  • Patent number: 7768192
Abstract: A lighting device comprising sources of visible light comprising solid state light emitters and/or luminescent materials emitting three or four different hues. A first group of the sources, when illuminated, emit light of two hues which, if combined, would produce illumination having coordinates within an area on a 1931 CIE Chromaticity Diagram defined by points having coordinates: 0.59, 0.24; 0.40, 0.50; 0.24, 0.53; 0.17, 0.25; and 0.30, 0.12. A second group of the sources is of an additional hue. Mixing light from the first and second groups produces illumination within ten MacAdam ellipses of the blackbody locus. Also, a lighting device comprising a white light source having a CRI of 75 or less and at least one solid state light emitters and/or luminescent material. Also, methods of lighting.

  • Patent number: 7762701
Abstract: A rear-loading LED module for a rear combination lamp is disclosed. One or more LEDs are mounted on a printed circuit board that electrically powers and mechanically holds them outside a faceted, parabolic reflector. Light emitted from the LEDs enters a light propagation region, formed between the reflective adjacent faces of two nested cylinders. The cylinders extend from the LEDs, outside the reflector, longitudinally through a hole at the vertex of the reflector, to the focus of the reflector. In some applications, the light propagation region may act as a beam homogenizer, so that light exiting the light propagation region may have roughly uniform intensity. Light from the light propagation region strikes an outwardly-flared reflector that directs it largely transversely onto the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector collimates the light and directs it longitudinally, through a transparent cover and out of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 7762700
Abstract: A rear-loading LED module for a rear combination lamp is disclosed. One or more LEDs are mounted on a printed circuit board that mechanically holds them at the focus of a faceted, parabolic reflector. Light from the LEDs diverges transversely and horizontally, and is collimated by the reflector, and the reflected collimated light is directed in a generally longitudinal direction out of the rear combination lamp, toward the viewer. The LED module itself is generally longitudinally oriented, and is insertable longitudinally into the interior of the reflector from a hole at the vertex of the reflector. The printed circuit board, an optional thermal pad adjacent to the printed circuit board, and a thermally conductive layer adjacent to the optional thermal pad are all generally planar layers, are all generally parallel to each other, and may optionally all have the same footprint. Together, the printed circuit board, the thermal pad and the thermally conductive layer may all form a generally planar ledge.

  • Patent number: 7762704
Abstract: An edge-lit panel features extractor patterns that produce uniform illumination. The effective density of extractor pattern pixels is adjusted to achieve uniform illumination. A method of adjusting the effective pixel density of extractor pattern pixels to achieve uniform illumination entails adjusting areas of darkness of a grayscale image, then producing a binary image by dithering the grayscale image, and applying an extractor pattern corresponding to the binary image to a surface of the panel. The extractor pixels correspond to pixels of the binary image derived from a dithered grayscale image, with the darkness of the grayscale image increasing with distance from the light source. Effective pixel density is increased to compensate for attenuated output in dim areas. By adjusting gray shading darkness of a grayscale image, pixel density can be adjusted to achieve uniform light emission.

  • Patent number: 7758197
Abstract: A backlight assembly includes a container, a plurality of lamps and a lamp-fixing member. The container includes a bottom face and side faces extending therefrom that define a receiving space. The lamps are arranged in parallel with each other in the container. The lamp-fixing member includes a support body installed in the container and arranged in a direction intersecting a lengthwise direction of extension of each of the lamps, a lamp-fixing portion protruding from the support body and covering a respective lamp, and a boss protruding from an inner face of the lamp-fixing portion and extending toward a center of the respective lamp to fix the respective lamp with a corresponding lamp-fixing portion via a point or line contact. Thus, a local decrease in temperature of the lamp covered by the lamp-fixing portion may be prevented to improve image display quality by preventing or eliminating dark spots.

  • Patent number: 7744265
Abstract: A backlight assembly that does not use a bottom chassis is presented. The absence of bottom chassis reduces manufacturing cost, simplifies the assembly process, and facilitates heat dissipation. The backlight assembly includes a lamp, a light guide plate, a mold frame and a securing mold. The lamp unit includes a lamp that generates light and a lamp cover that partially encloses the lamp. The light guide plate receives the light from the lamp unit and guides the light toward the front of the backlight assembly. The mold frame receives the lamp unit and the light guide plate through an open portion. The securing mold is coupled to the lamp unit and combines with the mold frame to secure the first lamp unit. The backlight assembly relies on one mold frame to hold its components together.
