    Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for measuring the desired length of a prosthetic device which is to be implanted in a body cavity of a patient. The apparatus generally includes a helically coiled stent formed of a resiliently-deformable material, a plunger which is connected to the proximal end of the stent, a sheath which slides over the plunger and stent when the plunger and sheath are used to insert and removably deploy the stent into the body cavity, and a scale for measuring an indication of the length of the stent once removably deployed in the body cavity. Proximal movement of the sheath to partially deploy the stent causes a length to be indicated on the scale. According to the method of the invention, the helically coiled stent of the apparatus is placed and partially deployed within the body cavity by use of the plunger and sheath of the apparatus. Once the stent bridges the body cavity, the scale of the apparatus is used to determine the length of the deployed stent.

    Abstract: A blood clot filter comprising: an anchoring portion comprising a generally cylindrical self-expanding body formed from resilient material, the generally cylindrical body having proximal and distal ends and defining an axial direction and having a structure of variable size diameter expandable from a low-profile compressed condition to a larger profile expanded condition, wherein the resilient material urges the generally cylindrical body to radially expand and to thereby apply anchoring radial force against the inner wall surface of the blood vessel; and a generally conical filtering portion axially aligned with the generally cylindrical body having an open proximal end coupled to the distal end of the anchoring portion and having an apical distal end. Also disclosed is a blood clot filter having one or more hooks fixedly coupled to the anchoring portion and formed from compliant material having an original shape that bends under stress yet returns to its original shape when unstressed.

    Abstract: A balloon formed of a single layer of polybutylene terephthalate and polytetramethylene ether glycol terephthalate copolymer in a substantially unblended form. The copolymer has a flexural modulus of greater than about 150,000 psi. The presently preferred copolymer is Hytrel® 8238 by DuPont. The balloon would be substantially unblended, defined as greater than about 60% by weight to about 100% by weight of the copolymer. The balloon is formed in a series of molds. The balloon exhibits high rupture pressure and low compliance coupled with good lesion cross and recross ability.

    Abstract: An ablation burr has a body provided with an inner circumferential rim and an outer circumferential rim that are concentric and spaced longitudinally by a selected distance along the length of the burr. The outer circumferential rim has a generally smooth convex outer surface that reduces damage to a vessel wall or stent. A leading surface of the burr extends between the inner and outer circumferential rims in a substantially uniform, concave manner. An abrasive, for example, diamond grit, is provided on the leading surface. The burr is selectively rotated by a drive shaft, causing the abrasive leading surface of the burr to ablate unwanted deposits. If desired, a wire extends co-axially thorough the body such that a distal end of the wire extends out of the distal end of the burr. An abrasive tip may be coupled to the distal end of the wire, and is selectively rotated, to ablate unwanted deposits.

    Abstract: A radial impacting technique involves using a set of progressively larger radial impactors to pack a medullary canal in a radial direction toward the cortex. For revision cases, graft material, which may be either synthetic or bone graft material, is added into the medullary canal after the previously installed implant has been removed. Packing the medullary canal in the radial direction, as opposed to the conventional approach of packing in a distal direction, provides superior results. The radial impactors are preferably cannulated and may also have holes to assist in the removal of fluids from within the medullary canal. The profile impactors may be either cannulated or non-cannulated and prepare the medullary canal for receipt of the implant.

    Abstract: A device for closing off a septal defect including a polymeric self-hardening material in a specific conformation which is delivered by a catheter means to the area of defect either directly on the cardiac tissue or into a balloon which spans both surfaces of the defect, and hardened in-situ by change in pH or ionic concentration, organic solvents, by permeation of a secondary material capable of precipitation, or by exposure to heat, light or laser energy. In blood, the device may be hardened through photopolymerization or a cooperative effect of coagulation, precipitation or ionization. The device can be made of biodegradable material impregnated with growth factors, mitogenic factors or other determinants which can improve tissue growth such that tissue ingrowth can occur over a period of time. The catheter itself may be an ultrasonic imaging catheter.

    Abstract: A surgical spring clip includes a first molded component having a first jaw and a first finger tab. A second component having a second jaw and a second finger tab comprises the only other molded component. The first component has a telescoping relationship with the second component and is moveable by operation of the finger tab between a first position wherein the jaws are generally closed and a second position wherein the jaws are generally open. A spring disposed between the tabs and the jaws biases the first and second components toward the first position. The clip has a telescoping barrel with the general shape of a polygon in radial cross-section. An increased guidance link provides the clip with a guidance ratio of about 1.5 ratio. Alignment of the components is further enhanced by the provision of ramped projections and the accommodation of tolerances only along one side of the telescoping barrel.

Each retractor arm defines a dimension between the first and second supporting surfaces sufficient to distract the opposed vertebrae upon insertion thereof. The retractor introducer is positionable within the longitudinal passageway of the retractor sleeve. The retractor introducer includes an elongated member defining proximal and distal ends and having a distal introducer head.

    Abstract: A cannula includes a tubular body having a proximal end and distal blunt end, at least one lumen extending the length of the body, an endoscope having a lighted, viewing end disposed in the lumen near the distal end of the body, and a transparent, tissue-separating tip substantially covering the distal end of the body. The tissue-separating tip is slightly blunted to inhibit avulsion of tissue and lateral vessels along the dissected cavity formed thereby. Endoscopic viewing through the tip is enhanced by tapering the inner walls thereof to a cusp adjacent the blunt tip in order to reduce visual distortion. Alternatively, a cannula includes a dissection probe and a removable or deflectable tip for exposing the probe and endoscope to facilitate viewing and the dissection of connective tissue and lateral vessels along the dissected cavity. Methods of using such cannulas produce an elongated cavity along the course of a blood vessel for subsequent harvesting or other treatment of the isolated blood vessel.

    Abstract: An endoscopic clip applier for the temporary as well as permanent occlusion of vessels and the clipping of other tissues. The clip applier includes an elongated outer body having a proximal end attached to an actuating mechanism and a distal end. An elongated inner member is slidably positioned within the outer body and has a proximal end coupled to the actuating mechanism and a distal end coupled to a pair of generally opposing jaws. Movement of the inner member relative to the outer body pivots the jaws open and closed. The jaws are configured for receiving and supporting a malleable surgical clip which is insertable within an internal retention groove within each jaw. Each groove has an undercut portion at its distal end which is configured to mate with an outwardly tapering portion at the distal end of each clip. When forced distally in the grooves, the distal ends of the clip are moved into the undercut portion and the clip retained within the groove.

    Abstract: A bone member fastener for closing a craniotomy includes a cap and a base interconnected by a narrow cylindrical collar. The cap has an externally threaded stud that screws into an internally threaded bore of the collar, thereby allowing the cap and base to be brought into clamping engagement against the internal and external faces of a bone plate and surrounding bone. In a particularly disclosed embodiment, the base of the fastener is placed below a craniotomy hole with the collar projecting into the hole, and the stud of the cap is screwed into the bore of the base from above the hole to clamp a bone flap against the surrounding cranium. This device provides a method of quickly and securely replacing a bone cover into a craniotomy. The distance between the cap and base can be selected by how far the threaded stud of the cap is advanced into the internally threaded collar. The fastener is therefore adaptable for use in several regions of the skull having various thicknesses.
