  • Patent number: 10007506
Abstract: Managing updates to executable programming code on a computer system in a computer network. A maintenance service utility is configured to launch a maintenance procedure at a specified time during operation of the computer system. Operation of a maintenance timer utility is activated during startup of the computer system to track and monitor the amount of time the computer system has been operating since startup. The maintenance service utility determines if there any updates to the executable programming code that require installation. The maintenance procedure is launched after a specified time if there are updates to the executable programming code. The computer system is automatically rebooted to install the updates to the executable programming code. A maintenance service editor utility enables the maintenance service utility to be configured to launch the maintenance procedure after a specified time if there are updates to the executable programming code.

  • Patent number: 9990217
Abstract: A virtual machine manager (VMM) provides an emulated printer to a guest operating system. The virtual machine manager is configured to receive a printer mechanism type, receive an output type, and configure the emulated printer according to the printer type, printer mechanism type, and output type. The VMM, in one embodiment, also provides a virtual communication channel over which a guest operating system may identify and communicate with the emulated printer. The guest operating system installs a printer driver corresponding to the emulated printer, prints an object to the emulated printer via the virtual communication bus, and the VMM creates a print image of the object before communicating the print image with a target destination.

  • Patent number: 9990232
Abstract: A processing device receives a job request to allocate one or more resources in a resource environment to a job. The job is related to an application. The job request specifies the job using a first description language. The processing device extracts one or more tags from the job request. The one or more tags describes handling parameters of the job and features of the application. The one or more tags are in a second description language different from the first description language. The processing device allocates one or more resources in the resource environment to the job in view of the one or more tags.

  • Patent number: 9971664
Abstract: Assessing the need for disaster recovery (DR) protection for a virtual application may include accessing resource consumption history for constituent VMs that support the virtual application. The resource consumption history may include usage metrics corresponding to resources used by each VM. A change in a cost of downtime of the given virtual application may be produced and used to assess criteria or rules. The given virtual application may be designated for DR protection based on an assessment of the criteria. DR protection may be activated for the designated virtual applications. The DR protection may automatically expire after a period of time.

  • Patent number: 9946555
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to systems, methods and computer program products for creating and managing a virtual operating environment on a physical machine connected to a distributed network, the virtual operating environment is virtualized by the physical machine. The invention may categorize the virtual operating environment using a tiered data structure, where each tier of the tiered data structure defines an attribute for categorizing the virtual operating environment. The invention generates a graphical representation of the tiered data structure for display via a user computing device that enables a user to communicate requests for causing the virtual operating environment to perform a function and communicates commands to the physical machine based on receiving such requests. The invention may additionally update the graphical representation after the virtual operating environment has executed the function.

  • Patent number: 9928108
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for generating and executing metaevents within an on-demand code execution environment. The code execution environment can include virtual machine instances that are pre-initialized to enable low latency execution of arbitrary user-defined code. Code execution can typically occur in response to a defined event trigger, such as a call to an application programming interface (API) from an external source. Code execution may also occur in response to metadata regarding the operation of the code execution environment. A user may specify criteria for “metaevents” based on the metadata, and also specify code to be executed in response to satisfaction of the criteria. When the code execution environment determines that the user's criteria is satisfied, a metaevent may be generated that causes execution of the set of code. This execution may, in turn, generate metadata that triggers one or more metaevents.

  • Patent number: 9921870
Abstract: A system and method for supporting a scalable thread pool in a multi-threaded processing environments such as a distributed data grid. A work distribution system utilizes a collection of association piles to hold elements communicated between a service thread and multiple worker threads. Worker threads associated with the association piles poll elements in parallel. Polled elements are not released until returned from the worker thread. First in first out ordering of operations is maintained with respect to related elements by ensuring related elements are held in the same association pile and preventing polling of related elements until any previously polled and related elements have been released. By partitioning the elements across multiple association piles while ensuring proper ordering of operations with respect to related elements the scalable thread pool enables the use of large thread pools with reduced contention compared to a conventional single producer multiple consumer queue.

  • Patent number: 9916173
Abstract: A hypervisor of a host receives an indication of an exit from a guest to the hypervisor and a memory-mapped input output (MMIO) address that caused the exit to hypervisor. The hypervisor walks a page table of the guest to identify a guest address associated with the MMIO address that caused the exit to the hypervisor. The hypervisor decodes an instruction of the guest referenced by the guest address to determine a type of operation that the guest intended to execute and a location of MMIO information. The hypervisor records, in a page table entry for the MMIO address of a host page table, an association with the type of operation and the location of the MMIO information. The hypervisor executes the operation on behalf of the guest based on the type of the operation and the MMIO information.

  • Patent number: 9870248
Abstract: A hypervisor identifies a set of pages associated with a guest operating system (OS) of a virtual machine (VM) that are shared with an application. The hypervisor maps each of the set of pages associated with the guest OS to a corresponding page associated with the application. The hypervisor modifies a write protection attribute for each corresponding page associated with the application to cause a protection page fault upon an application attempt to update the corresponding page. The hypervisor detects updated pages by detecting the protection page fault upon the application attempt to update one of the corresponding pages associated with the application. The hypervisor then logs a modification of each updated corresponding page.
