by a process which is characterized by shredding of the as-received material, separation of the light materials prior to pulping of the heavy materials, and ultimate separation from the pulped materials of the inorganic constituents, after which the remaining slurry of predominantly organic materials is dewatered to produce a particulate fuel. The light materials separated after the initial shredding operation are then directly combind with the dewatered organic residue from the pulping operation to effect further reduction in the moisture content of the resultant mixture. The invention is especially applicable to communities where the garbage and trash are collected separately, with the lights produced by shredding and air classifying the trash being added to the fuel product produced by pulping the garbage.

  • Patent number: 4111491
Abstract: The outlet of a magazine for a supply of parallel bristles in a bursh making machine is adjacent to an oscillatable element which transfers compacted tufts of bristles to an inserting tool. The supply of bristles in the magazine is compacted by one or more reciprocable tamping members which compact the bristles during movement toward the outlet. Fresh bristles can be admitted in unconfined condition or in the form of bundles containing batches of parallel bristles confined in tubular envelopes. The envelopes are opened and removed not later than in the magazine and the released bristles are immediately compacted by one of the tamping members which urges the bristles against the other tamping member which continues to compress the remnant of the supply. The other tamping member is withdrawn and moved backwards prior to reintroduction into the magazine above the freshly admitted batch. The tamping members can bypass each other in the magazine.

  • Patent number: 4109872
Abstract: A rotor for a pulper for liquid slurry stock includes a rotor body provided with circumferentially spaced composite vanes, each of which includes a defibering portion and a pumping portion. The defibering portion constitutes the outer end portion of each vane and is of relatively small axial dimensions. The pumping portion constitutes the upper portion of each composite vane and is of substantially greater axial dimensions with its upper surface of convex airfoil shape. The leading face of each pumping portion is essentially plane and inclined forwardly to overhang the trailing edge of the adjacent pumping portion and define therewith a groove in which the stock is channeled for forced centrifugally outward flow. In the preferred embodiment, the rotor cooperates with a frustoconical extraction plate, and the defibering vane portions have their undersurfaces inclined to match the inclination of the extraction plate and are proportioned to extend fully across the extraction plate.

  • Patent number: 4108386
Abstract: A pump for grinding materials contained in a liquid includes a comminutor located at the pump inlet to grind the material as it passes therethrough and into a pumping chamber. The pumping action is created by an impeller which communicates with the pumping chamber but which is located outside thereof to draw the material through the comminutor and into the chamber for radial discharge therefrom. The comminutor includes a stationary annular ring in the inlet having a plurality of grinding teeth which form the internal diameter of the ring. A cutting impeller is rotatable within the ring and has at least one blade which extends from one side of the impeller body axially outwardly beyond the ring to force the material between the teeth of the ring. The other side of the impeller body is provided with means to provide additional shearing of the material and prevent clogging of the material between the teeth of the ring.

  • Patent number: 4108387
Abstract: A hollow pin set in the downstream end of the auger of a conventional food grinder has a downstream end which protrudes to an accessible outside area of the grinder and a downstream - facing shoulder which bears against the upstream side of the knife assembly of said grinder, biasing said knife against a perforated plate. An inside pin or bolt passes through the hollow pin, threadably connected therewith, and has a downstream end which protrudes from the hollow pin and which is adapted to receive a wrench. The upstream end of said inside pin or bolt presses against a compression spring. Applying a wrench to rotate the downstream end of said inside pin or bolt changes the compression of the spring and thereby increases or decreases the bias between said knife assembly and the perforated plate which the knife is biased against.

  • Patent number: RE29746
Abstract: Recovery of paper fiber for reuse for waste paper materials containing plastic sheet and film is facilitated by the combination of a pulper in which the waste paper materials are pulped in a pulper equipped with a junk remover connected with the bottom of the pulper tub by a chute and provided with a pump constructed and arranged to maintain the hydrostatic head in the tub at a higher effective level than in the junk remover tower by circulating liquid from the tower back to the tub. The result is to cause transfer of the plastic and other lightweight trash to the junk remover for removal by its conveyor buckets and to prevent accumulation of lightweight trash in the tub to the extent that it interferes with extraction of the defibered paper slurry.
